Amazon's Description:

All of us use idioms, allusions, and sayings regularly but we seldom notice them because they are so ingrained in the English language. All of the terms in this book are at least four hundred years old while some go back even farther in time and all are still being used. We may not know their origins but they are an important part of our language, providing us a verbal shorthand to express ourselves more colorfully and more easily.

Since 1611, the King James Version of the Bible, which incorporates some expressions from earlier English translations, has been a major source for English idioms, allusions, and sayings. This book lists and describes over 1000 terms such as “powers that be,” “turn the other cheek,” and “writing on the wall” that demonstrate the Bible’s continuing influence on the language and cultures of English-speaking people around the world. Some of these terms will be recognized by many English speakers while some will be less familiar.

The reader will discover that becoming familiar with these terms will help him understand the English language better and also discover that the Bible remains a relevant book for contemporary culture …..

    A bargain of biblical proportions.

Lot: "Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof." Genesis 19:4-9

    • Amen to that.

      But what is context?

      • +2

If you dont know the context, then you havent really read the Bible. Lot, the most righteous man in Soddom, offering his virgin daughters to be raped instead of two strangers who he thought was angels sent by Yahweh.

      • +1

A mob of rapey gays from memory.

    • It is a narrative, the Bible never states that Lot was correct in this. Actually it can argued that Lot was not righteous in this regard, as found out later in Genesis (Lot has to deal with the sad consequences of his actions). It is a story about imperfect humans. Just like the violence found in it, and call to violence in the Psalms. These were humans writing this. Honestly the reason why we cringe at such a story is because the Bible and Christianity has had such an impact that while many are not religious, its moral and ethical aspects still exist in society.
Would you expect the Bible to 'play it safe' and never include these types of stories? Wouldn't that be more evidence that the Bible is a lie if it was all fluffy? Why include such a story if it didn't have some 'truth' about human nature in it?

        https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Peter+2%3A7-8…

        Peter calls him righteous..

We could go on all day and night to name how questionably "moral" this book really is. You might want to view it as "Sinful acts of humans before" but every bit of the sinful acts are actually condoned by Yahweh. I certainly wouldnt take any of those prophets as being "role models" for people these days. LOL..

      • +3

Utter nonsense. Lot and his family were supposedly saved because they were the only righteous people in Sodom and Gemorrah.

      • +2

Well call me demanding, but I'd prefer a holy book I'm told to live my life by or go to hell didn't include unlabelled stories about depravity in the same format as the stories I'm meant to be actively emulating.

Maybe I'm expecting too much from an all-knowing, all-powerful being though?

ROFL What a way to say that it was plagiarized.

I hope they have all of additions and interpolations highlighted for the ignorant.

The big shocker for me was that "Forgive them for they know not what they do", was first added in the KJV.

    • What you say is true. If the New Testament were originally in English then this passage should have been in there from the beginning. However this reading was found in the Greek and Latin manuscripts of the New Testament starting from the second century AD.

      • You have that backwards. The Greek also(with Vulgate) exposed the forgery and caused interest with the more modern scholars of the time of this enlightenment.

It is not in the Codex Sinaiticus, which is also the document that exposed the later forgery of the long ending of Mark.

        • This site lists 12 sources from the second century AD that reference it.
(And you are right that this site was written before the Codex Sinaiticus was revived)

possibly unrelated, but the other day an old man talked to me about philosophy. he loves philosophy. he then rattled on about how he knows everything about psychology. finally, he went on to say that theology is better than psychology, because:
"if you know the creator of man, you know man himself".
i didnt have the heart to tell him how deluded he was.

So that's where the line Let he who is stoned, cast the first sin comes from?

    • I find it hilarious how people reference this tome to backup their prejudiced beliefs but then try to dismiss some bits as e.g. only applying to the Jews. You either believe the fairy tale, or you don't.

Leviticus says not to eat shellfish (Lev. 11:9-12), use mixed seed or fabrics (Lev. 19:19), harvest the corners of fields (Lev. 19:9), and that homosexuality is wrong (Lev. 18:22; 20:13).

I just hope there is a heaven and hell; 'cause I like the thought of the Televangelists and "so called" Christian bigots wondering why the temperature is so high.

Well, they have a long line of precedents in front of him; from just about every religion there is. Where there is an absolute power structure it is wide open to abuse - literally and figuratively. I don't hold the current Pope in quite the disdain of his predecessors, but he is becomming less admirable as he goes along and gives in to the Vatican mind set.

    • Oh.. you mean 1 Corinthians 14:34-35:

Women[a] should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church

      (quoted from KJV)

Says a lot about the religion..

      • The command for husband to love and care for their wives was far more revolutionary when it was made and caused more ramblings in the early Church. Women are submissive when it suits them, see the many liberal politicians who all claim to be Feminists, but are only too willing to be submissive and where a headscarf when it comes to Islam. Pre-industrial scarcity effectively made all civilisations Patriarchal to some extent or another, while Christianity is still Patriarchal, if anything it toned it down compared with most cultural and religious groups.

