  • Potentially more savings if we can combine some sort of cash back deal?

    • Not with Dell (Alienware) via JB Hi-Fi I don't believe, other than pre-purchased vouchers. Happy to be proven wrong :)

  • +1

Not sure where you copied the specs from, but the JB HiFi version appears to be using the 60Hz IPS panel, not the 120Hz TN G-Sync panel.

In summary, the differences are no G-Sync, only 60Hz, less brightness (300 nits vs 400 nits), but IPS + Optimus. IMO, the 120Hz panel is the superior one; it's not IPS, but despite being TN it has extremely good viewing angles and colours, and the brightness, refresh rate and G-Sync are all well worth it. Not sure if there's a way to choose at JB HiFi when you purchase it?

Edit: Ah, I see, the listed specs were from the coupon. As above though, the linked version has the 60Hz panel. They don't seem to list one with the 120Hz panel.

    • The specs are copied from the supplied coupon

    • Actually, something isn't right about this listing; they're claiming it's a 60Hz IPS panel, yet that it supports G-Sync. With the Alienware models you either get the 120Hz TN panel with G-Sync, or you don't get G-Sync. Might want to verify with them as to what you're actually getting…

      • I bought this from JB recently (for $2400) and it's definitely 60hz IPS GSync. Not 120.

        • Yeah, someone else from Whirlpool confirmed that as well, and it's very strange as they don't offer a 60Hz G-Sync option on their website. Must be something JB organised with Dell themselves.

        • @CarbonTwelve: I was most confused and whilst I was initially annoyed since I wanted Optimus and a slightly better battery life (JB Hifi spec is the 66whr battery), the reality is it sits at home most of the time so Gsync isn't so bad after all.

  • Seems like a good deal if it is 120 hz

  • Skylake?

  • Metabox $40 cheaper and a 512gb m.2 ssd all else is the same

fk Alienware basicly razer at this point overpriced crap.

  • just be aware of the issues with these models…most obvious being high cpu temps (which can be fixed - repaste and undervolt etc).

    • Based on reviews it seems kaby lake is a fair amount cooler than its skylake predecessor. I am about to pull the trigger myself. Does anyone know whether we can haggle in store and then still use the coupon?

      • i doubt they'll discount it any more.

      • Kaby Lake itself isn't any cooler. However the Kaby Lake versions of the Alienware laptops are cooler than the initial Skylake batch because there were problems with the heatsink. Unfortunately, these issues aren't perfectly fixed; I have a Skylake version, but after the fix was implemented, and whilst it was fantastic when I first got it (early Jan), over time the heat has started to creep up and it's definitely not what I'd call good now. Even with the undervolt, the temps can reach above 80C when gaming. There's no throttling, but even still it's higher than I'd like.

Worse still is that Dell Australia won't acknowledge that it's a problem; even if the CPU goes into the 90s, they claim that the CPU can handle up to 100C, and as long as it doesn't throttle below the base clock speed then there's nothing wrong with it, according to them.

Having said that, most other Pascal laptops are reaching 80C even on a good day, so I wouldn't consider the Alienware laptops particularly bad compared to the competition.
