How long do you wait before putting in a line fault?

So after the massive downpour Perth had late last week, I was expecting my net to go to sh*t on the Thursday, but it was fine until yesterday afternoon where it started to disconnect a lot, sync at speeds all over the place and have some serious static on the phone line (I never use the line, had to actually hook a phone up to test it).

Now I know it's just water in a pit somewhere, but right now my internet has reconnected about 30 times today and the sync speed has been all over the place. If I called up Internode and put in a voice fault (due to the static on the line) I'm sure Telstra wouldn't even look at it for a few days and by then the pit would have more than likely dried out and they'd find no fault.

So this is more just a question to people about how long they generally wait before reporting a fault on their line when it's weather related?

In the same boat as you. I'm not getting disconnections too often, but sync speed has gone to piddle over the weekend.

Will be logging a fault with iiNet tomorrow.

    • similar for us.

      with iiNet (was Adam)

this weekend has been hit & miss but it's 'improving'. I've been thinking I should just do some regular tests and keep screen shots.

TLDR for below; iiNet service sucks, good thing not on contract
we completely lost connection on a sunday a couple of weeks ago, three phone calls to get action happening, then a 15 minute visit in middle of following Tuesday, then wait for Telstra, then told it's all good, but it was slow. rang iinet again and Telstra tech arrived Monday (unannounced) and found dodgy crimp connections 1.2km from house at a junction point/box (even though he and previous tech both had 700mm open circuit reading).
we are eagerly awaiting nbn changeover in june? well that's what the letterbox drop said. then we can shop around as we are not in contract and don't want to start one before nbn connection.

  • I know your pain, when I moved into my property years ago. Had a similar issue, it would rain and then I would loose sync, etc.

It took numerous call-outs, it turned out to be a lose pair in the junction box at the end of the street. Which I was lucky one day to get a proactive technician. So you'll need to ring and keep at it.

So basic answer, wait until it occurs and then ring straight away. They'll do remote testing, or should, and see the line is stuffed at the point of call. So to ensure you never get charged a call out fee.

Sad thing is, it'll be whole reliant on getting a technician that cares to investigate once the area has dried and they can no longer get an 'easy' failure point.

    Good luck.

  • Cheers for the replies. It was still crap as this morning when I was getting ready for work, had dropped out another 6 times over night and was currently synced at 2.3Mbps, when it usually is around 12-13. Emailed Internode last night with my connection logs, and will try and call them tonight when I get home. Don't think this one is going to dry itself out unfortunately..

  • Well just an update, ended up losing dial tone entirely last Sunday and sync speed wouldn't go above 2.4Mbps. Called Internode and put in a no dial tone fault, first thing Monday morning had a SMS from Internode saying Telstra had checked the line and didn't find a fault.

Had my own registered cabler out here this arvo, tested inside the house at the first join, at the MDF on both my side and the Telstra side, and what do you know, extremely low sync speed and no dial tone at all of them! So not only have Telstra not done what they're meant to (and they're f***ing useless) but now I'm also out of pocket as I had to get someone else to do it. The cabler put it down to a ground fault and said Telstra haven't even tagged the MDF so how could they have been able to test their side of the MDF.

Now to try and put in another fault with Internode and be on hold for 4 hours.. fun way to spend a Tuesday night.
