      Hunter connection is good.
Other similar destinations are under Townhall Woolworths, you need to look to find it.
Below street level in China Town, I think it is called Dixon something, and Food World at ground level in Dixon St.
My absolute fave at the moment is Pork Roll $4.95 in George st west of Goulborn.
The $4.95 bahn mi are good, but try the bbq pork bahn mi, or roast pork with crackling banh mi for $6.96. It is a blessing. And they are doing bahn mi op la (fried egg) after I nagged them for it, possibly the best hang over food south of Saigon.

Seriously, you will come back to find this comment to up vote it.
In the neighbourhood is Mamak, which is the most western friendly Malay food I know, in that they will both temper the chilli to suit my aussie parents who think pepper is hot, but are also a western style sit down cafe so it isn't hold-it-in-your-hand street food. They make really good mee goreng and roti.

        • The roti Cani is to die for. At mamak. Other places are too thick.

Where's the pork roll place? i'm thinking of the tiny place next to the hair salon?

        • That is it. About 3 doors west of the Baptist Church.

        • @mskeggs: but how early do they close?

      • townhall woolies has less choices and dollar more expensive than hunter.

        • But is it open later? Hunter is closed before 7

I think it is called Dixon Street Food Court (very simple name).

      • I haven't covered much of Sydney (yet). But the food court on top of Market City seems like good value to me.

3 choice with rice or noodles will set you back $8.X0

Did you know in Cabramatta and Canley Vale, there are $3 pork roll!!

      • +2

$2.80 in Bankstown Old Town Centre.

      • add train ticket to cabra, and you better off buy in the city if you live in the city and hungry for lunch

    • cheapest in Australia ? Possibly, just like the quality of the food there..

    • Worked above this place for 10 years. Best char kway teow in Sydney and $8.50 for a huge serve. That place added a few kgs to me !!!

      • what's the restaurant actually called?

        • No idea, it's the place next to the city kebab. Ask for the Number 19. It rocks !

  • There's a few places around the city that mark-down sushi rolls - $5 for 3 rolls in the afternoon/early evening.

David Jones food hall also marks down some food in the evening.

Coles worth chicken, 2 prepacked salads and some bread rolls. 4 meals sorted under $15.

  • Wait until food courts are near closing time, and the stalls with bain maries of hot food need to pack up and sell fast at special cheeeeap prices. Think 2 containers for $10, or less the closer it is to closing time.

    Otherwise… Domino's :P

  • A Tiger pie from Harry's … Pie, mash, peas & gravy. Good value for the $

  • I have never found Chinese take away for less than $5 cheapest was something like $8 or $6.50 special fried rice.

My local pork roll is a rip.. $5.50 .

    Local chips is $3.50

    Kebab is $8.50

Doesn't help that this place is kind of a tourist trap in the blue mountains so yeah :(

I miss inner west and city deals but a return train ride is like 6 bucks minimum so that kills any deals unless I want to wait or add 2 hours train ride plus fare

    • Blackheath Cake Shop does awesome fresh cream apple turnovers for about $2.
Schwartz cakes in Wenty does great pies, but not very cheap. Worth it though.
The Yellow Deli in Ktown is run by a cult, but that equals low wages and their prices are good for a sit down cafe.
Poulets Chicken does a huge bag of chips for about $10, and the Corner Roast large chips is about $5.
Lawson Cake Shop is quite cheap, they do a nice apricot tea cake for $5 and the pies are reasonable.

But agreed, the tourist prices limit the chances to find much cheap.

      • $10 for chips? Do these come with a hand job? I can get two pizzas for that price or a kebab haha lol

Btw where is the corner roast? And can you recommend a good laksa or satay chicken place? (Looking for the authentic fried with lots of sauce one not just pure straight up peanut butter, bonus points for rice noodle)

Btw what's good in the cult deli? Burger? Chips? Sandwiches?

        • The $10 chips is one of the bags that chickens come in, filled up. Plenty for the 6 people in our family.
The corner roast is across the road from Dan Murphy's.
The Unique Patisserie in Katoomba street makes authentic Penang (nonya) style malay food. A Malaysian friend raves about it, though I thought it was only 'ok'.
There is a reason when we go out to celebrate a birthday or something we will usually head down the hill for Asian food.
The Station Bar pizzas are ok, but again, not cheap.

        • @mskeggs: any star bucks or Gloria jeans in the area

I need a good donut or milkshake fix

        • @AlienC:
No Starbucks or Gloria Jeans, but you are in luck because overpriced hipster cafes is what the mountains is full of.
Up Beat (Katoomba St) or Big Beat (old town centre arcade) make good coffee, fresh juice and vegetarian food.
Savoy (Katoomba St) is a bit more traditional cafe light meals
Yellow Deli I mentioned already, but a really unique place.

In Leura, I like Leura Garage, the Lily Pad and Bakery on Wentworth (try their raisin toast, its very good).
Wenty has a couple of cafes in town, but the Conservation Hut down near the falls is worth a visit.
Lawson has a newish cafe behind the shops called Cortado that is cool.
I'm not really a cafe lurker, but you could easily go to a different one each weekend for a year.

EDIT: unfortunately, I have no idea if they do fancy milkshakes, I rarely order them. The only donuts I know for sure are at Katoomba Donut King, but they are the same as everywhere else.

        • @mskeggs: where is this katoomba donut king?

        • @AlienC:
Next to Coles. (expensive) take away sushi there too.

  • Dixon House.
