RESOLVED BigW price matching

Just came back from BigW after attempting to price match the Mother 500mL 4 pack in the current coles catalogue special mentioned here.

I brought (as evidence) the pdf printout, and the printoff from the coles website showing the postcode of my area.

The lady at the register pressed the assistance button as she cant authorise price matches. The manager came over to the register to check, just said "no" and walked off. I said "excuse me, for what reason can't you price match?". He just said "its a special, we dont price match specials". I said he should fix up the website, which he just said "its already fixed" under his breath as he walked away.

This is the price matching policy.

Excludes clearance or wholesale items; online sales; soiled and damaged stock, liquidation sale offers; member or club prices; second hand, floor stock, end of line, ex demo or similar; and a price printed in error.

As far as i can tell, it doesnt meet any of the exclusions?

Can someone let me know if i'm right or wrong in this matter? I'm not looking to argue here, just want a second opinion.

cheers
Davo

  • Had a look Davo1111 and I can't see any reason why he should have knocked it back. Maybe you disrupted his morning tea and he was in a bad mood.

You could consider making a complaint, given it is Big W you would likely get a positive response.

  • I went to Big W plumpton to price match a wireless mouse from MSY. I took the pdf price list and a print out of the page on their website. The manager asked me for the price, didn;t bother looking and did the price match. I had no problems with them.

You should make a complain to BIG W and they should response.

  • thanks guys, i appreciate your opinions.

  • why dont you call big w head office and clarify it with them, rather than reading a website or asking at store. It seems to me you are trying to categorise what special it is, rather than admit its a special.

    • i expected a price matching policy to be pretty clear cut, particularly when price matching from major retailers other catalogues. Considering most stores ask you to bring the specials catalogue as evidence, it seems a bit silly to not allow specials. Perhaps i'll give head office a call. ta

      • I do see it as clear, CLEARLY in your favour. If not they need to update their website to not include specials or up to indivdual store manager discretion.

It is the manager who has introduced something new that is not consistent with their online policy. Given that this is in writing it should have more weight than something verbal which is difficult to prove. However, I do not know if not meeting these policies is against the Act or the retailers code.

I have found the Woolies/Coles group quite lenient in the past with returns (never priced matched though), so I think if you contacted them you should get some action.

  • I don't see why the wouldn't, they are still making a profit and at least you are shopping there rather than posting negative experiences about BigW.

Short sighted really, perhaps it he was at he peak of his 'man cycle' and it was too much effort :P

  • hope ya got his name down
    make a compliant
    if they say ur right
ask for him to be re trained on customer service
ask for his training records to ensure that the re training is completed too!

    • And ask for it to be done in a specific way, bloody woolworths pulled a swifty on me when I filed a discrimination claim against them, I found it insanely stupid that they wouldn't re-train their staff properly to avoid getting another discrimination claim against them.

i just called up customer service and the lady was just confused as to why it was being refused. She forwarded me to the manager at BigW at the store where i was refused

Me: Hi there, i was just trying to find out if you guys would be able to price match coles catalogues?
Manager: Oh, is this the gentleman who was here yesterday regarding the mother?
    Me: yes, thats me
Manager: ok, generally we dont price match off photocopied catalogues/printoffs from the internet or is below cost price.
    Me: yup
Manager: i spoke to my general manager who confirmed that coles do have stock, if you come in we can make an exception and price match for you
    Me: ok, thankyou

So, ill head up today and get it price matched.

If he had said, "no we cant pricematch due to its a photocopy" or "no its below cost price (the price being x)" we wouldnt have been in this situation. oh well, all good now

Perhaps the website should be updated to say "we need to origional catalogue, not a photocopy" and "we can't sell things below cost price" etc etc. I'm not angry or anything, but would prefer to get some clarity… i don't think i'd be the first person to be in this situation.

Also, i think there must be some BigW spies on ozbargain (puts on tinfoil hat)

    • Was there no conclusion then? Everyone would prefer to get clarity. It is unreasonable not to except a photocopy, they can just check the website or call the store to confirm, and there is no "below cost price" mentioned in the price matching policy. And, at the end, they did the price match for you?!? I am thinking that all those price matching policies are more to false advertisement. Most of the time we can only get price matched after wasting time struggling making fuss and hassle.
Btw, can we do the other way around? Is Coles willing to price match Woolies/BigW?

      • Was there no conclusion then?

im heading in now to get it, i've had lectures all day.

It is unreasonable not to except a photocopy

well its easy to produce a photoshopped catalogue if its been printed, so i can understand this

Is Coles willing to price match Woolies/BigW?

I dont know to be honest.

        • What I meant was the price match policy is still unclear. Let's say I go to that BigW and asked them to price match the Mother like you did, I don't think they'll easily say yes. So they give it to you because you complained and ignore those people who's not putting any extra effort?

