Never Owned a PlayStation but Encountered Fraudulent Deductions from My Bank Account

So the bank informed me that unauthorised deductions have been made from my bank account by 'PlaystationNetwork".

Now I googled this, discovered Sony PSN was hacked in 2011, 77 million customers affected, blah blah blah.. They have like 3 million credit card holders details etc..

Though I have never ever owned a playstation in my life, Nintendo all the way ;) Like wtf?

Has anyone encountered this problem? They deducted $40 twice, and tried to deduct more but luckily my bank put a block on my account.

Yes, I have kids, and no they don't own any sony consoles.

Bank says they will investigate and only when they find out who, then I will get my $80 back. I don't do online shopping but do sometimes use eftpos.

Help

Cheers

  • first, PSN having been hacked may not have anything to do with your case. simply someone got his hands on your c/c info and bought something on PSN. maybe you got hacked.

second, "Bank says they will investigate and only when they find out who, then I will get my $80 back. " that is NOT how it works afaik. you shall report to the police(i am not sure if this is necessary since your credit is not your money technically) and prove you couldn't have done the transations. the bank should reverse the charge and they should carry on the investigations with the law enforcement departments.

forgot to mention, sorry to hear your situation.

    • I dont own a credit card, it's just a normal everyday debit card :)

yea, i was thinking about getting rid of the "debit mastercard" and getting the old key card back a while back. i need to seriously consider it now.

        • You think that's better? Lol now I want to consider it too..
          And thanks ;)

@Julie4dung: the number on a "key card" is not a valid "credit card"(using it loosely) number hence it cannot be used for online purchases. so it is safer IMO.

  • Just means someone got your card number from somewhere and used it on the PSN. There should be no problems getting your money back though, the bank doesn't necessarily have to find out who it was.

    • Yeah I hope so, but that's what the fraud officer said.
This is the first time this has happened to me, and I'm just wondering where the f**k they got my details when I don't do online shopping and only use my debit card with large purchases say for eg: Harvey Norman

  • This just happened to me.
was the charge from "playstation network"
just google the merchant, its known fraud.

They got me for 12 transactions all about $90.

What bank are you with? im with anz, who refund instantly while they investigate.

either way, you will get your funds back.

    • I'm with Westpac, and they didn't refund instantly at all, just gave me a fraud ID number, said they will investigate, and that I'll be getting a new debit card during the next week. Sighs!

Things must have changed from a number of years ago. I had hundreds of dollars of fraudulent transactions on my ANZ Debit Card, which at the time really hurt when I was a full time uni student. I didn't get my money back for at least four months afterwards, after having to call ANZ a number of times and having to go into a branch (because more and more transactions kept popping up on my card, even after the card was cancelled.).

The ANZ Falcon that they advertise didn't work. They claim to be able to notify the customer of fraudulent transactions and cancel the card before things get crazy. I was the one that noticed the transactions after I got my statement.

So I moved to Bankwest once I started my internship, and I told them my story, and they gave me a $1000 credit card to make my purchases on.
I do have a debit card, but the only time I take it with me is when I go overseas, incase something happens to my credits cards and I need to make an emergency purchase.

Credit is easier to get back. When they take your real hard earn money from your debit card, it is a LOT harder to get back apparently.

  • um , how would a sony breach lead to your card being used on psn , you never gave them your details, CC fraud is very common.

    • I dont have a credit card, and that Sony breach was told to me by the bank fraud officer, therefore I googled it :)
My first time encountering this problem in my life, so bear with me coz I have no idea sunshine :)

  • on my commbank c/c, i block international purchase both in-store and online and ATM cash advance. i can lock my card as soon as i realise i need to while having my mobile with me. wish other banks could have apps like that.

This is why I got a credit card. I figured I might as well spend someone else's money online instead of my own. I believe trying to get money back with a debit card is much harder.
