Can I Exchange or Trade E-Books Legally? Lonely Planet in particular

Hello all,

I have tons of ebooks especially travel books (lonely planet - latest version of most asian countries) which i bought legally on websites.

I have finish using them and I am wondering if i can trade or exchange it with anyone.

I take it, it is similiar to a physical book where I can give my copy to someone in exchange for another copy. Having said that I will delete and not use my copy.

Any thoughts on this? I want to exchange some lonely planet guide for middleeast and european south america countries.

  • "Any thoughts on this?"

If you have legally paid for them then they are your personal property to do with whatever you wish. I'm sure there's a probably a 'rule' out there somewhere written by a corporation to rip you off but whether you choose to obey is a matter of personal choice. Morally it is OK to sell or trade your own property.

  • My understanding with these type of files is that you are entitled to sell or give away provided you remove the file from your own system.

Legally? You probably can't sell them. Like downloaded movies, music, or software, what you've actually bought is a licence (not for example, a disk) and so the terms of that licence almost certainly stop you from reselling.

In addition, most purchased eBooks come with DRM or are only viewable through a certain app or website. Not to say that you can't get around this (Adobe ePub DRM is easy, iBooks impossible) but just that it might require some extra work.

Is it "ethical" regardless? Eh, yeah, if you delete the book I don't see any problem with it.

    • I don't really see a problem with copying it. It's not as though anyone loses anything.

      • lol are you stupid?

why don't you just copy all your movies and music to give to your friends

"it's not as though anyone loses anything."

        • Give to "your friend" . So you want all of what I have?

  • As well as terms of service saying you can't do this most book stores put DRM on their books to stop you doing it.

  • Lonely planet books has no DRM. In that case can someone contact me to do a trade?