  • Well thats really good to know now but seriously are you going to go there and get it price matched now. You should have told the guy "Thank you for clarifying that but if only you would have told me this on the day then maybe i wouldnt have wasted my time or you wouldn't have wasted my time."

I mean how much are you going to saving maybe $10 or $20. Don't you worry about the time it takes you to go back there (car cost, time, effort) and then speak to the manager and finally get a deal. But then that;s just me.

    • Thinking about the saving , i am thinking its Davo and he likes his mother (the drink not sure about other one) so i am thinking he could be saving a lot if buying in bulk , i am sure the first buy was a tester…….

For me i would go just to feel the efforts put thus far have been validated otherwise you are just a whinger right ?

    • i'm a big fan of it. Plus the cost price is around $8 for a 4 pack, meaning they're losing almost $3 every one i buy. I'm going to buy a few, more than what i would have origionally bought if they had price matched it in the first place

    • (for the record i didnt neg your comment)

I see what your saying, however if a company says they will do something, they should be expected to hold up to that guarantee. Thats why i came in here for confirmation, not to have a cry, but to see if i was missing the fine print that excluded this deal.

someones job your putting at risk for a few dollars,

regarding that, i havent mentioned which bigW i was referring to (there are quite a few in canberra). The lady when i called customer service didnt type anything down (as far as i could hear). When i've approached people about the issue i wasn't complaining. More to find out why they wouldnt stand up to their guarantee.

      • i think his service was pretty poor, but I wasnt making that comment to you, just those encouraging you to complain. I think you've been pretty objective overall, but its not like ive seen anything that says "they will beat anyprice"

        • +1

Hmm, so a store advertises a price match policy but does not honour it and the service is poor, and customers should not be encouraged to complain? A little difficult to understand, infernal_max.

Nice work, Davo. And hopefully you'll have made a difference for people who choose to price match at Big W in the future.

          • @lumiere: Agreed, we consumers aren't exactly paid to look after those who serve us, they are paid to look after us so we get ripped off everytime happily when we buy from their store. We are what we are, customers of a store, and when a store advertises price matching, but doesn't honour it, we get a little angry with the seemingly false advertising of such a policy.

          • -3

@lumiere: lets do some research here, this is the price of the mother pack on coles's website
            Mother Drink 4 pack

            4 x 500mL

Was $11.65 each Now $5.34 each Save $6.31 each

This is the policy as posted by davo

Excludes clearance or wholesale items; online sales; soiled and damaged stock, liquidation sale offers; member or club prices; second hand, floor stock, end of line, ex demo or similar; and a price printed in error.

It is clearly a special item to draw customers into the store, be it regular shoppers or non coles shoppers, its not difficult to understand why it wasnt price matched at first.

So? Why shouldnt any store price match the deal? It's not a clearance… even if it is a loss leader, they should write in their T&Cs that they cant sell it for below cost price…

If they claim to have the "lowest prices everyday" and they say they will match any price, why shouldn't we hold them to that claim?

              • -1

@Davo1111: they didnt say any price, and i think loss leaders fall into the wholesale category

                • @infernal_max: i thought about it, and i think the wholesale definition refers to me purchasing items at wholesale, i.e. a pallet of mother.

I'm not sure, its all pretty vague.

      This guys a nut…

in your ignorant opinion, are you going to start following my comments again and negging them once more? I havent forgotten you either

  • I rocked up again and spoke to customer service, it was like an interrogation "why didnt you buy it there?" etc etc

She called duty manager, who phoned boss, who confirmed the deal. Bought 6 * 4 packs and left.
I asked for a plastic bag, and found out the entire store was out of bags.

It's all over now. Was it worth it? nope.

    • I thought they couldn't even give that stuff away anyway?

      • The orange cans don't taste too much different to the red, and they don't taste too much different to the old stuff. I don't mind it, but a lot of people I know hate it.

        • the old mother was horriffic, i got given 40 cans for free, and only drank it because i hate being a waste.

        • i struggled to finish the can of the original mother, the new cans are quite nice

  • Manager: i spoke to my general manager who confirmed that coles do have stock, if you come in we can make an exception and price match for you

Exception to what? The store manager's made up rules? I'd call the HO again and tell them that although you eventually got what you wanted you were not happy with what you had to go through and suggest the improvements they could make/implement.

Same scenario happened to me too. When Kmart and Big W had their massive toy sale. I got the same response from Big W as you did Davo. I ended up getting the item for the special price after arguing about it being their policy and if they don't match specials why would anyone even bother to get a price match. The price match policy also pops up on their register screens. Moral of the story is don't trust what staff and managers tell you, sometimes they don't even know their own policy. Shocking but true.

Store: "we can't go below our cost price"
me: "OK, then I'll buy it at your cost price"
Store: "err umm, can't do that, don't know what the cost price is…"
    me: face palm
