Making Money from Travelling

Hi All,

I remember many years ago, we used to be able to bring 1 carton of cigarettes back to Australia and we used to go to the dodgy stores and sell it to them for cheaper than the cost it was sold to them. Now I believe the rule is only 2 packs of cigarette's.. so that's no longer possible.

I will be traveling back and forth to Singapore (at least once a month) And was wondering if anyone has something they do every time they travel to get some extra cash or spending money.

Please let me know what you think!!

NOTHING ILLEGAL

Have you considered smuggling some kind of drug up your bottom?

ObJoke: Teacher: Hey you in the back, are you chewing gum? Student: No sir, I am Tan Boon Kiat.

@eyeballz2770: Cigar for you! This was an old joke my niece showed me in the early days of the Internet when access was infrequent and she actually went to the trouble of printing and pasting the joke in a scrap book. Nowadays it would spread in seconds in a tweet.

      • I just read that with a Singaporean accent…

        friggin hilarious

We dont sell, but my parents travel frequently to Asia and always gets requests to buy supplements (mainly Fish Oil, glucosamine) from Australia because of the quality. Also the tim-tams and cadbury chocolate/biscuits also taste different in Asia so would buy a bunch.

miss those cigarette days though >_> 50 sticks is ridiculous, especially when they dont even sell the brand I want in Australia.

    • China is very keen on Australian milk powders and vitamins. Even if the products are available locally in China, some consumers would rather buy a direct import as they don't trust local stock due to counterfeiting.

I remember a Chinese relative going to China in 2010 with a suitcase full of Coles brand milk powder. That was worth plenty of money after the melamine scandal.

Singapore is going to be a tougher market as it generally doesn't have the counterfeiting and faking problem that China has.

  • Probably the only products you can make a decent amount of money on are for personal use, like cigarettes (max 75 smokes allowed, one pack open) or alcohol (whisky, etc). You may find some consumer items that are cheaper overseas than here, like certain foods, cosmetics, etc. I got genuine Sensodyne enamel rebuilding toothpaste in Ukraine for $2.50 a tube, where the cheapest price I have ever seen here is $5.

If there was a large difference in a sought after item between Singapore and Australia the market would fill the need.

    • Unfortunately, I won't be in transit.. but that is a good one too. My friend was there recently and didn't qualify because she didn't have a return ticket yet..

freight something in your luggage - act as a courier.
could even be something more fragile in hand luggage.
not sure how you could find someone willing to pay, but gumtree could be worth a shot.

      What could go wrong?

      • When we were working in the US we sent home a box of Legos with a friend of ours, to save postage. What we forgot to tell him is we had packed a Star Wars top in the box as well. When you spun it it would display a star wars message and play the tune. He gets to the airport they Xray the Lego box and this thing with batteries and wires shows up on the display. They ask him what it is and he has no clue. Pre 911 so he didn't end up at Guantanamo Bay, but you do have to be careful.

      • Worst comes to worst he'll get life and probably out already after serving 20.

    • Too risky. What if someone gives you drugs packaged as a children toys etc?

        Or worse, a body board.

  • Well if you were going to Malaysia I would say please buy me Ponstan (it's a period medication).

It's less than a dollar over the counter, or it was 5 years ago and it's at least $8-$10 here

Might be something to think about

  • Rum and sell to friends and family i bring back smoke all the time from asia i just spread them all over my case i never had a problem.
