Does Anyone Here Go to NIB Dental Centre Sydney CBD?

I've been seeing a local dentist and it's costing me a fortune in out of pockets. Every six month check they seem to find something that needs doing, even if it is a simple filling top up. I don't know if it's because I have bad teeth or they are trying to rip me off. They show me X-rays and explain why, but how do I know what I'm seeing on X-rays?

I have NIB cover. With my current dentist I pay out of pocket for my check up and cleans. NIB dental centre doesn't charge for this.

Any experiences with the NIB centre? Is there any one in particular there that you would recommend?

Also, does anyone go to the NIB dental centre or the HCF for their free regular check up and cleans, but use another private dentist when work is needed?

I'm trying to balance cost with getting preventative work done, but somehow trying to make sure I'm not getting unnecessary work done that is doing more damage both to my teeth and my wallet!

  • NIB Dental Centre (and BUPA) is like your average GP. They focus on getting as many patients in and out as fast as possible.

If you are going for a routine checkup/clean they are OK. If you have serious teeth issues then you are better off going for one of the standalone practices which tend to provide better services.

    • I am not sure one can generalise based on health fund as it really comes down to the Dental practitioner rather than the practice itself. My partner is with "Bupa" and gets hers done at a local place to us (Not CBD). The Dentists there are great and certainly don't rush things. I have 40 year old amalgam fillings which they recommended in keeping, Point being, they are not out there to cash grab by replacing them.

To the OP: Get a second opinion if concerned and see what an alternate Dentist says. If both say you need a filling, then you know where you stand.

      • Problem is to get a second opinion for a filling etc you need to take your X-rays with you to the next dentist. I've asked for them in the past and the dentist gets all funny about it. If you go to the next dentist without X-rays they will get you to do another set. More costs and more exposure to X-ray radiation.

  • Go to NIB for your freebies and let them quote a cost for any additional work. Take the quote to your preferred dentist and get the job done there.

I have been there a few times around 10 years ago when i used to be with NIB. The last time I went there, the dentist took an xray of my wisdom teeth. He brought it back to the room. He literally looked at for 1 second and I saw this, and goes to me "all 4 wisdom teeth needs to come out". I didnt believe him so i went to a local dentist that my parents normally go to, he took an xray and said you only need 3 taken out as the 4th one will not give you any problems.

So i dont think much of the NIB Dental care and i will never go back there.

However, they might have changed since then.