        • +1

Sorry.. You've gone 360 degrees to say that the bible and the church is still misogynistic. I await the day when a Female becomes an official Pope of the Catholic church.

BTW.. Islam did not exist during the time of the Bible (New and Old Testaments). Islam grew from these religions and dates their ancestry back to the same roots as such.

Silence is called for three times in 1 Corinthians 14: in verses 28, 30 and 34.[5] In 1 Corinthians 14:28 and 30, silence is called for in specific situations to regulate congregational contributions to the meetings. (The “silence” in verses 28 and 30 is not gender specific.) It is very likely that the silence called for in verse 34 is also addressing a specific situation and is not meant to be a blanket statement to silence all women for all time in church meetings.

In fact, Paul’s intention could not have been to silence women at all the times during church meetings. In 1 Corinthians 11:5 Paul acknowledges, without disapproval, that women prophesied and prayed aloud in church.

Paul not only approved of praying and prophesying by women in the assembly but he encouraged it! Reading 1 Corinthians 11:10 with the literal, active voice (“has authority”) instead of the presumed, passive voice (“sign of authority”), Paul states that a woman has authority[6] (has the right!) to pray and prophesy . . . (Hicks 1990)

If Paul condones verbal ministry from women in chapter 11 it is very unlikely that he censures it in chapter 14. Paul was probably prohibiting a certain form of speech from the women in 14:34-35. Several theologians have tried to identify the type of speech that Paul appears to be disallowing.

        Common sense?

        • -1

"Common sense" is different from culture to culture, nation to nation. In this multicultural nation, which one are you talking about ?

        • +1

@frewer: Morals are also different culture to culture, nation to nation, so any of them…

        • -1

          @callum9999: > so any of them …

Therefore, the police should not arrest gang rape from these ethnic, India, some Africa nations. Or forced marriage, young marriage, slavery … these things are in other nation culture.

Come on man, it's 2017 you cant just say 'common sense' and leave it at that, soon or later we will arguing in circle … Gotta anchor your moral somewhere

        • +1

@frewer: Indeed. It astounds me that in 2017 people still believe the nonsensical (that's not up for debate - it doesn't make sense, PERIOD) bible (or Koran etc).

Though what morals we choose to enforce is a wholly different question to where your personal morals come from. While I can't speak for these mythical gang rape cultures, I can categorically state mine come from common sense. As does the majority of the population's - including you. At least I hope you don't think adulterers should be executed?

        • -1

          @callum9999:

          that's not up for debate

LOL there are DEBATES happening as we speak, wake up soon ?

          mythical gang rape cultures

not at all, here and here.

I see you elegantly avoided the question age old question
"Does fish jump to feels the water ? Does eagle plunge to feels the air ? How do you get this idea of right n wrong" - C.S.Lewis

We ( people from Earth ) cant do more than our belief, from that belief we make it into laws, all nations without exception.

If Biblical's moral doesn't ( which part ) not make sense then what make sense on this Earth ?

        • @frewer: Yes idiots are having debates. It's blatantly obvious (as admitted by large swathes of the Christian community - and the main reason why no two Christians will ever agree on everything) that the bible doesn't make sense. They at least have the decency to make up rubbish like "it was a different time" or "some are just metaphors - you have to pick out the real advice" instead of pretending it's rational or logical.

A story about Germany winning the world cup, rape on US college campuses and a high rape rate in Australia doesn't remotely come close to describing a culture in which gang-rape is encouraged/permitted.

I've not avoided it - I've told you, you just refuse to listen (as you've been programmed to do of course, there's no way religion could survive otherwise). COMMON SENSE. "Will my actions harm someone else? Yes, then it's probably bad". It's that simple.

What makes sense on Earth? Many things make sense - my own brain for starters. I see you're avoiding the question as to whether Australia should make adultery a capital offence (i.e. give the death penalty)? The bible says it should, so surely it's immoral not to?

        • @callum9999:

          Yes idiots are having debates

That rather a shallow statement. Ravi Zacharias, Craig Mohanty, Leikind and John Lennox just name a few. These a respectfully individual in intellect community, so are you 'smarter' than them ?

          rational or logical.

I really like it, and Im using it to persuade your head right now. However, it can only explain so must, it can't never explain evil, suffering, goodness, love, forgiveness. These can only deal with by the heart not the head.

Mate, Im convert so there is no 'programmed' in me, I've been live in the East n West. Im glad we can take that assumption out of you. Now, we do you mean by 'harm' ? In 2017 we have a lot of definition of harmfulness.

