Delayed flight - forced to miss connecting flight

Good Morning organizers,

This is my first forum post and I need advice your advice on this one.

I was due to fly home from Albury to Gold Coast today. My flight plan was 9:50am Albury -> 11:00am Sydney with Qantas then Sydney 13:05 -> Gold Coast with Jetstar

For some unexpected reason, Qantas cancelled my 9:50 flight and I'm now booked in the 12:15 Albury -> 13:35 Sydney flight

As you can see, the new flight schedule means I will miss my 2nd leg from Sydney to Gold Coast flight.

Now, since my jetstar flight was priced-matched from the $30 tigerair promo a few months back, there isn't an option to change my jetstar schedule and I'm forced to pay for a new ticket which is $145 + $35 baggage = $180 :( So pretty much, I have to fork out an extra $180 cos of the Qantas cancelled flight.

Am I eligible for some sort of compensation from Qantas?? Or is this the ozbargain karma :p

Thanks all.

  • Hi,

    Jetstar is currently offering SYD-OOL @ 9.40PM for $75.
Maybe phone Jetstar and see if you can be bumped.

    Also, lodge a complaint with:

    • Thanks for your reply Holden

yeh the 9:40 isn't feasible for me since I have an event on at 6pm. I've now booked the 16:10 Sydney -> 16:30 GC flight

Tigerair for some reason is charging $349 from Sydney to Gold Coast. WTF?

No you can't claim anything from Qantas. But if you have travel insurance you could use that.

But to lodge a claim it cost $200 minimum.

      • assuming op is with citibank which has $200 excess for unexpected cancellation under interstate flight inconvenience insurance

        your arranged travel is cancelled or delayed by the airline because of mechanical breakdown, riots, strikes, civil commotion (but not an act of terrorism), weather conditions or natural disasters;

        the following could be claimed:

        Unexpected cancellation $3,000
Flight delay 4 hours or more,$80 per person up to $300
Missed connection 4 hours or more, $80 per person up to $300

If it was a single booking then it would be up to Qantas to reschedule you.

Did you talk Qantas and ask them if they can put you on a different flight to Gold Coast?

Or can they refund you? Jetgo has $249 from Albury to Brisbane this afternoon so maybe that will be cheaper if Qantas refunds you?

13.1 When a Refund is Available
You will be entitled to a refund if we:

    • are unable to carry you and you have a confirmed reservation
    • delay your flight to the extent that you have to cancel your travel

  • If it was the same airline for both legs you may get sympathetic treatment. But Qantas probably dissociates themselves from Jetstar. I would ring anyway.

It especially sucks since now it would have been cheaper to fly in a package with Virgin.

It's a real decision how long to allow for a transfer involving discounted tickets and different carriers. I think 3-4 hours gives some flexibility. I sometimes fly to a destination with fog issues and they can cancel flights at the drop of the hat, so I would allow for their next flight after having that happen.

This is the risk you take when booking legs separately and not on a single booking with the same airline or code-share/partner airline.

Best option is to check what options are available on your credit card as some will allow you to claim if you used the CC to purchase the tickets.

  • Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies. I'm now at Sydney airport in a 3hr layover waiting for my GC flight at 4:10

I used my ANZ qff black to purchase my tickets, I will have a good read when I get home in GC

More details regarding my tickets if that helps. So i used my qff points to purchase the Albury to Sydney leg + $20ish for tax and $27 + baggage for my Jetstar ticket thanks to price matching with the Tigerair

So initially my trip would've only costed me just under 90bucks all together. It was a good bargain to begin with, not any more :(

Get Mike Ross to help you :)

your own risk for not allowing a large enough connection time.

    • Over 2 hours for a domestic connection? Should be plenty of time.

      • your own judgement. 2 hours is hardly anything IMHO.

99% would be ok, but your own risk.

I am always the idiot who sits around for 6 hours, but i've never missed a connection in 500+ flights, or arrived late once.

  • May be too late but have you spoken to any one at Qantas Group? They move these bookings all the time (the only difference is they proactively do it to sectors on the same booking)

    • Yeh I've called Qantas and they sent me an online link for me to lodge a complaint. I've done that and now waiting to hear back from them.

I don't think it's worth claiming insurance from my credit card. I used the ANZ Qantas Frequent Flyer Black and it has a $250 excess if I wish to claim.
