TiVo Service closing down

Most of the functionality that makes the TiVo convenient to use will stop working from 31/10/17.

As a consolation, there is a TiVo Swap Out Offer: https://myaccount.mytivo.com.au/tivoswapout
However, this offer is only open to TiVo devices which have connected to the TiVo Service in the 6 months prior to 1/3/17 (and presumably, also registered at mytivo.com.au), so I'd advise you not to rush out and buy a cheap secondhand TiVo unless the owner has registered it and is willing to change their details to yours at https://myaccount.mytivo.com.au/myaccount/details).

  • I took advantage of the TiVo swap-out offer as soon as I received the email as the email stated it could take up to a few months for stock…

I received an email that my TiVo was ready for pickup within an hour and so went in and HN had 15, but a few hours later all of them were gone…

One good point is that I had lots of recordings I would like to transfer to PC so I didn't bring in the TiVo, and HN didn't ask for it… winning I guess…

I'm pretty suspicious of this offer, they bought the ten year licence, they ran it into the ground, now they break the lifetime support promise and offer $100 off an item which is one of the main competitors to Foxtel. Why? What's in it for them?
It has been reported that Foxtel and tivoUSA are looking at teaming up to launch a new IQ box in Australia.

    • I think the lifetime support was for the product, and they decided it's lifetime was due to end on 31 October unfortunately for all of us.

I think that it simply came down to the unit not producing a return. Not enough users for paid content means that there was no money to enable the EPG to keep updated. However, I did take up the $100 discount offer and it came at the right time as my TiVo was losing channels every few days and needed constant re-scanning of the channels.

  • Writings been on the wall for some time… after looking around I got a Humax when they were on offer from HN

Works pretty well, and don't need any of that web download decode nonsense to get your recordings off.

The included WiFi adapter is really useful.

I do still prefer the TiVo guide layout…

    Adios TiVo

Wouldn't it be nice if they could send a software update that enabled the TiVo to read the broadcast EPG, or for some clever TiVo users to hack the licenced guide and keep it going.

I'm looking at fetch tv, but won't be buying from HN on principle, apparently the normal sale price is what the TiVo special deal is.

A lot of guys on Whirlpool have been able to get JB to match HN and therefore keep their TiVos:

      • Good news. I also looked at getting on via Optus as a Internet upgrade, but I think it would cost more overall than buying one outright.

If you are talking about getting the Optus Fetch box, be aware that it is locked down to their network and not as "accessible" as a retail box. I'm still holding out hope that the hacker community will be able to create their own "mothership" to call home to. They did it ~15 years ago with the Series 1 Tivo imported from USA, when we didn't have anything close here and PVRs weren't yet a thing.

        • @endotherm: it turns out that upgrading my internet and phone to the bundle that provides the fetch TV would cost more over 2 years than buying a fetch outright would anyway.

TiVo in Australia is alive and well. The TiVo community now have a workaround so that you can keep using your TiVo after Oct 31, 2017!
