          @carwashhair:

There are 4 international airports, including Cairns Intenational Airport… (didn't see you were referring to just SEQ, not QLD)
All but BNE are basic facilities.

Gold Coast & probably all but Brisbane have no maintenance facilities for large aircraft (caused 24 hour delay on my Air Asia flight). That's a good reason to fly from a major airport, which is only BNE in QLD.

Jetstar moved many international flights from GC to Melbourne.

        • @Infidel:

how lucky you are living in SE Queensland

was not talking about Cairns, though. The four airports for SE QLD are BNE, OOL, MCY and Brisbane West. If Qantas flies there from Sydney it's gotta be a destination, right? http://www.wellcamp.com.au/

        • +1

          @carwashhair:
Yes 4 airports (3 international) in SEQ. But the new private Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport, Toowoomba - only operates a few international flights (couldnt find any - probably just to export Gina Rinehart's Wagyu beef). It's a fair drive & haven't seen a deal on OzBargain😯

The advantages of flying into the choice of SEQ airports for holidays or business - is very different for locals flying out from their generally suburban homes.

Getting public transport (other than taxi/uber or private coaches) at early/late flight times is near impossible unless you live in CBD to use Airtrain which has restricted or no service outside normal hours.

Sydney has neighbouring airports too with better transport connections. The advantage of larger population. OOL can be a bugger to get to from areas of Brisbane. I sometimes fly BNE-Newcastle because it's usually cheaper & had better connections than OOL-Sydney.

With so many airports, competition should make flights cheaper… But generally charged more for shorter flights - not the geographic advantage you claim. We miss out on many flight deals you get.

A case of the grass is always greener on the other side… sometimes it comes with cow pads😯

      • +1

If you can't take advantage of a geographical advantage for cheap travel, you probably deserve to stay at home.

Come off it. Over 100km to (all but BNE) airport IS a bit far for most people in Brisbane.

It takes 3 or 4 hour by public transport for me to get to OOL (2 buses, 2 trains, another 2 buses & hope none are late), & I'm closer than most beside good transport in South-East of Brisbane, near motorway to Gold Coast. My trips are too long (4-13 weeks) to justify leaving car at airport beside the ocean. I've done it many times over many years.

Add up to another few hours on public transport for others in Brisbane, unless near the few train lines (without some drivers at present).

For me, catching cheap AirAsia flights means an overnight stay before flight (done many times), unless taking much more expensive options - often from BNE airport or further to CBD involving Taxi etc. Being late for a discount flight is not an option.

In comparison, Bus to DFO beside BNE is 5 minutes walk from my home, is quick, & costs me under $2.

Leave the bargains for those that want to make them work.

Who doesn't want to make the bargains work? Seems Omayga was wanting this to work. If I could get a cheap flight out of BNE - I'd jump at that & have.

I think you're harsh in basically telling people to give up discount flights & stop complaining. To leave it only to the experienced!
It was just a simple question if flights were available from BNE. That was already answered - no.

I've travelled over a decade, up to 9 months a year, to & from overseas flying very cheap & even free. Sometimes the hassles getting to & from airports can be daunting & expensive for the inexperienced. It's the first & last step of the journey.

For me, flying to/from Sydney was so much easier, transport available most hours, & very cheap after a short stroll out of the airport & on to public transport. Much easier, quicker & cheaper than any airport near Brisbane. Don't know what you are upset about?

I'll be back at OOL for another cheap Jetstar flight to Japan in April. At least it is a better flight time than AirAsia. But not looking forward to the ride there - it's half the flight time to Japan😯

Flights to Ho Chi Minh City (South).

Photo shows Ha Long Bay (Far North).

That's equivalent to sticking a photo of the Sydney Opera House next to an Adelaide flight.

DO NOT go to Vietnam in August.
    You'll die from crotch rot

    • Been to Vietnam many times in August - sure it's hot, but no worse than an Australian summer…

      • It's much worse than any place in the southern half of Australia that is not oppressively humid and hot.

      • North Vietnam is quite different from the south.
        Like Cairns vs Sydney

  • It seems AirAsia doesn't operate between Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi.

I booked a trip to Ho Chi Minh for 7 days in Sep, i haven't been to Vietnam before and someone recommend i should go up to Hanoi as well. Will 7 days be enough? As i don't want a trip that is so packed or full then after the trip it feels worse than working 7 days straight. Also, this time i am taking my parents there, since they haven't been there before.

    • +2

Usually foreign airlines aren't allowed to serve a domestic sector unless it happens to be a stopover to the final destination. You can be sure VN Airlines wants to keep this sector.

Oh and 7 days will be too packed if you are trying to do both cities. You need one day just for Halong Bay.

      • +1

Jetstar Asia, Vietjet Air and Vietnam Airlines all fly between SGN and HAN and for really cheap too.

    • Definitely head north and mid coast. Hcmc was my least favourite destination in Vietnam.

      • +2

Asked a Vietnamese colleague about this deal and he said to only spend 2 days in HCMC…. nothing much to do and even he get's bored there after a day. He recommended to go to Nha Trang where Vin Pearl Island is (a theme park).

  • Looks like a saving of $30 per return ticket in September.

Is VN a cheap place to go to? Bali used to be cheap, now it's the same as elsewhere in Asia (e.g. Langkawi, Phuket).

Woah, a lot of the return flights involve an 8 hour wait (from around midnight) in KL. How much is it to sleep somewhere in the airport?

    • If you want to stay airside, Sama Sama 2 hotel will cost about $70-80 for 6 hours.

      • Just checked and it would be $137 for 2 adults as Sama Sama 2.

