NBN FTTP recommendations for WA metro?

Hi all,

Have FTTP connection in new estate. Currently with Optus on FTTP 25/5, but found their speed to be horrendous (2-4Mbps down) during night peak times, so thinking of getting out of contract with the help of TIO

I mainly stream a lot series & movies from my chinese TV box, so quota of above 500gb is definitely needed, and preferably more importantly one with good speed to chinese servers. Download speed is all I care for, don't do online gaming etc, so latency don't bother me much. 25/5 is usually enough for me on optimum speed, so probably no need to go to 100/40. My budget is no more than $90/month

Telstra probably no. 1 on international speed, but not confident enough to lock in for 24 months, so thinking to try the smaller guys for month to month contract first, and see how it goes. Also is Telstra's network saturated like Optus now?

Appreciate your input! Thanks!

Are you confusing megabits and megabytes? Optus sells a 25 Megabit connection = 3.125Megabytes/sec.

Doesn't seem so bad if you're getting 2 Megabytes/sec in peak times.

I mainly stream a lot series & movies from my chinese TV box

I doubt they're streaming in 1080p or 4k, so 2MB/s should be more than enough.

    • Actually they're streaming at 1080p for most VOD stuff, so yea it's shit…It's embarrassing our NBN speed here, almost as bad as ADSL

    • Ok I might have got the unit wrong, but the speed lag is real..

I get 20+ Mbps during non peak time, but 3-5 Mbps during peak times to servers over east…so yes that's only quarter of what I'm expecting

  • SkyMesh seem to be Whirlpools favourite. They' deal directly with NBN, so they can chase up any issues & complain for you, if it's a fault on NBN's side. No lock in contract either, I'd just go with 25/5 if you're primarily just streaming. They have 1TB for $80, they also give another 1TB off-peak. https://www.skymesh.net.au/services/nbn/fibre/plans.php

The Telstra network for now is still reliable and not saturated like Optus.

The problem with Telstra is that they're the most expensive, they sell gimped equipment for the customer to not use and they target newbs/stupids with added extras that cost even more that you can get for nothing if you ask.

Dont know if this is avalible near you but might be worth looking into

    • Not sure I'll like it, it's too cheap to be reliable…For me realible speed at all times is more important, I'd rather not pay for peanuts since I already paid $300 top get NBN connected..

      • Completely up to you but even if they deliver 25% of there speed its still cheaper then skymesh

    • Would definitely like to see some speed test result here from FTTP users first…it's just too good to be true, I meant how they even gonna pay for their own bills charging peanuts…Just doesn't work in economic sense

  • i get good speeds with my TPG 25/2. My wifi speedtest results are about 22mbps, dont seem to note any down time.

  • I have been with Internode since 2009 & I'll never switch unless they go out of business (owned by TPG).

As of now, they are still run out of SA.

When you ring, you are speaking to someone on AU surf.

    FYI

    • Anyone who has anything to do with Tpg, I'll stay away sorry.. Iinet has gone down hill so much since takeover

      • I understand. All I can report is my own experience. So far, they are running as per before their mutli-takeovers (been quite a long time now).

If they fold them into TPG, etc, I'm sure they KNOW that every one will go Telstra. If the service falls to the same level, why bother staying?

        Good luck in your search.

If you want to know which property has NBN / Use must download NBN M8 Chrome Extension , it will add a tick or a cross on Realestate.com.au when you are searching for a new property. That way you can get one with NBN.

    • uh…I know I have NBN, I'm asking which NBN provider, not if I got it or not….duh…

  • Any way I could check if an ISP has its own backhaul in my CSA? In particular Kelmscott 2 CSA?

  • Any update on this topic?
