google nexus 1 ? htc desire?

Ok, I am looking at an alternative to an iphone. These 2 I understand are top of the range.
If anyone has them - what plan are you on and who are you with?
Whats the best plan you know of?
What do you think of these phones? Which one is better?
Should prices drop now the iphone 4 is out?

Telstra is the best place for htc desire… go with family and friends offer…

  • Samsung Galaxy S is right up there as well.. (free on $49Cap Optus)
Big AMOLED screen which is better than the Desire's LCD.

Nexus One has some big flaws (screen is unusual) and that little nubbin of a trackball gets jammed up.

I wouldn't expect prices to drop much if at all for a while yet.

WTF? The N1 screen is beautiful. Don't tell me you fell for all that FUD that was spread at the beginning of the year?

Trackball is fine too, never had an issue with it, and you hardly ever use it with Android OS anyway, and having the 8 colour notification illuminations on it is a big bonus over other phones.

      • While the colors on those OLED screens are nice, the pentile matrix subpixel arrangement kills it for me. If you view it next to a Motorola Milestone or phone with similar LCD screen, you'll know what I mean. The LCD is much smoother, while the OLED screen looks aliased.

None of my N1 friends have ever mentioned it though, so maybe I'm picky. ahah.

  • The Droid/Milestone 2 with physical keyboard will be out soon. The GSM version of the Droid X should be out eventually too. They're both in the same league as the N1/Desire specs-wise. The Droid X has a nice larger screen though.

I'm not a big fan of the pentile matrix OLED screens used in the N1 and Desire, they don't look as fine as the LCDs on the Droid/Milestone. I read HTC are going to use Sony SLCDs in some phones due to an OLED screen shortage though.

  • We've got both a Desire and N1 in the family. They are both great phones, and almost identical hardware. The differences….

I believe the N1 is better than Desire for the following reasons:
    1. Has illuminated trackball for notifications.
    2. Will always gets OS updates first - Android is made for the N1, everything else is ported from that.
    3. The screen is slightly brighter and better colours (Desire screen has a brownish colour cast).
    4. Has a noise cancelling microphone.

    Desire has the following:
    1. FM radio (though this can be enabled in N1 using custom ROMS)
    2. HTC Sense UI which is personal preference (though this can be added to N1 using custom ROMS)

Having said that, a Samsung Galaxy S is a great choice if you can live without a LED camera flash and like iPhone styling.

I think it will take a few months for prices to drop since the iPhone cash cow is in full stream at the moment there is no incentive.
