Blockbuster Closing down sale (VIC)

60

Hi guys,

Blockbuster Camberwell is closing down 24th August. Should be able to pick up a few bargains. They had some ex-hire blu-ray dvds movies for $15 and some tv series for $15. Apparently extra stock from other stores will hit there this week. There isn't any catalogue, probably just best to rock up if your in the area.

think thats abit steep, considering thev been thrushed and will be full of scratches

Thrush and Scratches should not be in the same sentence.

      • now thats funny!

  • Same as Video Ezy in Narellan NSW, they're closing with all weekly ex rentals @ $5 and pretty much the same as above.

This has to be the beginning of the end for the Video Rental Franchise.

  • Oh what a shame. I think online borrowing replaced them. Its a shame to see big businesses going down. I was sad to see clive peeters go.

If the broadband does get faster and better value, there'll be even less and less people going to video rental shops unfortunately.

Yeah well considering you can get a oovie vending machine dvd for $3 compared to $8 at a video shop they are a complete rip off.

    • or free on wednesday

  • Even better - Rent from Bigpond. $24 Unlimited movies a month !!!
    http://dvd.bigpondmovies.com/plans?a=11101&ref=Net-Head-Movi…

    • That's quite expensive if you only watch one or two movies a month…

      • I used to watch abt 4 movies a week back in uni days, so was the best deal for me..

I think it's the beginning of the end as well. Like photo developing, technology has just caught up and the industry generally isn't flexible enough to keep up.

I stopped renting because most of my local video stores stopping having any decent rental deals, they would charge full price for overdues, and they kept raising prices. Back when movie rentals were in their heyday, you'd never have any of these issues, so why pull this now, when the end is nigh?

Unless they're squeezing the last of the golden eggs out of the goose…..

    • There lots of geese out there that don't seem to mind/know they are being squeezed for $$ - They are less likey to be Ozbargain members/readers ;-)

  • Yes, and some of those shop assistants/attendants are soooo rude!. There is a lady at my local shop (Caroline Springs Shopping Centre(Victoria)), that is so rude. I avoid the place like it had the plague! Keep customers happy with good prices and service and they'll remain. I see cinemas half empty all the time also, with overpriced entry and overpriced snacks!… how do they survive?!

    • Maybe you are rude to her, and she is just being rude back ?

    • Cinemas continue to survive due to dates (and now 3D movies) ;-)

      • I think we'll find that even 3D movies won't save cinemas, as 3D TVs are going to be the real beneficiaries (give it another 3 years for saturation).

I think that cinemas are enjoying their mini-rise in interest, born from the 3D, sure, but I think the gimmick will wear off sooner rather than later.

I'm an optometrist in Victoria, and I have seen many people have excessive headaches, dizziness and sore eyes from 3D movies.

PS - I HAVE seen 3D movies and love them!

i worked in a blockbuster in mid-west america when i was a teenager.. we'd pull $7.5kUSD on a friday night if it looked like it might rain… four registers open and people queing all the way through the store.. it was pretty ridiculous.. 450 copies of titanic.

but now blockbusters days are numbered.

  • Maybe you are just an idiot jv, i quote your comment to dealayed's coment- "That’s quite expensive if you only watch one or two movies a month…" WHY? would anyone pay $24.00 a month for unlimited rentals, IF they were only going to watch one or two movies… DUH!. That was just a silly comment. I am sure many people out there have been recipients of rudeness without being rude themselves… maybe.

What if I hired a lot of movies for $3 a go and tried to return them on the day after they closed?

    • +2

you would have to use the "after hours" chute :-)

lol but I dont think they are hiring out anymore.

  • went in today, they have a huge range, new releases for 16.95, weeklies for $5, games were $30 for weeklies and other games were a complete rip off. If you were a complete tight arse you would have a heart attack because these prices arnt that great, if you want great prices wait till like 3 days before they close.

Its a shame they are closing down, but no one hires anymore from blockbuster, they were always lagging the competition, there prices were like $7-8 for a new release when video ezy had new releases on tuesday for $1.95.

TBH i am not surprised, but i feel sorry for them greatly.

    • Yeah feel bad as well. Both stores around my area closed down in the past month, one of them had been there since I was a little kid. But their prices were always just too high, it was bound to happen.
