What to Do with Missing Item/Mail?

Hello,
Long story short: I bought something from eBay and never received it. Seller claimed it's delivered based on the tracking number. I have tried dispute via both eBay and PayPal and both rejected my dispute based on the tracking number seller provided.
I also have tried to contact Aus Post a few times (online, phone call and local post office), they all gave me the same answer: nothing they could do because the mail didn't require signature even for Express mail.
I checked Aus Post website and found that compensation for lost mails may be claimed but it has to be done by the Seller. After the dispute I raised, I doubt seller would put in any effort to claim compensation. Let alone giving the compensation to me if the seller ever gets any from Aus Post.

This has never happened to me before, so I'm asking people for suggestion on anything that I can do now to find the missing mail back? Thanks in advance, especially to "forget it and move on."

  • check around your place, lazy postman might have tucked the parcel near front door or on the side.

    • Thanks. I have done that. My last suspicion is someone took it. :(

      • You can file a police report for something stolen from your property.

Open a case with the post. Not for compensation, just parcel not delivered.
If the Delivery guy has a few of cases open, then AU post might investigate.
If they investigate, he might get cold feet, and deliver the parcel.
Many "mights" but I think that's the only thing you can do.

    • Thank you!
When I called aus post, they told me immediately nothing they could do. They did not mention anything about opening a case for references. I called them 3 times.

I think you should forget it and move on.

    100% original advice

    • Thanks. I know I should forget it and move on and I will. Just in case people here have other solutions that may help. :)

Did you not see my username?

It is actually very unfortunate. What was the nature of the item that went missing?

  • Sorry to say, OP. But your parcel is gone, AusPost are beyond useless and will NOT give you any compensation regarding your missing item.

I had a $900 Phone went missing via their US service 'Shopmate'. They ONLY offered me $20 to compensate for the delivery cost.

AusPost has always been a Joke.

meanwhile Mr Ahmed enjoys 5.4m a year in salary

      • 5.6m actually. But that jerk resigned just weeks before a Senate scrutiny.

        I hope Karma gets him.

    • Thanks anyway.

I had a 60 dollar item not delivered and got compensated by Australia Post
They can't leave mail as safe drop at the front door of an apartment complex

Furthermore you can complain to the ombudsman about paypal and they will escalate it internally
if you can prove the item was not recieved and provide enough evidence to your claim (take photos of your complex etc)
Paypal can and will good will credit the item

Australia post do and will compensate but its usually only up to 50 dollars
you are probably better off performing a query through ombudsman to paypal
      they will resolve it

  • OP should complain directly to that $5.6M CEO

  • If you used a credit card you can charge back. If it's an Australian business you bought from then you can try to contact ACCC. May be they can help you.

    • Just curious, have you or anyone successfully claimed a charge back for things like this? Where if the bank asked the seller for proof of postage, the seller can provide one.

Otherwise, you might as well claim charge back whenever you need a new and free tv.

      • Thankfully I have never had to go for a charge back. But one of the reason for which the customer can request a charge back is if purchased item is not recieved. However I have not sure of the fine print of the terms and condition of the cc as this can vary.

  • Hi all,

To high jack the post a little, what do you feel someone living in an apartment complex with those flimsy mailboxes that you can pull letters out of (without unlocking) can do to avoid mail getting stolen (other than checking/collecting it daily).

I'm renting an apartment for the first time (usually houses). The mailboxes are not externally accessible (in complex behind key fob door), but as there is no camera, there is nothing to stop neighbours or random person who gains access stealing the mail.

    Any advice?

    Thanks

    • A lot of of my friends have PO boxes.
My ex-Supervisor got his eBay stuff sent to Office.
      All my mails are emailed….

The only thing I can suggest is rent a mailbox from Australia Post.

    • I haven't heard of renting an Auspost Mailbox. Do you know the associated costs, vs having a PO Box?

Does it cater for parcel deliveries, regardless of courier methods and within reasonable measurements?

      • +1

A small sized PO box is about 130 per year. Just asked.

      • +1

PO Box is around $125 per year (depend on location) and it will not accept courier delivery

  • If you used a credit card via paypal file a charge back.

    • Paypal rejected my dispute request on the same ground the tracking number meant everything!

      • I don't know what else you CAN do.. leave negative feedback and move on I guess…

      • Or just flap PayPal.

        Call your credit card company

  • I would query whether express post used by the seller meets the criteria for seller protection through PayPal. Express post never used to be covered by PayPal seller protection, only registered, as although there was a tracking number the actual delivery address couldn't be proven. I think there might have been some changes to the rule but definitely worth querying.

    • the actual delivery address couldn't be proven.

I think as long as the tracking shows it was delivered to ops post code/ suburb, it's sufficient proof of delivery (in PayPal's terms)