          Many things make sense

Hmm does these thing make sense to you Viet Nam, Iraq war, CIA hacking, corrupted politicians.
To your question, Jesus said: lets who without sins cast the first stone.
Talking capital offence, they called capital punishment when I was learning English. Yes bring it on, but make it available to corrupted politicians, as it is available in many other country. :)

        • @frewer: If they think the bible makes sense then yes, they're idiots…

Rationality and logic can easily explain evil, suffering, goodness, love and forgiveness. In fact, they explain then FAR better than "God did it". Converts are just as capable of being programmed as children are. It's incredibly obvious what I mean by harm - an action that causes pain or suffering.

They do indeed make perfect sense to me - things don't have to be nice, or desirable, to make sense. Jesus said many things - though it's interesting you refuse to follow his teaching given you're criticising others, or are you claiming you've never committed a sin?

So to clarify, you just admitted that you want the state to kill all adulterers? You're sick.

        • @callum9999:

If they think the bible makes sense then yes, they're idiots…

What make you think you are smarter than them, by what standard ?

Rationality and logic can easily explain evil, suffering, goodness, love and forgiveness

          Please enlightened me.

Converts are just as capable of being programmed as children are

Like how they are programming children in Australia ? So what program is this guy under taken?

Jesus said many things - though it's interesting you refuse to follow his teaching

What teaching is that i missed ?

I think you totally missed the big picture here. Australia does not allowed the capital punishment any more, could be because they realized that all human were made in the image of GOD, hence no one has the right to take a life of others and ought to to reflected in the laws of the land.

Why dont you mention something good out of the OS, you are cherry picking arent you ? Once again allows me to link history and present.
Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. 13 As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. - Deuteronomy 23.
In 2007 the BMJ readers choose the “sanitary revolution”(toilet) as greatest medical advance since 1840(bmj.com). Not antibiotic, not vaccine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWQG1YZS9l4&ab_channel=It%27…) Of course they dont contribute it to the Old Statement, rite ? Because science has no obligation to tell the truth, only fact, and fact change all the time.

        • @frewer: I didn't say I was smarter than them, I said they're idiots if they believe the bible makes sense.

Oh how I wish I could enlighten you - but I can't jangle exciting claims of magic invisible beings in the sky in front of you so that's unlikely… Those characteristics are easily explained by animal emotions, which themselves are explained by evolution and general biology.

"'If a man commits adultery with another man's wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death." Why are you refusing to follow the rules of your perfect book? Either you're going to hell or the bible doesn't make sense - pick one, you can't have it both ways.

And of course I'm cherrypicking - it seems you're even more beyond help than I could have imagined. Do you also moan about how people criticising the Nazis don't point out Hitlers good ideas? As wondrous as God is for informing us we can defecate in a hole in the ground (couldn't have gone one step further and told us about the actual toilet?), I really couldn't care less…

        • @callum9999: So you avoid the question of by what standard you call those idiots, hmm…
Now, you can't even explain evil, suffering, goodness, love and forgiveness by using your "rationality and logic", hmm…
I do what Jesus said regarding to that adulterer and adulteress. They are NOT my problem.

Oh Adolf Hitler had "good" ideas, what is it ? Nazi call it good others nation call it evil, or "Does fish jump to feels the water ? Does eagle plunge to feels the air ? How do you get this idea of right and wrong"

        • @frewer:Jesus Christ… I didn't address that question because I didn't make that claim - YOU did.

I can't explain them to someone of your limited intelligence, no. Though given your pathetic claim was that "God just did it", me listing the relevant scientific disciplines should be enough.

I see, so you follow the bit of the bible that says the complete opposite to the other bits of the bible then? And STILL maintain the book makes sense!?

What the hell are you talking about? What country thinks the autobahns are evil?

Actually, don't bother replying. Speaking to the brainwashed is always irritating but it's especially irritating when they're largely incoherent and can't form basic arguments.

        • @callum9999: Nope, you make a claim that your common sense, rationality and logic can explain basically anything.

I can't explain them to someone of your limited intelligence, no. me listing the relevant scientific disciplines should be enough.

Now dont pull out that ad hominem card, please. You can't even give one example for each category, then go ahead and personally attacked me … typical. At least, I attempt to list some evidence rather than you just pointing finger and call name.

I see that you failed to read the text in its context. it OS is the shadow of NS,
It's not the question of which country or who think what is evil or good. It is the question of WHERE is that evil vs good standard from.

Having to prove the existence of God to an atheist is like having to prove the existence of the sun, at noon on a clear day. Yet millions are embracing the foolishness of atheism. “The Atheist Delusion” pulls back the curtain and reveals what is going on in the mind of those who deny the obvious. It introduces you to a number of atheists who you will follow as they go where the evidence leads, find a roadblock, and enter into a place of honesty that is rarely seen on film.

Jesus stated that everyone who is keen on following him, is free to do so. If some people are expressed through atheism, I am okay, as a Christian. All people who believe in Christianity, should know we can't force anyone to believe in God. And that point separates us from the (Luciferian) Islam.
