Samsung / Sony 55" TV

Hey guys

Will be moving out soon and will need to upgrade to a 55" TV.
Been seeing some deals late last year for Samsung or Sony 55" TVs being advertised and am kicking myself for not purchasing back then.

Couple of questions:
- Under $1100 price range, which TV generally performs better?
- Is there a time of year when I can expect more TVs to start coming on sale, or do I have to wait until june 30?

Thanks!

  • 55" UHD?

Personal preference is Samsung TVs. I suggest getting extended warranty for peace of mind.

Just look out for deals at any electrical stores + wait for Amex buy $300 get $100 credit and price match at Harvey Norman.

You might be able to save a bit if you buy last years model as well.

    • Extended warranty is always a must. I'll keep my eyes peeled!

      • Samsung after sales support are amazing! TV over 2 years old, no extended warranty. TV just stopped working. Contacted Samsung who advised that under Australians consumer law, if its an electronic fault - there's automatic coverage for up to 5 years.

They sent out a technician after 2 days and by the weekend they offered to either provide a brand new TV in the new 4K model or refund the cash paid. New TV was delivered a week later.

Amazed by the support and fast turnaround.

That said, I might still go for Sony if you need something like KODI as they're the only models where it can be directly installed onto.

  • I'm thinking the same thing. I'm considering this TV from Costco, if they've got any left: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/292615

The price might be higher today. I bought one yesterday for $1089.99, which was supposedly the last day at that price.

      • I saw this TV, but looked into it and realised it had quite a poor response rate (up to 19ms response) - not so good for gaming unfortunately!

  • Why do you need to upgrade?

    • Will be moving out and want a bigger TV for the living room :)

  • I got the KU6000W 55' from samsung for $1098, yes I know it has been cheaper but thought I did okay. If your a massive gamer or love sports Harvey Norman have a samsung 55' for (high $1400s) which is 200hz P.S (not sure if the harvey norman deal is still valid)

    • Just recently purchased the same TV for the same price. Really good imo!

Yeh but it was $950ish in November from GG with 20% ebay deal… meh. Also considered the Hisense but wasn't impressed with a previous 42' model I purchased a while back & sony's remotes are junk. Fingers crossed the samsung remote holds up

    • How does this TV compare for gaming?
I did see the deal, but I had a look and the response time was quite poor.

I enjoy my gaming quite a bit, so that will be a factor in my decision

  • The salesman said that gamers and sport lovers need the higher hz which from my understanding (and anyone correct me if I im wrong) is the equalivant to framerate. So the higher hz is how smooth the picture is between frames. The best example would be a close up shot of end to end football on afl coverage. The ball is moving very quickly and the higher the hz the better the picture in this situation. Sorry don't play video games so cant use this as an example lol

  • Having owned Sony TVs all my life, 2 of them being "smart", I would recommend avoiding them from now on. Simply due to the lag when switching channels and losing up the home screen etc,
