NOT The Absolute Cheapest Air Conditioner?

A little bit different to this thread:

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/291426

I moved into a new place last year that doesn't have aircon and so far this summer has been torture so I've decided that by next summer I will get aircon installed.

When's the best time to buy? I saw Bing Lee had 20% off their eBay store recently but I didn't do enough research to buy, would that be considered a good sale for aircon?

My place is open plan both downstairs and upstairs so I'm worried that it may be hard to cool the place with one unit on the wall but don't really feel like spending thousands on a complicated setup. Downstairs is about 85m2 and the same again upstairs.

Does anyone have any recommendations on when and what to buy?

Thanks

  • Generally speaking, you should have 120 watts (.12 kilowatts) of cooling per square metre.

    For example,
    a 3 metre x 3 metre bedroom
    = 9 metres squared
    9 x .12 = ~1.1 kw

So you're going to need multiple units.

    Is ducted evaporative an option?

    • Ducted sounds expensive, but then again so does multiple units.

  • When's the best time to buy?

I have zero evidence for this but in my imagination it's at the end of summer.

    • I was thinking it would be the same.

  • If its open plan. Go with a good unit upstairs.
Heat rises so cool upstairs and the cold air will flow downstairs anyway.
Thats if you want to do it on the cheaper side of the scale but go with a big brand unit.

you could also get 2x2.5HP units. one upstairs and one down.

  • Get a Panasonic split for downstairs. Go to their site and you can do a rough plan and it will suggest the unit size. ( ignore their price, JB etc is much cheaper than RRP)

If you think the price is ok now just buy it rather than waiting to get 100 cheaper, the prices don't vary that dramatically.

  • Go to a place that offers install in the price as the install will be the hardest thing to get. Don't just buy something and think about the installer later because you won't be able to find one.

I bought from blue star air con a couple of years ago. They just want to do simple back to back for the price but it was an ok deal for a fujitsu and is still going fine. They have a fujitsu 7.1kw for $2100 installed.

I also just bought some multi splits but they were all daikin … hmmm, rude to talk about that cost in public …
