Nintendo Switch Console - $439.99 @ Costco (Membership Req.)

2240

Hey Guys,
First time posting, went with a friend who is a Costco member to the Docklands store,
They were selling the Nintendo Switch for $439,
which is by far the cheapest I have seen it,
Only downside is that you must be a Costco member and that member must pay.

      • Bigw down the road?

Switch was pretty much sold out at Macquarie shopping center Sydney today

Had to walk around to find one at jb hifi

The chick there was nice enough to price match big w Zelda bundle

Played it for an hour and it put me to sleep

The music is mellow, makes me sleepy

    • When it's yellow, let it mellow.

Went to Costco Crossroads today to get some cheap fuel and restock my wagyu steak. Walked out with my wagyu steak, a Nintendo Switch and the Zelda game. Past hour was just a blur, I don't even remembered putting the Switch in my trolley.

Goddamn I hate and love Costco.

    • did you at least get a free lunch though from all the free samples lol

  • +4

maintain membership and get the lifetime costco warranty.

    • +3

Agreed!!! Costco recently refund in full a faulty phone that I bought off them 1.5 years ago..
All I wanted was for them to repair it and they refund me instead.

I can vouch for their customer service.

      • +6

My return at Costco went something like this:

"Hi I don't have a receipt but I bought this food and the quality wasn't…"

"Here's your full refund in cash. We'll look into improving this product."

[Looks at money in hand, bewildered] "Err… aren't you going to try and convince me the food is supposed to be like that, or try to force me to exchange, or offer me store credit, or only refund onto the card I bought it with, or some other BS?"

[Laughs] "You didn't really think all that stuff most stores do was actually justifiable or necessary, did you?"

      • +1

not everything is a bargain in Costco but the extended warranty really is a perk, especially if you plan on having a lot of home appliances from them.

  • Plenty of stock left at Auburn (NSW) store.
Zelda and Bomberman were $75 each.

  • 100+ up votes on ozb? Really curious how it sells in the first week.

I will probably only buy it a few years down the track.

  • They had 40 in Docklands, sold out in 10 mins.

  • +1

Remember guys that you can cancel your membership at any time and get a full refund if you really are a cheap skate and never want to shop at Costco for anything else.

  • Does anyone even know if the new console is any good?

    • +2

Yes those of us who bought it yesterday know it's very good.

        happens with every hardware launch.

as the article says, relatively rare considering the number of units they're shipping.

that said, sometimes it's worth waiting for a second iteration

    • +2

      Coming from someone who

      1. does not own it
      2. has no idea about the unit
      3. general dribble talker
      • He is right though.. has a floppy dstics, plastic screen and who the hell puts a charging socket in the bottom of the unit.. should be the top .. disappointed

        • Not really supnigs
Pro controller resolves many issues for me
I get 3-4 hours out of it undocked
Can't do that with a Sony or Xbox
Overall I am happy with it

  • +2

For those that own it already - does Zelda get boring? Farcry/Assassin's creed always bored me, but elder scrolls does not, I guess is the game deep enough?

    • +6

No, any "real" fan of nintendo will know Zelda was one of the best games of all time
I bought the pro controller and thus far have found Zelda to be quite fun
By the time I finish it, more games will hit the market anyway, so far I am happy to say the following:

      1. Unit docking and undocking ability is easy, love how I can play on my tv and then go to bed and continue playing, can't do that on any other console
      2. Seems to be good quality, really well built, excellent cooling system
      3. Overall experience would be 9/10
      • +3

        Why not 10/10?

        • +1

It's cheap as far as tablets go which goes to say I found the screen middle-of-the-roadish. There must not be an oleophobic coating because it's smudge city if you touch it. But "expensive as a console", obviously made at a price that allows for future price reductions which NOA CEO Reggie has confirmed. I still really like it, comes with essential gaming accessories and a support time frame that no tablet can match. The one thing they haven't skimped on is the CPU/GPU which is class leading for a tablet. Literally everything they should have done to improve it, screen, storage, would have added to the price, but all the fundamentals are there and class leading in the portable space, controls, GPU. All the while not pretending to be anything it's not, no 4K gimmicks it can't live up to. That's why 9/10.

@smithydll: thanks but I was talking to shawncro 222

        • +1

          @smithydll:

I got it, it's good! Kills the 3DS for pure handheld enjoyment, particularly for the older generation who are use to triple A games.

    • this is a huge expansion and improvement on the 3d Zelda games, but if you don't like open world games then you probably won't like this one.

    • +1

If you enjoy SKyrim or the Witcher, f*** those games, play this instead.

Recent sandbox games have gotten so stagnant, with having a large map but linear gameplay and progression (Looking at you, Horizon Zero Dawn!). Zelda lets you finish the tutorial and then says "….Alright, off you go! Bye! Beat Ganon at some point". I've had an absolute ball with this game. In the last decade there has been no game that captres my sense of "Ooh what's over there, ooh what's this, oh gosh what might this be" than this game does. The map is littered with things to do.

