Been using mSecure for awhile and just got a in-app pop up telling me mSecure 5 is available next month.

I would highly recommend them vs other password managers who charge subscriptions (Password1).

mSecure charge a 1-time fee of USD $9.99 and you can use it on all your devices (iOS, MacOS, Windows, Android).
RRP USD $29.99

Below is from mSecure's site:
Pre-Order mSecure 5 today for only $9.99!
(available March, 2017)

mSecure 5 has been entirely redesigned to make your information easier to use, easier to access and and even more secure. For our loyal customers, we are offering a special pre-order price that is 66% off. This is a one-time purchase for a cross-platform license giving you access to all of mSecure's features on all of your devices (iOS, Android, Mac and Windows).

One of the main goals for this release was to bring a more modern look and feel to the user interface. This type of change is more than simply stylistic. Making an interface look pretty is important but is only a small piece of the puzzle. Creating an attractive interface while enhancing the usability of the app was our focus. We took our time to build an interface that is both beautiful and effective.

But there is so much more than just visual improvements. With over 27 major new features, like our new Security Center, site icons, browser extensions, auto-fill for 3rd party apps, Safari extension, new field types, and many more, it’s easier then ever to make productive use of your information. In the end, the experience of mSecure 5 is superior in every way to its predecessor.

Our new cloud service makes keeping mSecure in sync on all of your devices extremely simple. With an mSecure Cloud account you will always have instant access to your information. Whether it’s deciding to upgrade your phone or something unfortunate happens to one of your devices, you simply log in to your account and all your information is synced in immediately! Of course, if storing your data in the cloud is not for you, you can always choose to disable syncing so it is only stored locally on your device.

While the security for mSecure has always been rock solid, we believe it is important to keep pace with industry standards when it comes to encrypting your information. For a digital wallet, nothing is more fundamentally important than the encryption algorithm used to protect the data stored in the app. We replaced the aging Blowfish-256 encryption in older mSecure apps with industry standard, military grade AES-256 encryption. No matter where it is located, our end-to-end encryption method protects your information with the highest levels of security.

If mSecure charges $30 for major updates every year then what's the functional difference between that and a subscription?

    1Password is $3/mo.

    • +2

I still have 1Password 3, no sub fees and iOS version always updates for free after original purchase (which I got for free years ago too!)

      • +2

got 1 password for past 3 years or so. never paid anything apart from the initial one off cost. best thing ever

    • You have a point!

      Thanks for letting me know.

    • +1

I havent used msecure, but i'm a big fan 1password.

They've never charged me for any updates when i had a windows licence, but recently moved to sub because i have a mac now. 1password is $3.99 USD, which costs me $5.29 AUD last month. If you have a mac you can still buy a licence for $99, which also includes the family sharing account, so you can have multiple members of your family use a seperate account.

I'll do this once my wife comes to her senses and stops using the same password for everything.

If mSecure charges $30 for major updates every year

I've been using it for over 5 years now I think and have never been charged for updates.

I've been using it for over 5 years now I think and have never been charged for updates.

Because clearly you have never updated to a new version JV. Sheesh your posts just get worse and worse.

    • Just got a reply regarding updates:

      Hi xxxxxx,

We believe that all the additional features and enhancements merit the charge to upgrade. However, customers who have purchased mSecure recently (within 60 days) are eligible to upgrade to mSecure 5 at no additional charge. I do not know our future plans in terms of charges. However, I can tell you that we do not plan to release major updates on a yearly basis. We do have plans for lots of feature enhancements and additions to mSecure 5 though. If we released a paid for upgrade every year, there would be no difference between that and a yearly subscription.

      Thank you,
      xxxxxx

What is the difference between Lastpass charging an annual fee that you don't really have to pay anyway versus this product that you have to pay to upgrade to the new versions and of course security fixes?

Which model is more sustainable long term?

As Coxymia said USD$30 is the normal price, if they roll out a new version every 2 years that USD$15 per year compared to Lastpass for USD$9.99 per year, even at 3 years between versions it's USD$10 a year. Looking at versions it looks like a new version is released every year.

Lastpass is constantly updated and they're not waiting for a new version before putting fixes and improvements into place.

    • versus this product that you have to pay to upgrade to the new versions

      That is not true.

mSecure don't charge any annual fee for updates.

