30+ inch monitor suggestions

Hi,

I'm looking for a monitor thats:
- 30 inch or above
- 21:9
- 3440 resolution
- ideal for gaming with PS4
- ideal for graphic design (color accuracy)
- Can be connected to new Macbook Pro (USB-C). I wont game with MBP though, so freesync etc is not required
- Goor value for money :) I don't care about the brand or design.

Thanks!!

For those specs you'll be getting a 34 inch monitor. The prices usually start at around $800 and go up from there. Curved is normally a bit more expensive.

I have no idea if the ps4 supports ultrawide monitors but most monitors have a dual input feature, so ps4 input side by side with a computer. That or you'll get black boxes on the sides.

Since you got the macbook you're already used to getting adaptors so best bet is to buy more to output to the monitor.

The main players are acer, LG, samsung and korean ebay monitors.
acer is generally gaming so better refresh rates (through Gsync and freesync) but have quality control issues. (Note pretty much all 34inch monitors have blacklight bleed isses)
LG slower refresh rates but improved QC with their more recent models. Better value for money.
    No idea about samsung.
Korean monitors. Cheapest of the bunch and possible to overclock to get better refresh rates. A bit risky with warranty and QC.

Recommendation: prob go with LG, although new models are coming out which means better tech and cheaper prices. 34UC88 has a curved screen and the 34UC98 is also curved and comes with thunderbolt.

  • I've got an LG 34UM95C-P I purchased from MSY last year for $865.27 (835 + shipping & handling) which was one of their daily deals.

It seems to tick your boxes with 3440x1440 resolution, IPS panel, 34 inch size, not sure about USB-C but I suspect if it doesn't have it there may be a similar variant with that. It doesn't have any of the fancier features that push the price up (curved screen, high refresh rate, g-sync).

While it takes a bit to get used to when switching from a regular-sized 16:9 monitor, I've found it to be a fantastic monitor that's great for regular use, work and gaming (although finding resolution fixes or workarounds can be a challenge for older titles (or sometimes newer titles, cough Fallout 4 cough), and you have to fiddle with the FOV settings).

I just hooked it up to my PS4 and had a look at a couple of titles (Fallout 4, Dark Souls II). Using the whole screen makes it look stretched (although not unbearably so) because of course the PS4 can't output over 1080p and there's not FOV settings. If this isn't your cup of tea you can easily switch the picture mode and just use the middle of the monitor as a 27 inch 2560×1440 screen. It also has inbuilt speakers which aren't awful.

    • 3440 resolution
    • ideal for gaming with PS4

    PS4 is 1080p, so you've got a problem here.

Then if you value color accuracy you're going to be getting something expensive that's factory calibrated, and/or calibrating a good quality one yourself. You're looking at $1200+.

  • Or should I just get a 4k TV?

  • Turns out some tvs that support croma 4:4:4 can be good monitors. Sony 850d is the best but not available in Australia?
