Help with New Modem Choice

I could do with some help in choosing a new modem. Over the past year or so I've had the Archer D7, which ran really well until we got a new laptop, and then I couldn't get the 5ghz channel to stabilise at all. I then "upgraded" to a Netgear d7000, which has had a similar issue =, but this time only effecting the 2.4ghz channel. Netgear have agreed to RMA for their modem router, and so I'm on the look out again for something that will work. Ideally I want something that:
can share contents of an external hard drive (and write to the same)
can add vpn details to, rather than need to do it per device

We currently have 1 laptop which can pick up the 5ghz channel, 2 which are 2.4 only; 3 mobiles which can run on the 5; an xbox one; and the sony tv is also connected via ethernet so I can watch Netflix, and use plex on it.

I am on ADSL, and don't know when the NBN is due, or what format it will take. I don't really care if I need to have seperate router / modem or one which combines both.

Please help!!

You sure it's not the new laptop that has the problem ?

  • I wondered that with the first issue I had on the Archer, but its been rock steady on the Netgear. I only ever connect it via the 5ghz channel, whereas the other 2 laptops can only connect on the 2.4, and that is the one that kept dropping out and would not allow the laptops to connect to the network without resetting the router again.

  • The ASUS routers have a good rep, I have an RT-N66U (NBN), if you are on ADSL you'd need a different model.