And if you ever get bored of adventuring you can shield surf with a wooden shield over rocks and watch Link ragdoll and break all his limbs. 10/10.

      • Witcher 3 wasn't very good, and yeah it seems Horizon ZD is basically what people thought it would be, Far Cry basically. Witcher seems to get credit for story over gameplay, sadly alot of games seem to be getting praise from hipster bloggers for that alone.

Nintendo is kind of doing there own thing with the open world like past Zeldas, which is good.

The better open world games are ones that focus on fun first, Zelda, Saints Row 3, 4s, Infamous 2, Prototype 1 2, Crackdown 1 2 , Lego City Undercover. Even Gat out of Hell was decent for a dlc game. San Andreas for the time did it right, but everyone just copied its worst aspects and doubled down on repetition the way Ubisoft did with alot of Asassins Creed doing GTA hand me downs.

Skyrim was neat, it had silly things like stealing and getting attacked if caught. I'd put Skyrim up there, but for similar reasons.

        • +1

As an example of why Zelda is better than other sandbox games: In Zelda, you can climb up any surface, rather than sticking to the "Holy Handy-spots" in Assassin's Creed games and its rip offs. Climbing in Zelda has a stamina bar, which decreases faster the steeper the incline, and you can take a chunk out of your stamina to jump and make it faster. And you also can't climb in the rain, adding an extra layer of depth to the whole system.

In Assassin's Creed you just hold the direction of the climb spots…. Yay….

  • you can get nintendo switch for about $435aud at amazon.de includes shipping fee.

    • +2

Why bother when I can have it now for a little extra

      • +1

Nah maaaan you gotta wait 20 years and buy one at a flea market for 20 cents.

        • +1

          pretty much
I am happy with the unit for the price I paid
EB Games matched all bundle pricing / did deals for me, overall good experience
I love the fact I can undock and go outside with it no problems
It is by far superior in that regard
Almost brings me back to the PSP days

        • @shawncro 222: yes I'm going to treat this like a PSP. I got a tempered glass screen protector and case and everything. I'm ready.

        • @FatBlanket:

Pretty much except its dockable which is a good feature, overall its a good device
          definately worth it for me

        • +2

          @shawncro 222:

Hey mate are you saying that EB Games price matched the Switch and Zelda bundle from Big W? ($519)

If so is there any chance you would upload your reciept?

        • +1

@shawncro 222: sorry man do you have evidence of the price match?

  • +4

Got mine at Canberra Costco ~10am yesterday. They definitely didn't have as much stock as they had dummy boxes.
Have obviously been too busy playing Zelda & 1-2 Switch to post on here. The console is fantastic!

    • is 1 2 switch worth buying i grabbed zelda but looking at the reviews doesnt much say about 1 2 switch
      zelda is amazing

      • +2

I grabbed zelda and 1 2, I would say if you have young ones or friends that are happyvto be a little bit goofy then its worth it otherwise nope.

      • -1

1 2 Switch is alot of fun, highly underestimated game. Whether positive or negative, wouldnt trust modern reviewers, they only push what they think stereotypical internet hard core gamer minority group think approves of. They're basically marketing firms for some companies/games or clickbait controversy generators if a game doesnt pander to the industry.

        Bomberman is cool too.

  • There were a few left at Costco Moorabbin when I was there at noon today.

  • +2

    Fyi.

    Costco Ringwood Vic.

Super Bomberman $74.99. Cheapest so far and the only place that has stock. Big W and Target and Ebgames Chadstone No More.

    1 2 Switch $57.99. Big W cheapest $55.

    Zelda $75.98. Big W cheapest $75

Pro Controller. $84.99. Cheapest. Most sell $99

JoyCons. $97.99. Cheapest. Most sell $119 or $99

    No console though.

    • If you don't want physical, Bomberman was on the estore for 69.99, the only game at the moment thay was cheaper than the cheapest in retail outlets. I would prefer pay the extra 5 and get a physical games, just an FYI.

      • Actually $65 on the estore so $10 savings, just checked.

  • +2

Something tells me that as soon as the hype has gone these prices are going to drop like the wii u. Just don't see these taking away any gamers from Xbox or PS4 and people already have expensive phones to game on the go with which is why the vita died.

    • +6

I felt that the wii u never really dropped much in price. When it got to 200, stock was almost always extremely limited and I was never able to get a console. Seems like it's a Nintendo thing.

    • Lol don't think so Nintendo hardly has sales on games or consoles maybe 2 years down the track but there main selling games never drop unfortunitly :(

I waited out on the wiiu for over 2 years and still no drop so just bought the black version on Gumtree for $200

The only reason I say for ps4/Xbox games drop dramatically is the fact there on both xbox/ps4 also some on PC

Where Nintendo is a standalone console there is just a higher demand for them certain games

  • +6

People believed that the PS4 has innovation while Nintendo has moved 10 levels above PS4. People are getting bored of the same Playstation games and graphics they need sometime differnt. This is why Sony fanboys are moving over to Nintendo switch :)

    • +1

so why did they all buy ps4s and not the wiiU then ? apart from being able to play on the go which hardly anyone does apart from kids this offers nothing new, in fact it offers less as the graphics arnt new.

