I need a 'cheapish' tablet for my son who is in hospital - and will be for some time. Something like the XiaoMi Mi Pad 2 16GB ROM. I don't want an Apple (price and lack of flexibility).
Main use would be watching videos (Netflix etc etc :) ) and accessing the internet through WiFi.
If you have any recommendations I would prefer that you have actually used that item - not just read about it.

If you want really cheap then the $100'ish Lenovo 7" tablet from JB hi-fi may be adequate. I briefly used one a friend had and I was expecting it to be very sluggish but it wasn't. I didn't do heavy web browsing (multi tabs/4k video/etc), but for simple tasks like watching Netflix it seemed fine.
One thing to check, I'm not sure if it has external microsd card slot, and internal storage was not a lot (from memory).
One other advantage:
If your son is in hospital now, waiting for delivery from China, for something like the Xiaomi, would take some time, pickup locally is quick! and… if there is some problem with a tablet delivered from China your son will be waiting a looong time.

I have a MiPad 2, I found the Windows version a bit tedious to use so I flashed it to Android , loving it.
However, please note that the Mi Pad's dont have an external SD support, so if you are looking to put movies, music etc in there, i would recommend the 64GB version.
