Which content insurance company is good, or which ones must I avoid?

Background:

I live in a top floor unit in a strata building. Recently blocked gutters caused rainwater to overflow and splash bucketloads of water into my apartment. Never had that problem before so I left my windows open for ventilation. Nothing major this time as I was home when it happened.

I am concerned if it happens again I will end up with soaked floorboards if not more damage. So its time to look into contents insurance.

Is there any insurance companies with good reputation, or suggest ones that I should definitely avoid?

My cheapest option came up as Woolworths but I have read horrible reviews on choice.

Thanks in advance for everyone's input!

  • So did you contact the body corp/strata to get the gutters fixed?

Contents, I use Coles. Had a claim when a dishwasher hose burst and they were fantastic to deal with so I am happy to stay with them.

    • Yes, but they aren't in a rush to fix things as usual.

      • That's prob typical of body corps but at least it is written and recorded so if it happens again they can't knock it back.

  • allianz/your bank who you have dealt with for years.
    aami/bingle etc are baaaad

  • check out auspost contents insurance - currently 20% off when getting a quote online.

I did a quote for home and contents last night and it was ~$450 less than my current insurer.

stating the obvious - please read the Product Disclosure Statement before purchasing this product and making sure it meets your needs and has all the features you want with a contents insurance policy.

  • some/all plans have limits on individual items not appraised, so either get your jewelleries appraised (every X years) or find another plan

  • I'd recommend against CommInsure, and really the same for any of the big banks.

Do a thorough inventory and calculate the replacement cost of everything. Then decide what excess you're happy with. Then get quotes and check the PDS for exclusions (like water seepage!) and limits (eg video games, eneloop collection).

Oh and remember to adjust for inflation every year. It can really add up over time.
