Anyone Else Missing Masters? (Now That They're Gone?)

So I've been researching for a new lawn mower / grass trimmer and I really miss the masters for eBay 20% off sales.

1) Anyone else missing masters?
2) Any predictions on will fill this ozBargain gap?

Yes, I miss them. It's certainly worrying that Bunnings has no real competition.

Not that I bought a lot from them when I had the chance though, they weren't always cheapest and didn't always have as much range, so I went to the Bunnings which was a bit closer.

home hardware, dogalogue is out now

  • Do not miss them at all, they had terrible staff, pretty bad products and stock they had always ran out of the popular lines. Now I just go to Mitre 10 or Bunnings after pricing them both up. Find myself buying online for most of my projects I plan in advance, then nip to one of these if I need something last minute.

I did like when my local opened and they handed out vouchers to use on the next shop. I think there was a 30% off voucher and used it to buy a Weber Q and another to buy some outdoor furniture. THey were pretty good bargains.

Do not miss them. I went once to get some gardening items and the girl I asked for assistance just kept going on about keeping mice out of the horse stables.

I miss it in that using the WishGift cards was quite convenient.

navigating their bizarre and illogical layout i do not miss,

my local store the breathing masks were at the absolute opposite end of the store from the painting and sanding.

then the masking tape was somewhere else again.
you'd navigate 100 meters to paint and sand a wall.

Bunnings and Mitre 10 seem to know how to paint
they always place a couple quick choices one cheap, one premium related items in each category to get job done (electrical gardening painting etc. isles all contain basic tools and safety gear ).

  • I certainly do miss Masters.

  • NOt missing.
    im bunning person.
bunning staffs are know what they are selling, just with they hire more staffs

do they speak your language at bunning?

  • +1

    1) yes, just becoz i like a bit more variety (like going to coles and woolies).
    2) maybe another new entrant to hardware space might fill the gap, bunnings i doubt as they currently pretty much have monopoly.

No more price wars to get a 4 burners hooded bbq for $119. Waiting for one like that…

  • I don't miss Masters as they never built a store here, probably hard to compete with the Bunnings Superstore here.

I bought one thing from Masters in their time and was charged shit loads for shipping for something that should only cost 1/10th.

    • Yet you still bought it?

      • I did not, I cannot edit my post now.

I am. I liked that it gave me the option to look at different brands and offerings before making a decision. Nicer stores and less-crowded, too.

    • +2

Yea - exactly my thinking - brands like EGO aren't stocked by bunnings so a bit harder to source now

Think its a shame that they went under - (though i never appreciated them in the first place…

I loved Masters. Miss it a lot.

I do miss them. Despite what some said, the store I went to provided great service. Not only that, chatting with a chap there once, their store was well-run, motivated, with good management and profitable. Yet, it had to follow the rest of the group and close down.

Having said that, I remember in the early days, the prices were more expensive than Bunnings. And only with discount vouchers (from Woolworths etc), that their price were similar with Bunnings. So this was probably the main reason deterring people from going there.

When they started to discount and had great offers, it was already too late! Yes, a pity really.

  • Never went there enough to miss them, which was solely due to their shop being further away than Bunnings. I did go to check timber once and the cheapest stuff was more expensive than Bunnings, so I never went again, until the fire sale where the staff couldn't get stuff scanned so just gave it to me for free. I certainly miss that.

  • missing who? never heard of em lol

  • MISSING MASTERS WHO WERE THEY.

They had the best public toilets.

    • +4

I think Bunnings have their toilets dirty and half broken to make the tradies feel at home.

      • You'd expect that they redo it every couple month with floor demo like kitchen bathroom showroom. But sadly they show case an example of an amateur bunnings shopper bathroom build.

i never even saw a masters, they didn't open any around my area

  • I didn't really go to their stores very often, but when I did it was to buy a shopvac and accessories. There was no where else you could get a shopvac from conveniently including accessories (Godfrey's is not very convenient and doesn't have a wide range of accessories). Apart from that, the brands they offered I wasn't very familiar with - possibly because of Bunnings exclusivity deals, who knows - so I never really had the desire to buy anything else there.

  • They werent around long enough to 'miss'.

  • Went to bunnings today and
Was bounced from one smiling idiot to the next
The prices may not have gone up yet but the quality of their hiring certainly went down
    Walked out empty handed

  • +1

I've always noticed Bunnings staff see you coming and try to run away, and that's after you walk around for 10 mins to find one. The staff are always pretty clueless too, if it's not some kid working after school it's some pensioner who can't afford to retire yet. Also what's with the reversed stores. I shop there a lot for my business and when you think you know where everything is, you go to a different store and the layout is flipped 180'. Very annoying.
I also miss Masters call button. If you need help, you push the call button and staff would magically appear to help you.

  • Literally lived next to one, always went there. Funny how people shop and buy crap from bunnings and not masters. Masters stock high quality, branded products.
    Certainly miss it.

    • I think its more like people dont care about 'high quality, branded products' that are invariably high priced.

Bunnings is cheap on most things but granted, most of it is low end china crap, but that is sufficient quality for most DIY.

  • Yes Masters specials were good before they sold out to the american rip off artists
and the last two weeks of their 4 month long closing down sale