      • -1

        That is not true.

What part of "this product that you have to pay to upgrade to the new versions" is NOT true JV? Another one of JV's random posts.

mSecure don't charge any annual fee for updates.

They do if you want new features or updates as these are rolled into a new version.

Here are their release notes, no new features or updates (even security) for older versions once the new version is released.

Just for you, I downloaded and reinstalled the current version and my licence key worked fine…

Bought the desktop and iphone app back in 2011 and haven't had to pay a cent since for the updates…

Charge for new versions and basic updates = paying a subscription. It's the same premise and this turns out to be less secure and more expensive.

KeePass is free and available on almost all devices unlike mSecure.

KeePass is recommended by German Federal Office for Information Security, French Network and Information Security Agency and audited by European Commission's Free and Open Source Software Auditing (EU-FOSSA).

I would submit a negative vote as poor value, but apparently that is not appreciated.

    • KeePass(keepass.info) is free and available on almost all devices unlike mSecure.

I agree but KeePass lacks a lot of the functionality of say LastPass and when you have a lot of passwords to maintain you end up reusing passwords or storing them in your browser because KeePass doesn't offer easy or reliable synchronisation, no browser integration etc etc. I used KeePass for many many many years but once I went to LastPass I've never looked back.

Having said that KeePass is still a very good product but for me I find that LastPass has increased my security dramatically thanks to features like the synchronisation that works immediately, password generator when signing up and password entry for apps and websites.

Extensions are available for chrome and firefox. Tutorials exist such as How to Integrate KeePass with Chrome and Firefox.

Personally, I don't mind the extra few seconds copying in passwords. I would also like a browser that doesn't support many of the newer HTML5 standards which provide access to hardware like a webcam and doesn't support plugins.

      +1 for KeePass

  • I highly recommend Msecure… Been using it for a while on my android devices… (It syncs great!)

Current version on Windows 10 App Store is $12.29 incl. GST +
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/store/p/msecure/9wzdncrdfqqj

Therefore newer version is slightly cheaper…

I'm ^+1 this deal. Cheers Rakddon.

Not correct, the windows store version is different to the windows version. This is weird as why not have have all versions the same?

"I’m sorry about the issue’s you’re having. mSecure for Windows desktop and mSecure for the Microsoft Store are two separate versions of mSecure. We do not consider the Microsoft Store version the new version."

      https://support.msecure.com/forums/topic/old-version-verses-…

      • Ahh ok no problems…
I didn't realise this deal was for the desktop app… I think that's what you are getting at…
So to get the store app would be a further $12.29 incl. GST + ontop of this deal to get the full Msecure experience…
        RIGHT OFF! o.O

        • So to get the store app would be a further $12.29

You need to make a separate purchase for each platform, then updates for that platform are free

        • @jv:

          with mSecure 5 it's 1-time purchase only.

        • @Rakddon: looks like it's not covering the windows 10 app version however.

        • @Rakddon:

          with mSecure 5 it's 1-time purchase only.

I'm pretty sure when I bought it, I had to pay separately for the app and desktop version, but all updates have been free since…

        • @jv: I think it's a special bundled deal that we get apps for all platforms. It states 66% off so original price is roughly the sum of msecure for desktop ($19.99) and mobile ($9.99).

Since it is not out yet, it is unknown if they would have features that need IAP!

  • Anyone use or have an opinion on Sticky Passwords?. Pure VPN users just got an email for their lifetime subscription for an 84% discount (usually 150$)

    • Anyone use or have an opinion on Sticky Passwords?. Pure VPN users just got an email for their lifetime subscription for an 84% discount (usually 150$)

You just answered your question…. lifetime license for 84% off! Don't get me wrong sometimes these deals are real deals but sometimes they are a short sighted business decision to make a heap of money in a short time before selling off the product or slowing down development.

      • Yeh just more looking for someone that uses it that had an opinion it was good or not. Had a few bits of functionality I liked the idea of (automatic clipboard clearing - unusual from what I have seen, Form filling, Autopassword generation, etc). It has a free version but I like the encrypted cloud sharing that the subscribed product has. I wouldnt buy it for 150 and I hate monthly subscriptions. But lifetime for 24$ (I assume American) seemed value.

  • So what does everyone recommend is the best value password manager for us ozbargainers?

