As reported by news.com.au, it looks like the console was not a limited-run item after all. Here's a quote from the article below (italics mine)

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima recently apologised to fans for frustrating supply shortages, before making a welcomed announcement.

“We apologise to our consumers and retail partners for the inconvenience caused by product shortages,” he told BGR. (bgr.com)

“Some parts require time to procure, but we are working to increase production.

    Nintendo have supply shortages for every single thing they make so the apology is kinda dumb.
