How to properly repair brown patches on lawn?

Hi all, got some brown and dry patch on my sir Walter lawn in WA. Got told by a bunning staff to buy hortico top dressing lawn mix and Bailey 3.1.1. I was told to spread the lawn mix first then the Bailey 3.1.1 on top? Is this right? Do I really need both? Not overkill?

If not, How would you do it properly? Thanks

Bunnings staff, wouldn't trust them for anything.

  • Dig up another patch of green lawn and top it over. Linda like a comb-over

    • uh…no thanks..why would I do that to mess up my lawn even more

Linda like medallions, and a hairy chest too?

  • just use this .. Bailey 3.1.1.

    and lots of water ..

    • I thought so too, but he said Bailey 3.1.1 just fertiliser, doesn't give the soil for the healthy lawn to grow over, if you know what I meant. Btw that Bailey 3.1.1 ain't so cheap too..I always found that "over feed" any plant will lead to its death faster than not doing anything …learnt that with my lemon tree..

      • maybe just yellow sand then..

        • heard of that, but yellow sand virtually contains no nutrient no?

First this is to identify the problem.
Is it not enough water, hydrophobic soil, soil nutrition issue, pests?
Solve that and you've fixed your problem.
Here in WA for me its generally about checking the sprinklers. Then maybe a dose of soil wetter and Seasol Plus. It'll green up when its treated right.

    • Amateur house owner..try hand water the spot a lot, still doesn't help. My guess is the root die, or lawn bug? Can't see any bug though..

      • Mix dish washing liquid and water into a bucket and pour over brown patches/edges of green. Wait a few minutes, and this will bring out the lawn beetles.

You may need a couple of buckets depending on the area (or use dish washing liquid against an object and spray with high pressure hose, this'll spread it easier than getting several buckets if it's a large area).

        • dishwashing liquid not gonna kill the lawn? 0.o

        • @Droid11: Apparently it's actually good for it. Though, don't use anti-bacterial dishwashing liquid.

        • @rompastompa: LOL ..no shit..anyway I don't believe it's bug anyway, just some spots not covered fully by the sprinklers due to the shape of my front lawn.

  • Hortico top dressing works wonders on Sir Walter Buffalo

    • You know it how?

I top dress my Sir Walter lawn once a year during growing season.
It keeps it healthy all year round.
When I used to never top dress it, it stressed and browned during environmental / seasonal changes.
The blend is quite unique compared to other brands of top soil - it seems to suit the properties of Sir Walter Buffalo really well.

        • I always understood top dressing was only necessary to fill in uneven areas in the lawn. If you want to add nutrients to feed your lawn you are better off with a slow release fertiliser and deep infrequent watering cycle. The deep infrequent watering cycle will allow the roots to go deeper into the soil and prevent dehydrating on those really hot days which I suspect might have happened in your case.

        • @Cabrinha:
if you wanted to just fill uneven surfaces you could use any cheap soil or sand.
hortico top dressing is more like an all in one leveller, fertiliser and water retention solution.

Have you got a dog? The urine can cause the grass to go brown!!If you have a dry patch try digging down about 6 inches to see if the water is getting down to the roots.Sir Walter is a self repairing grass give it plenty of water. You could dig the dead patches out and replace with new grass!!
Give it some seasol for grass coolabah turf supply bunnings with sir walter here in Vic you could try giving them a ring but without really seeing it its hard to say what is wrong with it?

    • No, no dog..

    • my first thought too.. bring out the dog rocks!

  • I would treat it for lawn grub and apply a granular lawn fertiliser. Then apply 10mm of water. Follow up with a light watering every 3 days in the evening to minimise evaporation. It should come back soon.

  • Water every couple of days

  • If you have a few patches of browning. You can buy a roll of turf and cut it to match the brown area size. Dig out the brown patch and place the replacement turf over top. In a couple of weeks it'll be fixed.

My guess is the brown area is "thatching" of the buffalo. Once it thatches the turf is dead and needs new runners to fix it. Did you avoid mowing lawn for weeks/months?

This video from better homes shows how it's done. Worked well for me.
