I bought one of these in the last Ozbargain post - it's good! Spend another couple of dollars to put the Aussie cable on the base station and it looks like the local one. Biggest downside of it is its appearance. I ended up yelling at my mate's kid, who thought it was a set of scales and was standing on it! Very lucky it survived that as he started it up with his foot (thinking it was the tare button for the scale). I got him off it before it started moving…

    • I'm disappointed that they didn't include radio wave sensors.
A small inclusion to solve the base station return problems.

      • +14

I am disappointed it didn't suck the "kid" up

  • Ah gee makes me want to upgrade.

  • Has anyone paid up for one of these toys and used in successfully and regularly .. come on, be honest .. :-) .. !!

    • +5

I have one of the originals and still using mine now, 4 years on - just had to replace the batteries

    • +1

Yep. Manual vacuuming is for idiots.

      • +9

        or their wives .. :-) .. !!

        • the wives are smart, they are not idiots!

[@lnq](/co Err, who said they were .. ??

    • sooner or later these robot will replace your jobs!

    • +1

I have a Samsung robovac and use it every few days. Works great and doesn't freak the cat out like the full vac. House is much cleaner now compared to when I could be bothered manually vacuuming before.

    • yep, got a Roomba 530, has been running every day or 2 (on average) for over 2 years now.
Upgraded the battery and brush system last year, still very happy, although in retrospect I think the Neato is more efficient (Roomba is very dumb/random motion, plus less suction).

I'm tempted, if I hadn't upgraded Roomba last year I'd probably jump on this…..can I justify having 2 going simultaneously …hmmm

    • Had one for a few years. They actually work well, and the amount of dust it picks up never ceases to amaze and disgust me. Can be a pain to prep the environment to make sure it won't break or get stuck on anything, but at the same time, it does encourage us to keep things tidy. Only complaint is mine doesn't have an edge brush, which makes this model a tempting upgrade.

    • Been using my Neato-XV21 for about 5 years now. Battery died though and had to change them but otherwise fantastic.

    • I have this Botvac Connected, and it's a bit of a disappointment to be honest. It's pretty dumb, and will get stuck on on my rug, in between chair legs, and the round base of barstools. This means that I rarely actually run this vacuum when I'm not home (which is what I had hoped to achieve), as I have to help it after getting stuck a few times. If you have no rugs and no furniture with a round base, it works quite well.

      • +1

If you're talking about these chrome curved bases that are on nearly every swivel stool out there, I know your frustration..

The curve and reflectivity means none of the sensors can detect it, and its a smooth enough curve that the bot can ride up it, and keep trying and trying..

        • Hahaha exactly the one, only to make it worse, I have this table http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40063632/

        • @tightshang:

My barstools are pretty worn out, been looking for something we like without those bases, and isn't ridiculously priced (Not that easy a task it seems).

As much as I like to think replacing them is the last obstacle to scheduled cleaning, it's probably unlikely anyway what with all the lego etc the kids leave lying around. At least I won't have to move or flip the stools upside down when we clean though.

But a good warning to anyone else with them, the Neato's don't like them.

      • +1

Just as a quick comparison I have the Xiaomi robot vac - it also can't detect the round base of the bar stools, but unless I have 2 basically touching it will ride up/down a few times then move on. It also doesn't get stuck in between chair legs (and I can see in the map of where it cleaned that it did in fact go through them, detect the legs and circle around them to clean as much as possible), and while I have no rugs I do have rather plush bath mats, which again it has no issues with. Works perfectly fine leaving it to run on its own, and will only occasionally issue a stop work warning for something like a full bin, or tangled main brush (and half the time just telling it to keep going via the app works and I come home to a nice clean house).

    • I bought an irobot from one of the deals a week or so back and so far it seems pretty good. It will zip around for about 3 hours before recharging and gets into places I can't get with the Kirby.

    • I started with an XV-21, upgraded to the botvac 80 (similiar to the model in this deal).

