    DOH.

OP, you should actually read what you are copy/pasting.

Why? We all know its Valentines day in the USA right now.

        • Why? We all know we don't live in the USA.
        • Why? We all know it's not Valentine's day.
        • Why? Because it doesn't add value to the OP.

All of us here at Ozbargain would hope that each OP who posts a deal actually cares, checks, confirms and thinks about the deal that they are sharing with us. And we'd hope that the OP kept it on topic, and not include information that is boring, useless or irrelevant crap that nobody here cares about.

Anyway, the information that the OP blindly copy/pasted is wrong or misleading. A check of the Deals Page shows that this isn't a Valentine's day deal, nor is it even a deal that expires… $1.50 for first year of .com is the standard price.

There is a FAR better deal on that page I linked to - for example, for just USD4.99 you could buy this

  • Excuse my ignorance, but if you 'register a domain name' via a 'deal' such as this, is it just a one-off payment, or do you need to pay again every year? And if the latter applies, can the company kind of 'hold you to ransom' by upping the price to whatever they like at renewal time? Because if your website was successful, they would know you would be willing to pay a decent amount to retain the domain name?

    • So far I understand, you need to pay every year. And it is very possible (and frequently done) that you will require to pay a much higher price next year.

      • Can you simply 'switch providers' and pay someone else to renew your domain name? Or do they kind of 'own you' once you've registered a domain name with them?

        • +2

Yes you can, just transfer the domain to another registrar. Just remember that you must do it at least 2 weeks before it expires or you will need to renew it with the same registrar

        • And in case it helps. You can't transfer a domain out straight after you purchase it. There's a wait of about two months, from memory.

dot com is generally decent when it comes to renewal. i got a dot me for reach cheap and which i love, but damn those Montenegrans know how to play hard ball for renewals on their TLD.

for a good price comparison tool of the major domains registrars: https://tld-list.com/tld/com
current renewal for dot com is around $9

Its a one year fee of US $1.50 for a new domain, you can transfer to another provider if you find another domain service has a lower price, or if you find a special deal that offers a transfer special, then transfer to that deal after the first 60 days or so. Rebel.com is not bad for the standard one year renewal, but you could transfer to a slightly better deal at the reputable Name cheap.

With this deal you are not locked into Rebel.com although many people may choose to stay with Rebel.com for convenience as transferring the domain will involve some setting up with the new domain provider.

Either way, its a good promo that enables you to try out Rebel.com for one year at a minimal price.

The normal price for a domain is about US $10 a year. Plus you may also pay for hosting and DNS, unless you use a free DNS or host yourself, or get a deal on web hosting.

  • Thank you all kindly for your prompt responses/advice.

  • Is this working for people?

I put in two which were "unavailable", one was ->

    yellowriver.com SALE $14.99 $1.50 Unavailable

    Then one was "available" ->

     holycarp.com SALE $4,388.00 In Cart

You notice the yellow star? That means it's a "special domain" of some form and the $1.50 doesn't apply.

  • Be a little careful with Rebel.com.

They will auto-renew your domain several months before it's due for renewal. If you have a credit card on file, they will charge it. If you don't, you'll start getting emails that your payment failed and that your domain is at risk of being delete - even through it's 2-3 months until it's actually up for renewal.

If you subsequently transfer it after they have charged you then the will refund the payment, but it's an extra annoying step you have to go through.
