eBay and PayPal Charges

Hi, can someone please tell me the charges that are taken out by eBay and PayPal well you sell something please? I assume it's a percentage. Do they take commission on the postage too? Thanks. C.

eBay takes 9.9% of the total price (item price and postage)
PayPal takes 2.6% + $0.30 of the total price (item price and postage)

  • Lets talk about the postage final value fee, who thinks it's wrong? I message their live support about a week ago and they said it was introduced to keep postage costs by sellers honest.. If anything it will do the complete opposite as sellers now have to mark up their costs to compensate for the fee.

I sold an item and charged $13 for freight (it was going to somewhere Queensland outside of metro area) and they took $1.50 from that $13. I barely made a cent off the freight cost as I normally add $1-2 to compensate for the packaging material (ie. Bubble envelope and sticky tape) as well as my time.

it keeps them honest because if postage was excluded every single item would be $0.01 and $100 postage etc. But I agree the costs seem pretty high.

In addition to only paying fees on the $0.01, if the buyer was unhappy they'd get a refund - you guessed it, $0.01. Shipping fees were exempt.

eBay shut down that scam and made more money in one go, a win-win for them.

Paypal and Ebay are pretty upfront on their fees and are easily searchable if you tried, since you made this thread, I guess you haven't done any research. It's in your own best interest to do so to avoid being scammed by buyers and to avoid problems in general- including postage, rather than relying on people to spoon feed you.

In all honesty, sellers who use the system would already "factor in" fees before listing so they "cover costs"

All fees are very clear on the website, if you want a fee free system go with Gumtree, plenty of tyre kickers / lowballers / time wasters and gronks on there compared to Ebay, I usually factor my asking price + Add reasonable handling and postage costs, never had an unhappy buyer, I provide packaging and shipping to their paid for price and still end up getting what I wanted for the item

Factoring in a wider audience makes up for the 11% in fees you pay, sellers who sell alot obviously get reduced fees

    • The problem with gumtree (as a seller) is that there's too many people expecting very low prices which is never good ;)

      • Exactly why I sell on ebay to avoid the lowballers

The first link when you literally just paste "tell me the charges that are taken out by eBay and PayPal well you sell something" into Google:

  • Thank you for all your information. I must say though, I take offense to some people's comments directed at me. I thought the forums are meant to be a helpful site. Often I read nasty comments in response to forum questions. It's really unnecessary. If it's really annoying that some people seek help instead of finding things out for themselves, then why not ignore it, why bother making a negative comment that is most unhelpful? It has made me think twice as to whether I should ask for help again.
Usually I don't worry about the eBay and PayPal charges. I just work out a price that someone might pay including postage. I always make the postage less than the item price. As long as I am not out of pocket and someone is happy with my item that's all that matters.
I haven't sold anything for more than a year on eBay.
When I asked about the fees on here I had just received a payment in PayPal which made me wonder what the commission was. In the past I have tried searching the answer myself and couldn't find it. Maybe I should have asked where to find the answers instead!
I could have tried again searching but thought there are so many knowledgeable people on Ozbargain I will ask them.
Thanks again for those who have helped me. C.