As long as you are able to easily maintain good 'floor discipline' (keeping small items off floor, wet patches in bathrooms etc) these things are bloody fantastic. I run mine 2-3 times a week. Some kinds of furniture upset it, such as those '5 spoked' office chair legs or anything with a ramped base like stools. Shaggy or thick rugs will be a problem too. Occasionally it will work its way between kitchen table legs and become stuck.

You still get a bit of buildup of dust in corners etc, so you still need to hand vaccuum every now and then. Once you 'neato proof' your house, you rarely have any issues. It's a great feeling to come home and find those orderly neato tracks across your rug knowing it is one less thing to do.

    • Yep, we keep our upper level clean with one of these. Use it several times a week.

I have had some problems with it staying connected to the WiFi at home, though.

  • Just increased in price by 10%

Not worth the money, my wife vacuums for free

    • +26

you forget the overheads that goes with that.

  • We used to use our original unit on timber floors.

Doesnt seem so good on carpet though.

    • Was that with a blade brush or combo brush? I found my XV-11 did a much better job on carpet once I got the combo brush for it.

  • +1

Had Battery Issue 002 with both my XV21 units after 12 months.
I purchased new Neato batteries but still didn't work.
Called customer support and they basically said to buy a new one :(
Won't be buying a Neato again.

    • You obviously didn't purchase from Aust retailer?

      • Amazon US. Why? It is actually been more than 2 years now.

        • If Australia, Australian consumer warranty would apply, when its out of manufacture warranty, its not actually out off warranty.

        • Not sure what the warranty period is on these units however I would strongly suggest you have a chat with Amazon CS.

I've always had positive dealings with them any time something broke down during warranty periods and them issuing credits or refunds without any hassles. Just plead your case to them, and if it is still under warranty I'd be surprised if they didn't at least give you a solution to your battery issues.

If they ask you to send the item back, ask them to refund your postage costs, I've done it on two occasions now. Most recently I was shocked at a significant price drop of an item I purchased for a friend back in Dec, which I paid $750USD for - it is now $499USD - Amazon CS actually asked me to send the item back, postage paid and I would get a full refund and then to go ahead and purchase the item at the current price. I politely declined only because the item was a gift. Rep then provided me with a small goodwill gesture amount of $50USD. In the many years I have been shopping on Amazon and have spent easily over 5 figures I've only had to return 2 items and each time they've been fantastic and that in itself is the reason why I have so much confidence when purchasing from Amazon.

    • Not 100% sure but looks like a lot a failures are due to cheap motor used in lidar.
Some people said it can be replaced.

    • Had the same problem and they were totally useless. Thing worked well, but the battery went to crap after 14 months and the electric motor that spins the radar. No help whatsoever from Neato. Tried to source parts aftermarket and youtube video ho to DIY, but it just didn't work the same. Not buying again. Waiting for a RoboVac to go on special.

      • Where did you go to buy the aftermarket parts?
I've got two Neato that has battery issues :-(

        • AliExpress or Amazon I think. I've thrown mine away now though.

  • I bought one of these during the last sale, and it was unable to charge the battery. It would detect that the battery was low, but then give up on charging after a while and the battery would never get charged.
It ended up costing me $160 to send it back to Amazon UK, and they ended up reimbursing me for about $80 of that.

I'm tempted to get another one though as statistics should be on my side right?

  • Got 1. Been looking for a while.

  • I had VX21. And it was awesome.
I upgraded to Botvac D series. And I am kinda disappointed.
It looks like they tried to cover more are by increasing the speed. So it looks like Botvac runs faster.
    And it means:
    1. Clean quality is not as good as XV21 - it leaves some particles behind and not picking up fine dust like XV21 was doing.
    2. Sometimes it goes over magnetic barrier, sometimes is pushes the barrier.

    • Agree 100%. All of the above is true for botvac. Got xV21 and returned it to get a botvac.. very appointed . Will happily but another xV21..

Botvac is a clear case of marketing reigning over logic..

  • is this 240 volts model?

    • +1

Universal power supply. Can just change power cord (clover type, like laptops, if anything like the XV series)

      • thanks mate. just bought one :)

Just pulled the trigger. GBP376.64 came to $636.09 for me.

