I'm fast running out of space on my 24TB unRAID server so I have been looking at both the 8 and 10TB Seagate Ironwolf NAS drives. This might be the cheapest price ever for both drives. Both drives work out to be approx 5c/GB. The 8TB is slightly better value per GB but please note it is currently on back order.

Also depending on your location you may wish to consider buying the 8TB locally for a little bit more. If your in Brisbane MegaBuy would be the sensible option for only $424.90 pickup but the $41.95 delivery fee total kills it for me

On Staticice
8TB - 435
10TB - 618

3.5" Form Factor
SATA III 6 Gb/s Interface
256MB Cache
7200 rpm
Up to 210 MB/s Data Transfer Rate

    10TB

    redonkulus

I still remember my dad buying an IBM XT for ~$14,000 with a daisy wheel printer, 20mb HDD, monochrome screen, steel keyboard (I still have it and it weighs about 3kgs) .

    20 mb HDD

    • Yeah it is insane. I remember when XP had a 2TB limit. I incorrectly removed the 10TB link as thought it was cheaper else where but misread the price. About to revert it back

Did this computer come packaged in a complementary car :O

        XT - mid 1980's, the original PC. with a 8068 mother board. i.e. 86 —>286—> 386 —> 486 —> pentium

      14k?? is that inflation adjusted??
(I mean, you could get an ok house for that back then)

my first pc was that same year, 1983, sharp mz 700.
my memory was it cost about $1000.. 0mb hdd tho.
had to load OS via cassette tape with every start.

      yeah it's crazy..
according to wiki one gigaflop cost 8.3trillion usd (inflation adjusted) in 1961, as of 2015 it was 8 cents

so out of interest, how did you run out of space on 24tb?

i have a large collection of 1080p and 2160p rips but still doing ok on a 2x 4tb drives

          @teardrops21:

HAHA. I like your thinking. I'm from Adelaide. I'm more concerned with the power dying

    • yeah maybe it would be handy for archiving many versions of files..
could definitely be handy for filmmakers.. as I think a feature film at full 4k raw, with all outtakes etc, would use nearly all of 24gb.

but for my use I'd prefer fewer mb's and more drives for raid

    • Size Used Avail
      73T 50T 23T

    • Data whoring. At some point when you stop deleting files and have an assortment of backups of devices (this is a very big factor!), you start to burn through terabytes.

    • Mostly it is a massive Plex server. Over 120 TV series and most of them come from 1080p Bluray rips. Do I need this much space? Probably not but find it too hard to delete

Also use it to store my Steam games, personal cloud, MusicBrainz mirror and will be doing some PC virtualisation in the future when I upgrade the board and CPU

    "I have a large….." then I saw that she was laughing :)

Can easily see 24TB being used up.

The 8tb one was aud499 on Ebay - futu_online store and with 20% discount almost every month it can be obtained for aud400. Everyone knows the advantages of buying local. If not in hurry to get one then I say wait for the Ebay deal. If memory serves the 10tb was around 600 after discount - so still expensive.

    8tb: http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Seagate-IronWolf-8TB-3-5-SATA-Inter…

    • sounds like a good deal for the 8TB drive

    • What are the advantages of buying local? It's not like the bay store is going to RMA it for you.

Are we trusting Nevabuy with our money again?

  • I bought the 10TB one from B&H for US 399 last week. They had a sale. I guess I should have ozbargained it, I didn't know it was that cheap.

    • shipping costs?

Amazon.de have better price on both 8TB and 10TB. Considering buying myself.

    https://www.amazon.de/Seagate-IronWolf-ST8000VN0022-interne-…

    8TB EUR 259.34 delivered (~AUD 360)
    10TB EUR 370.42 delivered (~AUD 513)

It will say on the product page that they don't ship to Australia, but if you follow through to the payment page it will certainly allow you to proceed. Just trying to decide how many to get. Got 2 spare bays in my NAS which only has 3TB drives in it at the moment, so it's quite a step up!

    • Check your NAS's specs to make sure these don't blow your total GB limit.

      • What sort of NAS has a total GB limit these days? Most people use a white box solution.

      • Synology 1513+

Got SHR setup and it will take up to 10TB drives on current firmware

    • That's awesome. I did check US and UK before listed but not Germany, Will mark this as expired as the other one is significantly better. I have added a new deal as no one else has. Wish I knew how to tag users to show my appreciation

  • Now that I use exodus I can't imagine needing this much space.

Have you considered buying a 16TB MyBook Duo and shucking the drives from it? It uses genuine WD Red 8TB.

~700 AUD for 16TB is likely the best value.

    • That is actually a pretty good suggestion :)

      • It's currently a very popular method for datahorders. If you need to warranty a drive people are apparently just throwing them back into the enclosure and away you go.

        • I have had success RMAing WD external disks by saying "I removed it from the enclosure to attempt data recovery via SATA".