      • +1

In fact PS did try to put on the go at PS3 performance level experience on PS Vita however has failed due to on the go gaming still more for casual gamers. IMO pro gamers already have PS4 or Xbox One won't invest another $200 for a PS Vita so Nintendo sees this Switch one console fits both on the go and home use as its advantage to target back onto the Pro gamers. It is not as powerful as PS4 or Xbox One but a lot of pro gamers believe if want to go extreme performance they would go for PC gaming anyway. Wii U fails mainly because it is so underpowered for game developers to develop any games to worth the effort not to mention not an easy direct port to Wii U will make good use of second screen on the game pad.

      • +1

Lol the console is still new give it time for the graphics I still remember when the ps3 first come out graphics was ugly as fu££k.

But the ps3 came a long way after last of us and uncharted 3.

Still think Sony could of waited another year for the ps4 as the ps3 was still going strong .

But then again Microsoft would of had a advantage if they waited another year.

        • +2

Microsoft has the advantage of being immortal; their OS theoretically allows for the Xbox and PC to outlive both competitors.

PS4 has a 'cool' factor, and a number of good western exclusives. Unfortunately the console is not future proof; it's enjoying a boom now with its VR and exclusives but I wonder how long it will last.

The Switch is teetering on the brink of either major success or major failure. On the one hand I find it does very little more for me than me Wii-U already does. But after playing Zelda on my Wii-U gamepad primarily alllllll weekend, I can see where they are coming from. It's still going to rest primarily on the games available for the platform; a great first start with Zelda, but Nintendo needs those third party titles to keep this one going between their growing first party release titles.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: did Nintendo kill the game pad map and inventory function for Wii U just to make Switch not an inferior version compared with Wii U version? I don't have the game yet but what I have heard the Wii U game pad doesn't add extra functionality than the Switch version.

        • @FrankMcFuzz:

I'm sure they started making Zelda for the wiiu long time before the switch and they just ported it over to the switch waiting on Mario odessey.
I'm sure that will make the switch shine and like you said hope they have decent third party titles coming for it just hope it doesn't turn out to be like the vita.

Microsoft come a long way on the xone with cross gaming and backward compatibility pretty much brought them back in after there stuff up on the e3 announcement where they said can't share your games then they canceled it I'm sure Sony was going to do the same and realised what was going on and canned it with a day one update.

        • @wtfnodeal: It has no additional wii-U features. But to be entirely honest, at least I only have to look at one screen for once. In a late night session I couldn't even feel it when the controller melted away and I was totally in the game. Zelda is a fantastic game, but unfortunately, best played on the tablet, as it tends to have pretty sharp frame drops whilst trying to view on the TV. (Notably rain and particle effects).

I don't like when devs use the gamepad as a gimmick, but rather when it is a central gamepad mechanic, like Super Mario 3D World's tap platform levels, and Wonderful 101's…. Weird… Really weird sections lol.

There are gamepad functionalities though, like gyro puzzles and aiming with the console.. But after Star Fox I turned that off IMMEDIATELY! >:( lol.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: the original Wii U game pad feature is supposed to allow you to switch between weapons in the middle of the fight without having to pause. God damn Nintendo kills this feature to downgrade it to match Switch version and made up an "upgrade" excuse to delay releasing it on Wii U 2 years ago.

        • Yeah but new Xbox is coming out in less than 9 months , the switches graphics are going to start looking old very fast. I really think they should of put all their money on VR as I think it's going to be the future.

      • Because internet gamers only care for stereotypical hardcore gamer internet minority approved experiences. Very hiveminded. Wii U had poor marketing, but as the majority of gamers are casual, as are most games, Switch will sell due to far better marketing. How much is still up in the air. The stereotypical internet gamer types will buy a system if its popular, part of the reason ps4 sold was consistent marketing from the previous system where as the other 2 systems had poor marketing at the time.

Hooked on to Horizon Zero Dawn ATM and have got other games that i bought for cheap $$$ and need to play b4 i think abt getting a switch

    • +1

I was playing Horizon Zero Dawn. Got up to the part where they want me to go to some Carja gate. And then I got Zelda.

And now I don't think I'll play HZD ever again.

      • +1

A friend of mine said the exact same thing. Was playing Horizon, started Zelda, couldn't care less about Horizon after that.

He'll go back to it eventually, he said, but for now, it's Zelda all the way.

  • +3

Don't know when the prices changed, but I just got Zelda for $73.99 and the Pro Controller for $83.99 at the Canberra warehouse.

  • 1 x left at Moorabbin

  • Heaps of stock at Docklands.

  • Excellent deal. Thanks OP. Off to Costco tomorrow
