Exactly.
Then you need a pc on 24/7 to record, and can't output it to your tv as easily.
These all in one setups are good in that respect, you can put the nvr near your tv and just change inputs with remote and see all the cameras when the front doorbell rings or you need to see what the dog is up to out the back , etc.
Thank you - the price was good so that's what got me, no we don't need 8 cameras.
I'll keep my eye out :)
Crappy footage from cameras of no use when claiming with insurance or any authority. You need high detail of the individual or object you want to monitor/track. Invest in higher quality cameras. HIKVision ip cameras are pretty good.

the first thing you need to ask yourself is why do you want a cctv and what do you want it to do? the second is how much do you want to spend per camera?
we bought the swann dvr8 kit https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/286570 from jb hifi not long ago. this was after one of our vehicles got broken into and ransacked one night. we've installed three cams and two solar motion floodlights to cover the vehicles. we use the cctv to deter would be burglars. the remaining three cams will be installed when it srops raining.
the cams captures 720p digital images and sends it as an analogue signal to a dvr, which then records it digitally. the video quality is reasonable for the price that we paid. the cams and the dvr are made by dahua. a competitor of hikvision.
the aldi kit consists of eight cams. that is enough to cover four sides, a front door, a back door, a driveway and a side exit. the record resolution:960 x 576 is one below 720p http://videos.cctvcamerapros.com/surveillance-systems/what-i…. the faces in the 960 isn't as clear as the 720p or the 1080p, but still recognisable. the cams are 976 x 496. the kit is only $299 which is priced accordingly to the resolution. keep in mind that a professional installation may cost about $200 per cam depending on it's location.
Great - that helps a lot !
It is a tempting way to start out. Maybe a cheaper solution to add piece of mind as a deterrent, rather than as a response to an actual break in.
I reckon 8 cameras would be almost what I need and wiring them around the house shouldn't be too hard for me.
Can anyone comment on wether the cables are easy to extend or shorten?
Does anyone know if they might drop the price of these units after a week or two? Would be better value if they drop off some more $.
With everything, it depends on what you're going to use it for and what you hope to get out of it.
The price is not bad for what it is but:
The camera resolution looks a bit low: 976 x 496
Cabling 8 cameras through the house would be such a pain.
And do you really need 8 cameras?
Why not get a few IP cameras instead? Some of the xiaomi deals have been pretty good. Just need to add power and WiFi for those to work.
