Melb Flights are next week too, I always assumed last minute flights were 2-3 times standard even if the plane flys empty

Booking early is just BS. Booked a flight to Europe last year, 3 weeks before departure, Emirates, ~1250. Paid 1800 in the past booking 3 months in advance on Etihad (which is typically cheaper, and a longer flight).
Booking in advance is only worthwhile for large groups, because people may need to travel in a whole party.
Last minute rip offs, I've found, are mostly on domestic flights or really tight airlines.
But there's always that one family member or friend who nags the shit out of you to book really early…