    • +4

KeePass is, IMHO, the best free product around. Personally I use 1Password though as I find it much more usable.

      Value in .. ?
How easy and quick it is to setup?
How easy and quick it is to learn to use?
How easy and quick it is to use every day?
Does it manage only passwords or licences or… ?
How much would all of the passwords be worth if something happened and someone got access to every password and what ever is stored in there?
Is it difficult to use so at times you would just skip using it and therefore risk insecurity?
      Purchase price?
      Update fee?
      So, value in… ?

I use 1Password as when I purchased it it was the only program that was easy to use, had a great set of features and was secure.

      • -1

        So, value in… ?

        'best' value.

        • By that you mean over all the categories or cost?
Because 'best value' most of the time infers price so the question has ambiguity. And my comment is completely relevant as a lot of the discussion above is purely about price, when that is not the only criteria that some people use.

So, in similar manner what do you mean by best?
And I would still be curious what op means by best.

Edit: if you look at adam's reply he at least provides some criteria for his interpretation. Best value as cost one product, best value for him in terms of usability another product.

It may be more helpful for other people to see rational behind others' view of best. It may lead to more informed view of personal selection. So I don't get why I got neg.

  • For Android and PC users I use pocket and have done so for quite a few years http://timothyjc.blogspot.com.au/2010/12/wallet-for-android.…
Has been great and no problems and is FREE. But for the ad free version it is $2.31. I don't really notice the ads on the free version though.

I have always been an Msecure user and loved the product…so much so that when they asked me to joins the beta testers program I jumped at the opportunity.

Thats where things all went south. Apparently they are moving to a subscription model and ditching the ability to sync via icloud or dropbox, so if you want your passwords on more than one device you will need to pay the subscription fees.

Needless to say I dropped out of the beta program and have ditched the product all together.

  • -1

I just store my passwords on notepad.exe and then sync to Dropbox..

    • Which means anyone who has physical access to your devices or Dropbox have trivial access to your passwords.

  • mSecure 5 will be a very different app in terms of activating your license. You must create an mSecure account as your license to use the features, including syncing, tied to this account. (Yes, no more syncing via dropbox.)

Basically you create an account with them and pay for whatever platform you want. You download and install the app and once logged in, you are good to go. In this deal, US$9.99 allows your account to be used on all platforms. For iOS, mSecure 5 will be a free apps from app store but it won't do much for you until you buy the license for your mSecure account.

    Directly from mSecure support:

There will be no subscription fee or membership fee. Except for the fee to purchase mSecure 5. I’m not sure about moving forward, but I believe we will be charging a fee for major app upgrades either for every major number release or every other major numbered release.

Thankfully, that doesn’t mean we will not be releasing plenty of incremental updates because we already have plenty of features planned out. It also doesn’t mean we will have yearly major numbed releases.

  • I use keepass. It's free, no ads and no subscriptions. Even has Dropbox functionality

  • This is an email I just received from mSecure:

    Hi xxxxxx,

Thank you for your interest in mSecure 5 and our pre-order sale. A single purchase of mSecure 5 will grant you access to mSecure 5 on all platforms available (iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows). With mSecure 5, we will be implementing our own syncing feature. We will no longer have iCloud or Dropbox syncing as syncing options. (Quick clarification: iCloud syncing in the current version of mSecure is not a backup system. It is a syncing feature and should be used as such) However, we will still have Wi-Fi syncing in mSecure for customers who do not want to use our system and you’ll still be able to create and restore from backup files.

The full price of mSecure 5 will be $29.99. That is the price to use mSecure 5 on all devices. It is also not a subscription fee. It is a one time price. However, we will have an introductory price of $19.99 at launch. Unfortunately, this pre-order sale price is only available through our website. However, we might have other sales and discounts available through the App Store itself in the future.

We’ve set our release timeframe to March. However, we do not currently have a set date. We will try release as soon as possible, but it might be at the end of March. We’ll make sure to send out emails with information about our release as we get closer to release.

Lastly, yes, we will release a basic free version of mSecure 5 on all platforms and have an in-app purchase of the premium features. That way users can download mSecure on all platforms and simply use their mSecure accounts to get access to everything, including their mSecure information!
Please let me know if you have any other questions about mSecure 5, our pre-order sale, or anything else mSecure related.

    Thank you,
    xxxxx
