Admittedly this isn't a deal for everyone, but if you're a tech lover and got some cash you're looking to blow, it might interest you. Been keeping an eye out on Navdy, a GPS Navigation System with Heads Up Display, lately and was bummed when I saw the price was set at $799US + shipping. Just checked Amazon today and noticed a significant price drop of $300 so it's $499 + shipping. Seems to have pretty good reviews on Amazon as well. Cheaper than even the official Navdy store (their shipping is more expensive at $59.99 vs Amazon's $34.48). Amazon has great customer service and returns if something goes wrong anyway.

Surely there are better ways to waste $700?

Almost paid US$799 two months ago,I fell blessed.

    • Invest it in a house! and when that house is paid off, invest the profits it in another house!
I'm sure that is a sustainable model for an economy!

Would be interesting how it lasts under Aussie conditions, suns more intense and a drier heat in some places. just thinking bout it sitting in the sun all day, you wouldn't do that here with most tech.

Sheesh don't you think they took into account hot and cold conditions when they designed it? What is so special about temperatures in Australia that makes them different from parts of the USA?

      • +1

umm no not really, just look at other tech, with the new 5G they made sure this time that the tested things here as conditions are different here. EG http://www.smh.com.au/business/telstra-pushes-for-5g-that-wo…

I live in the US for about 4 years and I can tell you the sun is less intense there, doesn't feel as hot on the skin as it does here.

        • what a load of crap. You ever been to ARizona, Las Vegas in the desert? or New York/Boston when it's more humid than thailand?

Snow ain't a desirable condition over there vs our showers and a storm 3 times a year a either.

        • +1

@murphy84: Actually yes. Central East coast US Summer 100°F Close to 100% humidity, heat index 115°F, it sucks. And you think they's test it in any of those places? good luck with that, most companies unless global would just test it around where it made. It like saying all software is released bug free…

        • @Trantor:

Right, it's incredibly popular in the USA but must be only in the location it's built.

Because the US market isn't literally the toughest post sale satisfaction market ever…

US companies don't make quality tech products, and they make a lot of bad ones that are hugely successful.

        • @murphy84: lolol i'm not dissing it, just curious how it would stand up, i'd love one, but at that price i'd want it to last and not fail in 12 months.

        • @Trantor:

All good, just wasn't agreeing with the testing conditions. It's probably been put through the absolute ringer and back to come out as a winner in the US market is all I'm saying.
Didn't mean to be too much of a prick with the sarcasm, apologies.

        • @Trantor:

They test it, its just when the prototype goes to the factory it gets munzted

What on earth does 5G have to do with a consumer device? This is talking about the distances as Telstra want to allow for longer distances between base stations.

I live in the US for about 4 years and I can tell you the sun is less intense there, doesn't feel as hot on the skin as it does here.

That means a lot, let's compare your experience in Alaska with your experience in the NT.

They have sold these all over the USA with no problems, they sell them to the middle east (but wait your experience there is that it's colder) and not a single complaint.

Have you noticed that car dash mats are no longer popular, is this perhaps because plastic manufacturing is at a level where cracking is no longer an issue?

        • +1

@Maverick-au: read reviews mate. People complain that the device did not stay stuck to the dash. Others said it stores working after leaving it in direct sunlight for a day. The consumer reviews say a lot. I was about to jump on this a while ago but read a lot of reviews and watched the YouTube reviews. It's crap

      • +3

        actually it overheats a lot

If you park your car and it is exposed it has overheat warnings even in mid 20's

That said…it has never actually turned off due overheating.

I have had several warnings where on start up it says 'Navdy is overheating and will shut down. Please open window or turn on airconditioning'

As per comments here, it's prob not best to leave it in sun or to put a cover on it.

I'm gonna disconnect it and put it out of the way in future. Not just for overheating but I noticed how shiny and flash it looks.

          Definite theft potential!!!

So what? Every device has similar warnings but this has nothing to do with your claim. I have dashcams in cars sitting in the sun all day and never have a problem and they're operating.

        • @slipperypete:

That said…it has never actually turned off due overheating.

Probably because it's designed to use in a car.

I have had several warnings where on start up it says 'Navdy is overheating and will shut down. Please open window or turn on airconditioning'

Some people have had problems with the unit staying powered up when their car is switched off, the displays goes dark so unless the cooling fan is running when you park the car you wouldn't notice. There were some threads on reddit about this issues, seemed to be mainly with Mazda's.

As per comments here, it's prob not best to leave it in sun or to put a cover on it.

That is probably a good idea if you're leaving the car in full sun all day but it doesn't change that the unit will handle the temperatures in Australia without self destructing as been claimed here.

