The NASA 2017-2018 Catalog of Free Software Is Now Available

Found this on Lifehacker this morning. Hope it might help some of our members.

NASA has just released it’s 2017-2018 software catalog, which includes hundreds of free, royalty-free applications for a wide variety of uses.

The catalog itself is pretty wide ranging, covering everything from drone aerodynamics to video compression. While most of us won’t have a ton of use for any of this, there’s some broadly useful stuff, including a spacewalking simulator built with Unity and a huge collection of textures. NASA has released their catalog like this the last few years, but they keep expanding the scope. You’ll find everything in a searchable database over at NASA.

So.. Anyone can use this software for any purpose?

    • To answer my own question:

General Public Release: For codes with a broad release and no nondisclosure or export control restrictions
Open Source Release: For collaborative efforts in which programmers improve upon codes originally developed by NASA and share the changes
U.S. Release Only: For codes available to U.S. persons only
U.S. and Foreign Release: For codes that are available to U.S. persons and persons outside of the U.S. (who meet certain export control restrictions)
U.S. Government Purpose Release: For codes that are to be used on behalf of the U.S. government by a federal agency or business/university under a federal contract/grant/agreement.

  • Indeed if you are bit of space geek. Someone who is interested in this stuff would enjoy the Spacewalking Simulator. There are some Video compression software..etc
