Seagate 500GB Wireless Hard Disk Drive $49 @ Target (Instore Only) (Limited Stock)

Checked my postcode on the website and the nearest store had 'Limited Stock'. Went to the store and 4 were in stock, picked up 2. Many stores have 'Limited Stock' so possibly a few remaining.

Good price & shows available locally for me…

    So checked reviews:
You can connect 3 devices at one time. All 3 devices can watch 3 different movies. Amazon

    But
there's very little to recommend anyone to buy this device (compared to larger capacity wireless storage)
It is relatively bulky for a storage device, and something more portable would have been preferred. Seagate oddly chose to fit in a USB 2.0 port rather than a USB 3.0 model, something that makes it a chore to transfer large amounts of data; it would probably take days to transfer half a terabyte of data.

    However…
(The focus of the streaming feature on this drive is exactly that: streaming, and not file transfers.) That said, the highlights of this drive are its mobility and media-sharing capability, and those will play a bigger role than sending data through a USB port (3.0 or not) for most on-the-road users. So long as you don't intend to also use this drive for frequent wired backups, the USB 2.0 limitation shouldn't be a big deal.

That review has Setup instructions, directly connect & stream to Chromecast, connect to internet via WiFi + this drive at same time, etc

    • How are you seeing the locally option online says sold out for me that's it no option of checking local stock

      • On Android phone… (so may differ by browser)
        Clicking link in Deal Description,
        Out of stock online,
        Find in Store, enter postcode.

Only store showing available is walking distance.
Good price, just don't know I want it.

Amazon reviews show a few issues
OK but sadly you cannot use it at all without using Seagate's media software.
I was hoping I could access it thru Wifi and it would appear on a PC or phone as available storage. It does NOT do this so if you want it for that, forget it.
I wouldn't mind using the Seagate wireless app, but it's clunky, slow and not very intuitive. Their own instructions for making a playlist do not work because the menu options differ from what they tell you.
Also the charge could last a little longer. If we are playing music from this drive it only lasts for about 2 hours. So my conclusion is this is OK product, but the software that runs it needs great improvement.

      and
The battery life is extremely disappointing, the speed is incredibly slow, and the app is terrible.

      and
Unfortunately, the battery life is extremely short, especially given the drive's specific purpose. The battery is dead after 2 - 2.5 hours, maximum, of continuous video playback. And the Wi-Fi is inactive while charging, so plugging it into the car charger while watching a movie is impossible.

      and
You will not be able to stream any DRM movies (Digital Copy and/or iTunes-purchased movies) to Apple devices (iPad, iPod, iPhone) running iOS 8 or later. There is no fix or workaround. Apple just decided not to let customers stream videos from external devices. (lot of complaints - need to strip DRM)

Must be used via App… showing long lists of movies etc, sorted alphabetically by title - a lot of scrolling. Videos need to be MP4 & music MP3 according to a few reviews.

  • USB 2.0 …

Just one of the many limitations reported.

The more I read reviews, the more I ask "why?".

Controlled by clunky app, showing alphabetical list of files, which must be in acceptable formats, and wireless within only about 3m, WiFi not password locked as supplied, short battery life, WiFi won't work if charging, larger size than many expected,,…

Main use in reviews - streaming different movies & music to up to 3 devices when travelling. But only short trips as reportedly can't stream while charging & battery only lasts as little as 2 hours…

      I'm out.

Confirmed by OzBargainer Can't use wirelessly when charging via micro-USB
Pretty useless in a WiFi (streaming) device.

  • If you were in a bind looking for a HD to update an older PS3 with, the HD inside can be removed and doesn't have the USB soldered.

I have the older model that is USB3.
With that I went to http://www.hackseagatesatellite.com and replaced the SeagateMedia firmware with this alternative.
I think I paid a bit of money but I've been running it for two years and I use the drive all the time.
No more need to use the buggy SeagateMedia app.

I can browse to it via SMB (I use it to play videos from Kodi on rPi). It also adds other network protocols into it.

The Wifi turning off when charging is annoying. I googled it a while ago and thought I saw something about it working if you use a charge only cable (so it doesn't think it's plugged into a PC USB port) but I haven't confirmed this.

I'm in a hurry so I'm sorry but I can't confirm the alternate firmware will work on the model in this post, but I think it does.
Please check before you commit if it's a deal breaker.

    • Firmware alternative for this model had a few comments in previous deal - mainly about expense, but adding features.

WiFi not working while charging was also discussed in that deal with suggestion like yours. (Won't be able to access data from WiFi & cable simultaneously.)
Unfortunately no confirmation that using ordinary USB charger allows WiFi to work. Pretty necessary for a streaming device.

  • got 1 from carindale yesterday. There was still 1 left
