What Do You Use to Make Your House Smell Nice? Candles vs Reed Diffuser vs Mist Diffuser?

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to see if anyone had any tips to share on a cost efficient way to make your house smell nice? I'm not trying to mask bad smells, I just want the house to smell good.

I previously used Scented Space reed diffusers which I used to get from Myer because they were very subtle and the oil lasted quite a long time, but recently they've changed their packaging and their prices have gone up 50%! Also, I'm trying to be a bit more environmentally friendly and am thinking of finding ones that offer refills instead of having to buy a new reed diffuser each time. I've also tried Dusk reed diffusers although I find the smells can be quite strong, I prefer something that is subtle and lingers.

I'm considering a mist diffuser, does anyone have any advice on this? Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Commercial air fresheners are too expensive IMO. For true Ozbargainer spirit, try using your own using herbs and spices and fruits like citrus. Things like:

    Orange
    Lemon
    Cinnamon
    Cloves
    Vanilla extract
    Peppermint
    coconut extract
    almond extract
    basil
    tea leaves (e.g earl grey)

You can boil all that crap in a saucepan or stick it into one of those tea light thingies to evaporate it slowly. Or turn it into a room spray. Or make your own diffuse refills.

      all that crap

      lol

I was at a friend's house the other day and she had a bunch of dried home-grown lavender tied up and hanging on the wall of the bathroom. Smelled so goooood. Subtle, soothing, and natural.

    • Thanks I'm going to google some DIY stuff

  • The dusk ones are ok.. if it's too strong just try one reed only.

We also have one of the auto spray units, I don't like them as the scent is too strong. And the longest setting is like every 15 minutes. I would rather it spray every hour or two but that's not an option, it's like 15 min, 8, 5, 3.

Best I think is a bunch of real flowers.

    • I get really bad hayfever so flowers are no go haha.
Actually I might try using less reeds, so the smell is not so strong and hopefully that makes it last longer too.
      Thanks

      • Certain flowers make me have a hayfever problem, the spray is the same, to strong for me and makes me sneeze (I would also rather not have something spraying every 15 minutes into the air I breathe.

        • I don't like those automatic spray things either… most things in a can smells a bit too chemically.

I find no smell nice. A radical position I know but there you have it.

    • Freshly cut grass?

    • Totally agree a clean house that has not been smoked in or had any type of fragrance added for me.I feel that most people use scents in their homes do so to hide the stale scents that they have used before that have embedded in their furnishings.

I have a perfume made up of the scents of 13 different women, all captivating beauties in their own distinct way, that I capture and distill into a single, perfect smell, which I then diffuse throughout the whole house.

It smells good, has the benefit of turning people into willing slaves, but it is rather difficult to obtain so I don't recommend it.

Do you have a very large freezer?

    • Oh. Is this the legendary salted milk and coins trick?

  • obtain one of those essential oil burners that has a tea light under it.

    vanilla essence works well.

    • Yep I do the same with lavender oil when smoke from our neighbours gets in. Works a treat, still haven't finished my first bottle of oil.

My Mrs runs around with a glen20 can every time I fart… I don't know if it helps or make things worse…
I like the smell of my house to be personal…smell of me, my dogs, it tells me am home. :) However, waking up to freshly ground coffee beans is pretty darn good. I have my coffee machine on a timer and it kicks off it's cycle and everything is ready by 6 am for a refreshing start to another mundane day.

    • I love the smell of fresh coffee, sometimes I squeeze the packet and some of the coffee bean smell comes through the one way airlock !!
Unfortunately my partner hates coffee so I doubt he'd appreciate a house that smells like coffee haha

  • Instead of devices like candles or diffusers, I prefer naturally occurring fragrances like coffee or bacon in my house. Mmm, bacon.

    • Hi Homer..

  • surprised no one has mentioned this.. open windows or doors and let the air flow through.

  • just bake bread
