Strange Sound Whilst Braking on 6 Month Old Golf after Being Parked up for 3.5 Weeks

Hey all,

Looking for some advice on what people think this could be. It's pretty strange.

The car has 6k kms on the clock. I've had it since new and it's in perfect condition (or WAS).

I parked it up for 3.5 weeks when I went on holiday.

I started driving it the day I got back and it had developed a strange sound when I brake. It's only really notable when slowing down from 50-60+k/hr. It kind of sounds like a pod racer from Star Wars episode 1 haha. As I slow down, it makes what I can only describe as a low 'wuh wuh wuh' sound. The sound slows down along with the car, i.e. they get farther apart until I'm doing about 20-30 when it becomes inaudible.

The car still stops incredibly well. I've checked the tires for flats etc and they are absolutely bang-on what they should be. I assumed that it was just a layer of something that had formed so I have done a few hundred ks and whilst the car is no different to drive, the sound is still there.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry for the crummy description!

Probably rust on the brake disks
Give it a good work out for a week and see if the noise goes away
If it doesn't get the dealer to check it out

Could also be wheel bearings but I wouldn't expect them to crap out within 6k

The sound reminds me of warped disks but to be honest, I would not expect that to happen for ages
I got 120k out of my pads on a Swift Sports 2012

  • Thanks for the response mate.
I think I must be at the check with the dealer stage. I've done a fair few hundred k's in the past couple of weeks and tried a couple of 'heavy brakes' to clear it but it's not solved.

    • All good
I would try and film the noise for the dealer so you can give them an idea
to me it sounds like warped disks / light shudder but with under 10k on the car thats pretty poor form, not unless its developed a fault for sitting so long
Either way, not normal, perhaps the last service you had they forgot to put something back properly
If its under warranty, hit them up

      • Thanks man. Will get in contact with them. It's not even had a first service yet. It would be due in about 5 months, or another ~10k.

Typical European car, that's why I always stick to Japanese cars :)

If it was a Peugeot or Fiat I'd agree with you, but German cars generally treat me and the family very well.

  • Had it happen with my car when left it unused for a few months. Rusts unevenly on the rotor. Went away after a week or 2.
I try to remember not to use parking/hand brakes when parking long term.

  • Inspect the brake pads visually and maybe wash the brakes/tyres.

I doubt it is a serious issue or maybe it's been there but you noticed it recently after your holiday you became sensitive to some noise.

  • As others have said it's probably rust. Go for a drive on a quiet empty street and ride the brakes with your left foot lightly as you go. Should clear every thing off.

  • Did anyone have access to the car while you were away and drove it maybe?
is the noise at the front or rear of car? at low speed rolling along apply handbrake very slowly does that give you the same noise? ( possible frozen rear handbrake shoe)
