Where to take printers for disposal?

Hi, Just wondering where I should take two A3 printers for disposal. I had dabbled in A3 printing but struggled to use often enough and was always disappointed in the size of the margins on A3 booklet printing, seemingly impossible to get nice and narrow and thus a bit of a waste of time. Anyway a moot point… this brother and hp 7300 are cactus ("fatal printer error" in HP with no real acknowledged remedy…. What an outrage..). I'll stick with my trusty a4 office jet with attached CIS which hasn't missed a beat in about a decade. (admittedly a bit of geekery setting up in the first place but found that as long as all printer warnings were simply ignored.. and regularly topping up the ink.. it has been great)

So wish I could have known what a waste of money these A3 ones have turned out to be..

So.. disposal.. just the tip or somewhere else? I'm just North of Brisbane.
Thanks everyone.

Gumtree? Someone might still be interested in them.

Otherwise check your local council's website on how/where to dispose electronics wastes.

  • Offer them for free on OZbargain?

Officeworks will take them for recycling.

    • Also Harvey Norman. They don't advertise it, but my local Harveys has a dumpster specifically for e-waste from the public. I found out about it on my Council's website.

  • Lazy man's option is to put it on the nature strip and hope someone takes it for copper/gold recovery.

Yes, a sign saying free saves a trip to the council tip in my area. 15 years and I have only been there twice.

With a free sign they will be gone in 15 minutes.

Source: north brisbanian who picks up free stuff left on the nature strip.

        • Worst part is when they strip and leave the plastic :)

@Frugal Rock: Or when they used to smash the CRT neck, take the yoke and leave the rest of the TV. Never left a TV out myself, there's council recycling for that, but saw a lot of old TVs scavenged that way.

I think your best bet is to dismantle its bits and throw it out in your own / neighbours rubbish.

If you look at broken printers that sell on ebay you will see they do not sell at all, even for $1.

Otherwise put it back in a big box and send it off to a random 'Reply Paid' address you find on the net… Maybe to a company who you hate.

  • Thanks everyone, all good ideas. I might keep one on hand for oversized feeder scanning (backing up old print music etc). I hope whoever reads my post is at least warned that a3 booklet printing can be disappointing on these consumer units due to margins…

  • check if your tip accepts e-waste.. or a lot of offices are doing e-waste recycling now as well

Some councils have e-waste drop off points. Yarra Council does in Melbourne. However, if you are dumping your PCs make sure you either destroy, or properly erase, the hard drives first. Saw a guy harvesting them one night, you don't want to leave sensitive info on them.

  • Funny, been looking for an A3 (must be colour laser) multifunction printer bargain entry on OzB for over a year now, seems that class has dried up completely.

Thanks minksta for the mention on margins.

    • 'tis a very rare beast you seek. No wonder there are no bargains.

      • It's sad though, there were a couple a good while back, ah well, patience I guess.

  • Assuming you're in Nambour here is the local council's info on disposal of e-waste:

e-waste will still be taken at all of council's waste facilities (at no cost - there is a maximum of 10 items per delivery).

    • Thanks for that, much appreciated..
