Private Health Cover - Dental Crown

Hi All,

I need to get a dental crown. I do not have pricate health insurance. Currently GMHBA offers private health cover with all waiting periods for extras waived (if taken out combined cover).

Could I take out the insurance, get the dental treatment done, then claim and cancel insurance?

Dental Crown is considered major dental and carry up to 12 mths waiting period.

Doubt they will waive that. They may waive only 2 and 6 months but not 12 months.

Also on the other hand, if you do what you said you would and even if they do allow that, the premium you paid probably more than the rebate you may (and that's a big MAY) get back.

  • This are the conditions:

NO WAITING PERIODS ON ANY EXTRAS WHEN JOINING ON COMBINED COVERS*
*For new members on direct debit, must pay first month. Annual limits and sub limits apply.

It sounds like they waive all extras waiting periods.

I am aware that they would not cover all, there are sub limits. In my case $450.00 on dental crown. Would still save me a few hundred Dollars. Premium would be $170 per month.

    • i doubt becase crown is consider as major as the above first poster, but you can always call and ask them. things like this, calling is much faster and more accurate than posting on ozb

  • Thanks guys,

Will give them a call tomorrow. However for me "NO WAITING PERIODS ON ANY EXTRAS" sounds like all extras.

Hard to believe, but I agree with your interpretation - "No waiting periods on any extras" reads exactly like all extras services are covered. I haven't seen this before as normally health funds only wave the 2 & 6 month waiting period! As suggested by others, join, get the work done, claim what you can and cancel! About time we can make health insurance work in our favour for once!

  • I'm guessing a most insurances wont pay, since it's a pre-existing condition.

How much does a crown actually cost? $1500 according to google. Looking at the GMHBA website, a top extras policy will cost $989/year and the maximum benefit is $600 for a crown. You could theoretically cancel after 1 month, ie claim a $600 benefit and only pay $82 in premiums …

Waste of time calling them up. You'll probably get caught up in insurance fraud related issues, if you try to claim anyway.

  • Insurance companies are in the business of making money, not giving out.. See how you go, though I am sure they will most likely have multiple clauses (excuses) as to why it won't be covered. More than likely by linking it back to being a pre-existing condition. Good luck.

  • Pre-existing condition clause is only for hospital treatment.

  • Joined, will report back

    • So, how'd you go?

        It worked

        • So I could go get my teeth checked out. Then if I need anything serious(expensive) do the same as you??

        • @subywagon: Not anymore, this was only a short time offer. I have not seen this before that they waive all waiting times.

@Franconian: I think it says it now on the website on the second slide.

        • @subywagon: You are right. Its back! Get the cheapest hospital cover with highest excess (the excess is only for the hospital cover…) and best Extras cover to your needs.
