Qantas Is Cracking down on Resale of Lounge Passes

I had an ad on Gumtree for some Lounge Passes and Qantas used my mobile number to discover my QFF account details and then send me a warning email.

The email explains that according to the Frequent Flyer T&C offering passes for sale constitutes as abuse or misuse of benefits and could result in suspension or termination of the QFF Membership.

  • Good.

Always thought it was stupid to be able to sell those visitor passes like that. The sale prices being around $50 was equally insane that people would pay that amount for 1 visit to the Qantas club - totally blows my mind why somebody would pay that sort of coin for a single pass.

If I had a stopover in Singapore for a few hours+, I'd happily pay $50 for lounge access. Put for local airports I wouldn't bother.

      • Fair enough. I can't say I agree in terms of value for money, but there you go.

Sorry why is it "Good" and why was it "stupid"…? Someone doesn't want them, and another someone does want them

Because it wasn't the intention of the passes to begin with, and as a result of the on-selling, Qantas would no doubt be weighing up if they discontinue them entirely, ruining it for everyone who used them without trying to profit.

If you win a Ferrari F12 in a lucky draw, and you can't afford the maintenance, what are you going to do? Do you feel bad selling it and keep the money?

        • +6

Given Qantas are now selling lounge access to economy passengers before their flights (going rate seems to be $70 a pop), I can see why they're cracking down. Don't know why any members of the public feel like getting on their high horse about it.

I managed to get rid of mine on ebay recently luckily - it won't let you list them if you call them "lounge passes" but you can just call them "passes"

I won't be trying to sell any more

    Damn you Qankas!

I always wanted to try the lounge and now my dreams have been dashed!

Can anyone answer… is the food inside the lounge free? I mean meals and such?

    • usually snacks and crackers, fruits and drinks are free.
maybe simple hot meal but dont expect restaurant quality

      • What about the 1st class lounge? I think Neil Perry works there…

It would be awesome if so!

        • +5

Neil Perry does not work the 1st Lounges.
Rather he puts together menus for Qantas and at times caters big events.

The food is still some what limited in Domestic 1st lounges.

        • +2

First class lounge is the frigging best

Top quality drinks, amazing food, excellent ambience. Id pay to go there if it were a restaurant!

From my experiences in Australian airports.

Qantas Club Lounge: Small continental style buffet with postmix drink machine.
Qantas Business Class Lounge: Extensive buffet facilities and bar service.
Qantas First Class Lounge: Extensive buffet facilities with a free a la carte dining, bar and wine service.

There is nothing stoping you from still doing so.
Lounges vary from Airport to Airport.
Generally there is a range of limited food options which vary with the time of day.
They have scaled back the food a bit since Qantas had that cost cutting shake up when they were posting loses.
The bar is free and includes Spirits, Beer, Wine & Soft Drinks.

To sum my thoughts up on Lounge Access.
Its great to call in, grab some thing to eat & drink, charge your phone, use a clean bathroom and if you have been travelling for a while have a nice hot shower.
Essentially its a comfortable space compared to sitting at a gate.

Food is free, just don't expect a lot of it.

I was in the Brisbane Qantas Club lounge last week, they had a self service sandwich/salad buffet (with a sandwich press), and a basic chicken curry/rice dish for dinner. Lollies and biscuits scattered around near the coffee machines. That's about it.

      • Brisbane Domestic is one of the better lounges I have visited in recent years.
Sydney T3 is a s#it show, Adelaide is a combined lounge and quiet sizeable with good facilities.
Spent way to much time in regional lounges where the bar is a self serve fridge with the same stuff they serve on the plane minus the mini spirit bottles.

  • nothing special about the qantas lounge anyway….

decent shower access is worth the price on it's own. The Food/drinks are icing on the cake.

  • so i might not be able to sell my 2 passes now

Use a temp mobile number for gumtree and the like.

    • +4

You don't need to publish your mobile number Gumtree ads.

@meku was your number published in the ad, or would Qantas have needed to ask it off Gumtree? While I know Gumtree will from time-to-time remove such ads (and can even penalise users for doing so), I don't know if handing over an unpublished phone number would be legal….

Sell them in the Ozbargain classifieds

  • If Qantas was serious about this, then they would have the person's name on the lounge passes. The same as Emirates used to do with their Citibank card (could use for self twice, or once for self+guest).

  • They are going digital so when the last of the Paper passes expire that will be all she wrote.

    http://www.msn.com/en-au/money/personalfinance/qantas-has-sm…

    • It looks like they are making it easier!
Will be able to "allocate a pass to a family member or friend."
New friendships available 'for sale' hehe!
