Activate iPhone 3G without SIM - No Luck: (

Hi Guys,
Our office decided to give away couple of old iPhone 3G phones to employee kids for fun ( I know they are very old 3G model but they are spare and all kids aged between 7-10 years) . Seems they are locked to some carrier ( i m not sure but most likely OPTUS)

How can we activate them to use with Wifi. The things we tried to activate them

  1. Using any Optus SIM ( but error phone doesn't seem to associate with this carrier)
  2. Tried Factory Reset but error on iTunes after factory rest "We are sorry, we are unable to continue with your activation at this time". Tried different times , different computers
  3. Tried iphone hack of Pressing Power button by calling Emergency 112/999 number. No luck. Doesn't come with home screen. keep going to No Sim Card Installed screen

Any other suggestion. Has anyone done this before with old iPhone 3G

      They are very old phones. Apple doesn't help you for free.

    Get a few $2 sims from different carries and try your luck?

    You can try unlocking it from its network.
    I found this website that tells you where the phone was bought so you can check carrier. Just put the phone's IMEI into http://iphoneimei.info/
    Unlocking from carrier should be easy then just put any sim that supports 2G network and hopefully it will activate.
    I'm not sure if this will work but you can give it a shot.

    Used third party jailbreak to skip the activation.