    • That's with Amazon's currency converter hey? Usually get a better rate letting your credit card do the conversion (especially with something like 28 Degrees)

      • Ah, I just cancelled me 28 degrees card. ANZ's conversion was about $13 more expensive than Amazon's.

  • a complete rip-off.

Xiaomi Vacuum is much smarter and reliable and you can get it for $450 delivered

    • -1

Reliable in what sense? It's only been out for a few months. Smarter in what sense?

      • Reliability: I've been using it for 4 months and I own 2 copies of that. One running on upstairs and one on ground floor. The one on upstairs has been running flawlessly for nearly 4 months without any human intervention (ofcoz you need to clean the dust box), unless you throw your undies/socks on its. If that happens, you get a notification on your mobile. Happened about couple of times.

The downstairs is proven to be abit more difficult for it. The reason was the space I place it is way way way too shallow. The little corner barely fits the robot. As a result, Xiaomi occasionally get disoriented when trying to squeeze inward/outward. I'm trying to find a better spot for it.

Smarter: the robot has edge detection sensor. The upstairs' one would never walk down. And its path planning is very clever and the map it draws is very accurate. I know the neato also has virtual mapping but i dont know how well it performs. I dont think Xiaomi would lag behind that. It's as clever as a human can be.

        • It's fantastic your devices are running well and I hope they continue to, I just wouldn't make a reliability assessment based on two devices after four months.

Smarter…not so sure either. They seem to work the same way, that's why I ask how it's smarter, and it's more of you make the claim without knowing Neatos performance.

Don't get me wrong, if it's just a Neato clone and it's cheaper, then that's great. I have an XV-21 and would love to try a Xiao Mi, so don't think I'm a naysayer, I'm just wary of your reliability and intelligence claims and was wondering if there were some features I was unaware of.

        • @bxpressiv: the stair detection is a killer feature if you want to use it on upstairs

        • +2

Can't deny it is cheaper, though not sure it's fair to say it's better. They seem very similar to me. Xiaomi do make decent products though.

As far as I know Neato was the first to release a robovac with laser mapping, back in 2010, so you'd think they'd have a pretty good handle on it by now. The Neato's also have wall sensors, cliff detection and bump sensors in addition to laser mapping.

All that said, Xiaomi is definitely what I consider the first real contender against the Neatos for features and price.

    • Smarter in what sense?

      • +1

        see above

  • Looks like a good place to hide some ricin.

  • I've had a botvac connected for over a year now that I imported from the US. Love it. Runs most days of the week and we barely ever have to vaccuum anymore. We have a dog and a cat that both shed a lot and the neato isn't phased at all. Can highly recommend it.

  • will this work for a labrador sheding hair? i basically have to vacume every second day and it picks up around a full canister of the dyson v6 cordless full of hair and other stuff,…. would this be suitable replacement to do it at night or when im not home and at work? i wona do the whole house not just one room either.

    • 90% of the time I run mine when I am at work, you can set it to a schedule (time of day, days per week). The combo brush in these units is supposed to be great for pet hair, although I don't have a pet myself so can't comment. It certainly picks up all the human hair around the place no worries!

  • +3

I'm sorry, I needed to comment here as I believe I have the most experience with the Neato Botvac Connected devices.

Since September, I am on my 3rd device running in a crisp clean house.

Yes the motor in the laser device is a cheap motor and in this hot climate, it is useless and burns up.
Also, if one speck of dust gets on to that laser, underneath the laser unit, it will display the error my vision is blocked and you will need to strip it down, takes 1 hour.

Whatever you do, If you live in Australia, do not purchase this device from a none Australian retailer.

Unless the store is on this list, forget about support, warranty claims and swap outs.

A can of compressed air will remove that "one speck of dust".

  • Awesome. Just pulled the plug.

I plan on integrating this with Samsung SmarthThings and Google Home.

    • How would you integrate this with Google Home?

      • I think at the moment can only do it with Smartthings in between.

  • I also bought one of these during the last OzBargain post and it's beaten my expectations.

The latest update added maps from each run and the Neato Developer Network sounds promising for further enhancements!