        • +1

          @Maverick-au:

I parked my car for 5 minutes and had this warning. The heat is similar to driving so parking wouldn't actually make a huge difference. When I switched off the ignition the fan was running…maybe as you said, it may be to cool the unit before powering off.

The warnings I have had were always on start up.

That is probably a good idea if you're leaving the car in full sun all day but it doesn't change that the unit will handle the temperatures in Australia without self destructing as been claimed here.

I don't think anyone has said that? People just asking questions.

        • @slipperypete:

I wonder if you covered all the non-sensor bits with aluminium foil whether that would keep it from overheating…

    • I'm not too sure if it has a battery in it or not, if so what type of battery. LiPo battery tend to fair better under heated conditions. I have a cellink b with LiPo cells that runs most hours of a day to power my dash cam and it's never skipped a beat since I purchased it last year in April.

Atm I'm using an A8 HUD powered by the OBDII port and it's been fine throughout the Aussie summer.

      • cool :) it just looked like this was more fixed to the dash, I'd never leave a GPS in the sun inside a car.

      • I just looked at the website, its fairly easy to remove and yeah, best not left in the sun

        • +1

It is easy to remove. It's well made and attaches and detaches really nicely

  • This does require it's own SIM card for GPS and bluetooth for message and music…..

I saw this in a tech mag…..is it not the same as mobile on dash with Sygic HUD?

    Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNQipgx3JnQ

^Ok it's $10 and works best at night

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sygic.aura…

    • No it doesn't require its own sim card. It has maps and gps built in and uses a Bluetooth connection to your phone.

It is very different to sticking your phone on the dash and seeing its reflection on a piece of plastic or glass.

I have one and love it. I've just come across a second connection issue which going by the first different one support will provide a solution to quickly.

      • Must been the Roav that has the 4G sim in it!

        https://www.goroav.com/faq

Does it leave a mark on the dashboard when removing and placing in another car?
It uses the OBDII aswell right?

        • I just found the Tech mag "PC Magazine" March edition…..it has it for $799US and gives it the editors Tick award(Performance is negative comments though)
Own maps(offline) and all data is connected via bluetooth to smartphone.

On here in 2014 pre order is was $330US!

The verge gave it a review this week.
    Verdict: Do not buy
    http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/2/14789792/navdy-hud-navigati…

    • I think the reviewer must be pretty short or not have it fitted correctly. It doesn't get in the way at all for me.

The only time I notice things being a bit slow is when scrolling through music. Apart from that it is Ok

Gesture controls aren't much use. I think they thought they would have more gestures and by the time they realised it wasn't so great, it was part of the design

Should have canned that part and had voice control…however, it links via a push button to Siri. I have had zero luck using it though.

just for info from an owner. The unit is fantastic. Waited 2 years as a backer but they did it pretty good so appreciated the wait ans having it sorted (apart from overheating warnings)

Mine was $329. Already covered it as it really helps keep speed under control and a couple of times would have got a ticket due to speed limit changes.

Lots of customisation. Never even look at my car instrument dash anymore

    • +1

      Thanks for the review :)

  • Have one of these. Works pretty well but not worth $700+
One of the best Smart HUD. I backed it USD 300 with a lot stronger AUD, ok for that much I guess.

Probably worth waiting for the Anker Roav, it's on pre-order and is due in a few months. Half the price and triple the features. Biggest drawback is it doesn't use Google maps via your phone.

    https://www.goroav.com/

    • Looks interesting. Would you have to pay for the 4G use?

      • Looks interesting. Would you have to pay for the 4G use?

In the USA the first three months are free and after that a small charge.

They don't say if it will work in Australia but you can easily tether the WiFi version to a WiFi dongle and save USD $100.

        • kind of easier to use your phone…if you have the data

    • What are triple the features?

      • What are triple the features?

Dashcam (front and rear) - extra cost
        Forward cam - extra cost
        Reverse cam - extra cost
        32GB storage
        Android OS
        Application support
Driver assistance like lane control etc
        4G support
        Type C USB
        Multiple microphones
        Multiple speakers
        Etc

        • multiple microphones are def a bonus

    • Not sure I need anything better than Navdy http://au.pcmag.com/navdy-head-up-display/46251/review/navdy

FYI, it includes offline Here maps and also online data if connected to phone

  • Seeing that an aftermarket GPS head unit for your car sets you back over $700, this is not a bad price. Doesnt have the sound features of a unit such as Alpine ILX-700E but offer other features that make up for it.

  • Omg. The amount of fake reviews on Amazon is just unreal. They all read like really bad infomercials. And when I clicked on "comments from verified buyers" there was only 1 comment. Not convinced that this thing it worth anywhere near what it's listed for. Plenty of other HUD options out there for much less that have most of the same features.
