Things to Lookout For When Selling a Car on Gumtree

Hi All,

Tried googling the topic but didnt get much help.

So the story is that I got this Pulsar 2013 Sedan Full service history (Ex Government Car) pickles last week. Its good and I want to sell this after few months. Am not in hurry and want a reasonable price covering my costs. The tips I got from a few portals were:

1) Keep the price a little (1-1.5K) above my selling price as people will always negotiate.
2) Mention clearly that price is slightly negotiable and dont entertain any negotiation queries unless some one is serious enough to come and inspect the car.

My Questions are around:
1) Test driving car: I think I should note down the licence number of the testing driver. What happens if there is a crash ? I presume the licence will help me with the claim process with my insurance company (I have comprehensive insurance). Am I missing anything here? Should I be careful about something else ?
2) Payment process: I think I should take a token amount $100-$200 in case someone is serious enough in buying the car, while they arrange for finances. And I should wait for the whole amount to come in my bank account before going to service tasmania for transferring the car ? Am I missing anything else here ?

Anything else am I missing ?

Thanks again.

Regards

Licence - ask to take a photo of their licence. Thus ensures they have it and you've sighted it. Tell them you'll erase the photos in front if them afterwards, and then do that.

You will get so many lowballers. Learn to ignore

    • Remember to keep the name (and time of test drive) post-deletion as you can always pick up speeding fines in the mail a few weeks later.

Don't sell it to anyone that happens to be working on an oil rig, wants to pay by paypal, and wants to send a courier to pick up the car.

  • Thanks guys. What about payment process ? Any helpful tips there?

    Thanks

Hello. I am working off-shore at the moment and your car is perfect for my son as a birthday present. He is in the Northern Territory and I want to surprise him for his birthday.

I will pay your asking price + $500 and all fees to transport the car to his location.

Please contact me by email only as I do not have a phone at this remote location. I will then organise a courier and payment.

  • I make it known that I will be in the car with them on a test drive. Dont like my terms then dont buy.
This i find filters most of the tyre kickers.

  • Double check your insurance policy regarding test drives. Make sure it covers additional drivers as required. I know my budget direct only cover listed drivers, but NRMA covers anyone. Also make sure you have some sort of collateral, keep their licence, or make sure they leave another car at your place as I believe most insurance policies wont cover theft of the vehicle if you willingly hand over the keys. Fortunately most people are honest though and can drive well enough not to crash on a test drive, you might prefer to ride along though but make it known up front.

Consider noting the times the vehicle will be available for a test drive in your ad if you have limited time available.

Don't worry about mentioning the price is a bit negotiable, people will interpret that differently and you will still get low ballers. Pretty much everyone expects that a car price will be a bit negotiable.

Try to be as accurate and honest as you can in the ad with plenty of detail. You wont waste your time with people ringing up to ask basic questions. Take decent photos. Don't bother tagging every single brand of car in your ad either just to get views. It annoys me a lot if I'm looking for a Valiant and I get a crapped out hatchback, or fully sick commodore in my search.

    • Thanks that was a nice read. Will base my advert accordingly. I still need opinion on payment options. I presume no chnage of ownership till I have last cent in my account or may be cash.

      • Yup. No transfer til all paid up. It's been easy when I've sold on gumtree, the amount of cash wasn't too much. Not sure I'd be keen to to accept much more than $10k in cash

        • Noted. Thanks
