Advise - Fuel Options and What I Should Use Ethanol 105 (E85) Holden Commodore VE Series 2

Ok, I have a question regarding fuel use, as I am getting different stories from different Places

I have a VE-S2 Commodore

My car is designed to take any of the following fuels (Price Per Litre):
Ethanol 105 E85 (139.9)
Ethanol 94 E10 (138.3)
ULP 91 (140.3)
ULP 95 (153.8)
ULP 98 (158.8)
ULP 100 (Price not listed fuel watch)

I am wondering if Ethanol 105 is worth it. Does anyone have experience?

My aim is to get my running costs as cheap as possible as I am now driving 1,500km a week. Another importance to me is reduce dependance on Arab Oil (Why I made sure my next choice had E85). I have noticed NSW doesn't have subsidies on E85, hence I ask is it worth it.

Cheers Kindly

    • It's interest how they say a 33% difference between ULP and E85, Yet other resources from the USA government have tested around 6% difference. I am more inclined to believe the 33% figure, not only based on finding another thread, but also the fact Caltex have stopped selling it. It seems to point that fuel ecom is really shot with our E85 designed cars.

I drive a VF SS Wagon.

I tried E85 once, and it drank the fuel so quick it made my head spin. I'm talking less than 300 kms from a tank.

Went back to Caltex 98, which I can get easily 450 kms.

The extra fuel usage ended up costing more.

    • Oh shit. Thats a huge difference. Do you ever use ULP91? Any idea what your difference would be between that and 98 in range?

How you drive is more important than what fuel you use. Accelerate slowly, maintain constant speed ie cruise control and avoid heavy braking at stopping points.

    • Cheers haha. Already drive pretty well. It's more trying to figure out if I can balance, My moral stance, costs, enviromental impact and do my part in reducing oil dependance.

  • Get the 7/11 app and lock in fuel price, you can reserch fuel price on the https://www.fuelcheck.nsw.gov.au/app site
I drive around for work and lock in a price for my wife I often save her $10-15 dollars a tank just by researching the cheap days, we always use 98 as you get a lot more mileage and is better for your engine.
We Normally pay $1.20-1.30 for 98

    • we always use 98 as you get a lot more mileage and is better for your engine.

Unless your car requires minimum RON 98 why do you say it's better for your car?

  • I once read a article in RACV stating that E10 is the best vale for money in price vs mileage.

Again if you want a V8 why bother about fuel economy?… if you need fuel economy there are heaps of cars out there with would give double the mileage!

    • Cheers for the RACV advise. I'm going to read into it. I have a VE-S2 (Series 2) Commodore. Its the V6 3.0ltr.
I find that it uses about the same amount of fuel as my old i30 (4 cyl 2.0) as I do alot of high speed and the i30 revs high.

Wouldn't a car with LPG been a better choice?

That narrows his choice down to a Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore (Dedicated gas, 6 cylinder).

Gas conversions no longer has rebates attached to them, so over $4500 for a gas conversion will take a while to recoup.

Edit: Actually a gas conversion could be worth it. The OP plans on driving ALOT of kilometres. (70,000km a year?)

They could pay it off in 12 months or so

That is why I'm would have thought they may have considered those two.

get my running costs as cheap as possible
        driving 1,500km a week

And if avoiding Arab oil, is really important, LPG was the way to go.

      • Cheers, I may look into that. Might look at conversion costs vs running. I would have brought Dedicated gas but it would have set me back an extra $8k at purchase as I got my car cheap thru my mates dealer network

    • I brought 2nd hand thru my mates dealer network. They didnt have LPG models and I was looking at $8k extra if I brought the same car private