        • doh the total cost of this cheap trip is increasing significantly …

    • You can book some decent hotels around the airport maybe 15km away for around $15 when booked early. The short taxi ride is up to around $10 one way by web estimates. Perhaps even a bus route for ~$1.5 if not out of hours. Google maps is quick for checking public transport time and cost.

There's a couple of citibank atm's in the airport according to their locator. So cash for plus transaction accounts is no problem.

      • Sri Langit is 15 minutes away, and $77.

I wonder, after getting out of the airport (do you have to pay entry visa fee etc.?), how many hours actual sleep you would have before you had to get up and go back to the airport for the 2 hour check-in? 3 hours sleep?

  • +1

If I buy a ticket for myself and I can't go can someone else go with my tickets? Sorry don't travel much.

    • In theory yes, provided the airline let you change name - with a fee.

    • Usually not possible or significant fee to change name on these cheap tickets.

  • +3

visas have to be done in person at the consulate? aint nobody got time pho that

    • Search for Visa On Arrival threads on this site.

  • Just booked 2 weeks in September, OOL-SGN return for $299. Great price for school holidays!

  • So, can someone confirm that if you buy this and just have carry on luggage and forfeit the KL - SGN , will the return portion of the ticket still be ok to use from KL after not showing to the return SGN - KUL? A lot of airlines will cancel the remainder of the ticket in this instance.

    • I did that a few years ago with Airasia, there were no problems but I checked 1st.

This is the email reply: Dear xxx,Greetings from Airasia X. With regards to your email below, please be informed that you may only board one sector of the flight(emphasize "may', not "only", and then it makes sense). However as per our terms & conditions, there will be no refund for the sector that you did not board. To avoid any inconvenience, please check in at airport only.

So yes I "check(ed) in at airport only", not online. I had checked luggage so at Sydney checkin I explained and they put a KL tag on it, I think at the airport they may have cancelled the return HCM-KL leg which I wasn't going to use, can't quite remember. My ticket then was an Airasia "Fly-through" like this deal, but caveat it was a few years ago. Yes, A lot of airlines will cancel the remainder of the ticket in this instance…like Vietnam airlines I found.

  • can anyone confirm visa costs $95AUD ? Their Website looks sketch and says to call lol..

Will also search for VOA threads hoping to get some more info.

lava hot deal , thanks OP!!

    • +1

I recently paid $8usd for VOA letter and $25usd for the visa.

      • +1

thanks mate. where was that from?

just trying to get how that works, do you just get a letter here in aus from a service online, and then go to a special queue at the airport in HCM, and pay another 25USD and get a visa sticker label on your passport printed there?

        Cheers

        • +1

This is correct. I've never had to wait longer than 20 minutes for my VOA in SGN.

        • swt az , thanks for the info guys! much cheaper than applying beforehand for the visa then.

do they actually go off and print a visa sticker or just stamp the passport?

(just thinking wait-time wise cuz a bunch of us are thinking of grabbing this deal, and i know a couple people will defo have a hissy fit if waiting long lol)

        • @cartwheelz623: are you sure applying from sydney is expensive? i saw just $19 for single entry but cant remember the website name.

warning there are few fake websites:
          http://vietnamembassy.org.au/thu-tuc-cho-cong-dan-Viet-Nam-v…

        • @jackofspade: Just applied and got this reply:

Please fill out the the below requested information, we will use to obtain the visa authorization letter (approval) that will take 2- 3 days (normal), and 4 hours - 1 day (urgent). As soon as we got the "letter" from Vietnam Immigration Department, we will fax, or send you by email. What you need is to print the "letter" out, prepare 02 photos with size 4*6 cm each, and $45 per person (one month visa), ready to get Vietnam visa on arrival at Vietnam international airport when you arrive.

"45 per person (one month visa)"

Before applying it says "25 USD for 1 month or 3 month single entry visa"

help guys what is happening haha

        • +1

@cartwheelz623: Exactly as described. You have to pay these middle people for making the application for you and send you a copy of the approval. Then pay immigration for the visa stamp on arrival. Sure, it's a money collection exercise.

        • UPDATE: Got an email this arvo from them, with letter.

        • @jackofspade: you da real MVP

  • Is it still safe to travel with AirAsia?

  • If Air Asia says 3 sale flights only left, do you think that's true or if my friends book separate they'll also get the sale price?

    • +1

Nah, they only "sell" a few seats at a time to give you a sense of urgency. They may have a lot more or really almost run out. But you don't know. Hotel booking sites also do the same thing.

  • Seat selection $76 ($19 x 4 legs, quiet zone $29 x 4!)… or buy these https://www.bigw.com.au/product/sony-noise-cancelling-headph…

  • Guys, if you put 2 people book together, how to add just ONE of that $80 value pack? two of us just need one big luggage but when i click the value pack + button it adds two * $80 to the total.

    • Is it adding $80 for each separate leg of the trip?

      • No I feel it adds 80 for each passenger total $160 But I want just one person pay 80.

    • why not just buy 20kg luggage for $56 ( total $112 for the 4 legs)

  • Guys don't book the May 12th-19th. I'm taking my baby :')

    • +1

Don't forget to book a bassinet!

      • He'll be over 10kg by then unfortunately, thank you though! :)

  • f it… just booked us tix out of GC in May. OZB meetup at airport pre-boarding?

    thanks op!!

  • when booking, do you find that you select flights but cannot click "continue"?
Does this mean there aren't any seats available? Bit confusing as the actual flight time is still an option.

    • I think it's a browser issue, perhaps to do with pop ups. It did this on my laptop so I just booked on my phone.

    • Yeah happened to me with Chrome. Worked when I switched to Firefox. But when I came back later with Chrome it worked again. Maybe some Javascript didn't fully load.
