Cheap navigation option for P-Plater?

Hi I just got myself the first car and I'm on red P1, as we all know P platers can not use phone at all since last December.
Is there any cheap reliable navigation system out there that less than $150?

I use google maps on my Android (Samsung) phone
it has a driving mode which will put a shortcut on your phone called driving.

I use a magnetic phone holder on the dash so I can see the prompts but find the audio is clear enough for most times.

Can't use a phone at all on your Ps

NSW changed the law effective December 2016.
P-platers can no longer use their phones for ANY purpose, including as a navigation tool.
This applies to Green P as well.

      • Wow never knew that.

        • qld is the same, cant even use bluetooth handsfree.

  • Another question…since P platers can't use phone at all when driving and my car doesn't have a CD player, does that mean I will be stuck in crappy car radio big time?

I got a new Suzuki Swift eventually after careful consideration, thanks for your help Spackbace !

        • So it has a CD player then… And usb

        • @Spackbace: I will pick up the car tomorrow, just checked the specs again, it does come with a CD player which is good.
I know it has the USB, but if I connect my phone via USB to play music, would that make me breaking the law? Lol
I also found out some navigation system requires phone connection to use data updating real time traffic, that would make me breaking the law as well?! Since a certain function of the phone is used…

        • @Artofbargain:

Just fill a usb drive full of songs and leave it plugged in

If you want that function just connect it and chuck your phone in the glove box - they arent going to randomly go through your gps/ phone to see if there's a connection between the two lol

    • thats correct.

cant use the phone for music, can use it hands free with bluetooth, Cant use them at all.

  • Learn to navigate the stars. It's a lost art. Just don't drive to unknown places during the day

  • Take a mate with you.

  • I often try to memorise the way before I leave. 'Tis a good mental exercise. A few times I fail though and have to pull over and check the map again.

If you need to look up lots of addresses though you probably do need something easier.

  • Learn to read a street directory. Print out maps the night before. Ask some one every few turns? Take a friend. Buy a car with GPS. Buy a cheap GPS. Borrow a GPS. Steal a GPS….errr no, don't. Gumtree, freecycle, wanted ad, phone a friend. Once I used Google maps on a Tablet and saved the page, for when my 3 year out of date GPS maps were useless in a new area.
Or, buy a Tesla, self driving, comes with a super dooper GPS.
Time to keep up with the times sunshine.

  • Hi, Artofbargain. I am in the same position as you and currently looking for a budget GPS as well. I have noticed that TGG has Tom Tom's GPS for 15% off and i wonder if anyone can recommend us a good gps. Here is the website https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/tom-tom?utm_source=Experian&u…. Also may i ask, did you get the new swift?

    • any of the toms toms are good, buy the one in you price range.
