For overrated and over priced Chinese food that you can get in Hurstville for half the price

  • Papi Chulo in Manly is quite good.

damn.. just spent $2k at Merivale (est. Restaurant) last week for a dinner for 10! This $10 would have come mighty handy then.

    • $10 tip, or sparkling water.

      • Ha! I wish the tip was $10! I'd happily pay that. There was a compulsory 10% gratuity. So ended up paying $200 just on the tip! I'm sure there are plenty of waiters/waitresses on OzB and they probably disagree with me, but I think it's ridiculous to have 10% service charge especially when the restaurant is already that expensive!!
(Note: 10% service charge is for a group of 8 or more!)

WTF do we have compulsory gratuities in Australia????

There's a reason that the minimum wage is close to $20/hour, and restaurant staff are expected to be paid at least that in today's environment.

For those of you arguing that some restaurants pay their staff $10/hour, this illegal practice does indeed occur however in those sorts of establishments it is also equally likely that any gratuity left for wait staff will be subsumed by the rogue employers anyway.

@KaptnKaos: Yup! I was surprised too. But most big restaurants do that, I recently found out. Here are the list of restaurants I approached and they ALL had 10-12% gratuity for pax of 8-10 or more.
Altitude Restaurant - Shangri La, The Rocks,Sydney
          Cafe Sydney, Circular Quay
O Bar and Dining, Wynyard, Sydney
          est. Restaurant, Wynyard, Sydney
          …..
I didn't bother looking for others after that. Complete rip off I reckon! Having a bigger group should mean more business for them. Don't pass on the extra cost of having to employ one more wait staff (if that) back on to the customer!

ANZ have today stopped issuing Amex cards on their rewards and frequent flyer cards for new customers and 5 August for existing ones. No more Amex lounge and no more Amex offers. I expect other banks to follow suit if ANZs rationale is to be believed. Massive blow for Amex I expect.

El Loco at Slip Inn is actually a great place for drinks and nachos. Highly recommended. Think they have happy hours before 6 every evening. There are stairs going down on the back that has an open space for drinks. Should come handy when I am there next! Thanks!

    • Nearly every merivale venue has happy hour 5-7 (some variations apply from venue to venue) even the more expensive ones ie est and ivy (not poolclub as they mainly do cocktails) for beers, wines and house spirits ($6 at ivy as far as I know). I bartendered there through uni