    • I made the same mistake of updating mine, when I did I received lots more errors in regards to the device getting stuck.
Until I watch that video on youtube of a woman who had done the same thing, then I released it was a global thing.

6 weeks after me updating thats when mine give up. Good luck

      • +2

Well I've had nothing but a great experience since I bought my neato over a year ago Karlos. I believe you that you've had issues but definitely don't assume that's the same for everyone. And I live in Darwin, where trust me it's damn hot and my neato is not running around in aircon when I'm out of the house. Hasn't skipped a beat and the new update applied fine for me first try.

      • As in it says it gets stuck when it hasn't or it gets stuck more often?

Thanks for the warning though. I guess next update I'll hold off for a week or two.

        • I read a few comments on robotreviews saying the 2.2.0 update made the botvac more aggressive in its navigation, leading it to get stuck more often trying into get to places it shouldn't.

Probably a good idea to at least run on 2.0 for a bit first and see how it behaves so you can compare it. 2.2.0 is needed for the coverage maps though.

Anyway, there is a method provided to revert back to 2.0 there as well.

  • Is there a power cable i can buy to replace EU plug? I don't like using a converter since it's bulky and sometimes the cheap ones are loose.

  • Alot of mixed reviews reading the comments above. Just to clarify, if there are issues with the unit, do I need to send it back to Amazon UK or is there some sort of Australian based support?

  • +1

I've had 3 generations of Neato over 30 months: the BotVac 80, the D85 and the Connected. I found the old 80 series to be more reliable in covering the area. All generations are predictable. I don't use the wifi feature yet and I tried the eco setting but prefer the (original) boost mode. The only real problem I've had with the 80 series was the bumper was stuck and it always thought it was being blocked. Easy fix was to remove bumper and bend the plastic tab, 1 minute job. Only maintenance other than the usual dust bin is cleaning the brushes and using some cotton to wipe the drop sensors.
Unlike Karlos' unfortunate problem, I've had no laser issues with any of my models (and I definitely don't have a crisp clean house). The BotVac 80 was most reliable. The Connected appears to have improved the proximity to the wall and its cornering which is good but for some reason I feel it's not picking up as much as the old version. YMMV depending on your room/furniture/flooring.

  • Just got one, thanks! :-)

  • Excuse my ignorance but how can I purchase one of these when there is no AU shipping available….

    • +1

If it won't ship to Australia then it's probably a listing from another seller, not Amazon themselves.
Seems Amazon is out of stock now, as it now says "Usually dispatched within 2 to 5 weeks"

I was still able to place an order despite the 2 week dispatch delay. @rman please make sure that the seller is Amazon UK

        • Landed in Melbourne at 11am.. Delivery tomorrow.

How is it that a letter from the next suburb over takes a week, yet, a 10kg vacuum cleaner from the UK gets here quicker.

        • @Vladdo:

Well in fairness it was like 43 pounds for shipping…

But I'm sure we can all agree Auspost does seem to be unnecessarily slow. Probably to justify their priority class now.
But you know, 5.6 million and all that…

  • So buying one because it finally came in BLACK.

  • I call my white botvac Dorothy. She vacuums the house really well, except shaggy carpet.

She has eaten about 10 usb cables because wife and children leave them laying about.

Run her 6 days a week.

  • Does it requires voltage converter?

Just FYI, UPS doesn't show the final leg carrier in their tracking, but for me was PEP Transport (not sure about the rest of Aus).. Same connote number tracks on their site if your waiting.

  • Thought I would give everyone an update.

My Neato Botvac Connected failed yesterday, this was the fourth and last one.

Little did I know that the Neato Botvac Connected have technology that is three years old inside the device, but the marketing departments advertise them as the new latest device.

Short story is, the motor that controls the Lidar fails which displays error code 3000. This motor is the same motor as what controls the RPM is a desktop cd player.

    Neato Support was absolutely diabolical.

I now have a Roomba 980 Australia, I cannot believe how good the app is and how everything integrates.

Hit me up if you have any questions or comments, you will love this product at first but I will guarantee when you start receiving that error message my vision is blocked 3000, thats when it starts to go down hill.
