Aren't flick knives illegal to import?

    • This is a folding knife. Legal.

    • Legislation deems these as perfectly legal flippers.

    • Regulations changed in 2015. As long as theyre not spring assisted they're ok to import.

  • Ooh, so manly but how do you carry it everyday in the nanny state?

Aha, I see- no sooner asked than answered:

This is the type of knife that you want either in your toolbox, for camping, for hunting or for fishing. Not sure why you would think it's for anything illegal.

You are taking a risk buying a perfectly legal folding knife from overseas because customs are just as likely to seize it.

      • +2

because customs are just as likely to seize it.

Do you have any proof of this happening recently? I've bought a few from the U.S. over the last 18 months without issue

        • I know from my own huge sample size of two- one delivered ok- one got a letter from customs saying come and give yourself a huge migraine trying to prove this knife is kosher- it was extemely kosher but it wasn't worth the grief.

        • +3

Australian Customs regulations have had a significant change with respect to the importation of knives into Australia (from Dec 2015), to the benefit of knife collectors.
Unless it is automatic or assisted opening, you should no longer have a problem getting knives in.

        • @mfxr:

This was 2014 I think. May try again with a cheapy.

        • @shaybisc:

No issue now, your original statement is incorrect.

What was the knife customs sent the letter for?

        • @shaybisc:
What state are you in? Only had one bladed product confiscated when in Queensland and to be honest they were in their rights to do so. Haven't had anything stopped yet since moving to NSW.

        • @OzBragain:

It was an Enlan. Similar to this. Might be this one.

        • I had one seized and a nasty note from customs about 12-18 months ago, it was a folding knife. (NSW)

        • @mfxr:

Awesome news, mine (cheaper folding) would have been confiscated back then. I never bothered since that incident with the nasty letter from customs (a folding knife FFS).

I wanted to get a Spyderco rescue knife, I kayak and am a wilderness rescue volunteer but thought I am not paying $100's and having them take it off me.

        • @shaybisc:

The Enlan you linked to is a flipper which would not have been permitted prior to Dec 2015.

Just because it's a folding knife doesn't make it legal here. Not related to your case but prior to the new regulations, Customs had a test where they would shake a folding knife with the blade closed, if the blade moved they would confiscate the knife.

I wanted to get a Spyderco rescue knife, I kayak and am a wilderness rescue volunteer but thought I am not paying $100's and having them take it off me.

mfxr has provided an easy to read link here of the current regulations. There's no problem importing a Spyderco rescue knife. If you're really that paranoid, buy from a local seller instead of p!ssing and moaning.

EDIT: More info (from the above link) on the test Customs previously used

The flick test was quick test a customs officer would carry out to determine if a knife was unable to be imported. The officer would hold the knife, and use gravity, inertia or centrifugal force to try to open the knife with one hand.

If the knife opened with this test, it was deemed unable to be imported without the correct permit.

As one can imagine, the ambiguity of this test made it difficult to know whether or not a knife would be able to be imported.

        • the centrifugal force test would open a "butterfly knife" …..
I have had some syderco folding knives (police model and the rescue model) brought in without problems, they can be opened with one hand, but not as quickly as a butterfly knife.

        • @garage sale:

Butterfly knives have been listed as a prohibited weapon for some time now. Not sure what your comparison shows.

        • @OzBragain:

          Thanks for the info.

I had a feeling I owned a CRKT. Checked in my knife bag. Yes I do. This mighty beast.

Similar, the link provided is the SKU: K451XXP model (2.03").

This one is the K456XXP model (2.84").

Price difference of $5 bucks really, shipping direct from here vs overseas

Ah. Longer blade. Thanks. $55.59 for that size on ebay without any discount. May wait for the next 10% or 20% off ebay coupon and get from there.

I watched the video on the link. I've been looking for a knife for church for ages!

    • To kill the sinners who dont confess? O.o

  • Hi Rep, so is this an assisted opener?

    • if you click the link you can see the knife has a knob on the opposite side so you effectively PUSH the blade open

personally I dont see the point in spending $50 on this when there's heaps for less than half that that work just fine

      • That's why I asked, just want to check if it has a spring to 'assist'

  • +1

Doesn't suit me. It's a "gentleman knife for a real man".

Also, I believe in Queensland the, ahem, "assisted opening" would be called a "flick" knife.
