Light weight electric scooters - does anyone have experience with these?

I got inspired by these reading the thread from last week about the Xiaomi model.

Looking at AliExpress there are a whole bunch using 18650 batteries and many with carbon fibre chassis:

Does anyone have experience purchasing these and using it for commuting short distances (ie; 3-5km to/from a train station).

Cheers,

    • I don't know about other states, but these would be illegal to ride on the street in NSW, and also illegal to ride on the footpath. Considering the fines have recently become excessive for bike offences, I wouldn't risk it.
That said, I do see the occasional rider in the Sydney CBD. Although thinking about it, I no longer see the people I saw a few times - maybe they got fined?

      • why are they illegal?

Out of date laws that were designed to avoid people screaming along footpaths on devices with an engine, skittling pedestrians on the one hand, or mixing it with 4ton SUVs on the road on the other.
          Point 2:

        • Combination of the law having not caught up, and preventing people getting on overpowered toys and getting hurt, or hurting others.

While you are fairly unlikely to be booked if you are riding in a nice quiet area (no many footpath users) and not riding like a ratbag, there is still a risk.

Why not get a push bike? or a scooter without a motor?
