        got Negged for this?

        Why does it matter?

        • If you get a neg for nothing, aren't you kind of curious and want to know why? Maybe it's just a human thing…

        • @sagitox: See if I get negged for the above comment, I will know why…

    • see you there :)

      • I'll be wearing a carnation

Got my mum free tickets to the session in Tas on Wed this week and she said it was good… not sure if I trust her judgement or not but free is free :)

    • +1

Yes it was really good. It's been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars

  • Took forever to register and missed out. Only wanted one ticket to vic session…any day :(

  • +4

Saw this on Wed nite (thanks showfilmfirst). Very enjoyable.

    • +1 on that; really good show.

  • ACT and SA are also sold out.

My email didn't have the code either :/

    • My email had a click here type link thing to get the tickets. Did yours?

There was also an option to print your tickets on the website.

      • Yeah - it might have been because I wanted ACT tickets and they had gone already.

  • So… why are they giving so many tickets away? This is like the 4th time I've seen similar deals here. Are people just not buying tickets?

I've seen the trailer. I'd pay to go watch this… it's just that I don't have the time.

    • +5

It's not released until the 16th February. I think they want to build word of mouth? Anyway, I saw a free session earlier this week and I'd recommend it - great story and good acting. It goes for just over 2 hours but was very engaging throughout.

      • Ah. Didn't realise it wasn't released yet. Makes you wonder though. Is giving away tickets more effective/cheaper than buying ad space and TV time?

I'm going to watch it, based purely on the trailers on YouTube.

        • +1

Social media buzz is better than advertising nowdays.

        • -1

@try2bhelpful: You appear to be under the impression that social media content is not advertising.

        • @Diji1: Ahh, but it depends on what is being advertised. In social media it is usually the person posting.

  • QLD Robina gone now

  • +2

Saw it at Mt Gravatt on Monday … great movie !

    • +1

Agreed - I really enjoyed it!

  • Global-warming related movie?

    • No, 3 female African American scientists at NASA in the 40s onward :)

  • +1

    Side note: What's Theatre Adelaide?

  • Why can't it be Transformers type stuff.

    • +5

Because it's based on a true story… and sorry to break it to you, kid… but Transformers are not real.

      • -2

So only true stories are allowed to be screened free? Seems like I hit a nerve there wondering why action movies aren't given free screenings. What's you problem, enjoy the free true story.

        • Sorry. I didn't understand the question. I thought you were asking about the movie itself… like why can't there be Transformers in this movie. So I said it was based on a true story, etc.

There are plenty of positive reviews. Check them out if you're undecided,
    http://m.imdb.com/title/tt4846340/reviews?ref_=m_tt_urv#show…

Supposedly excellent acting, but, many factual errors and plenty of artistic license. Most reviewers said these issues didn't spoil the movie too much.

Ticket sales outside of US have been poor (2.5mil). I'm not too surprised given the topic (eg. The Dish wasn't a huge hit worldwide and the topics appear to be similar).

I really enjoyed The Man Who Knew Infinity (another under performing movie, about an Indian Mathematician who was ahead of his time). This movie may have similar "feel good" vibe. I found the behaviour of the characters very believable in The Man Who Knew Infinity, which really made the story superb.

    • many factual errors and plenty of artistic license.

Right, that'd be the part where 3 women were amongst hundreds of people all doing the same job who weren't black but, taking great artistic license, the films authors decided to portray it as if the space program would not have happened without these three women.

      • +2

What makes it remarkable is that the 'hundreds of people all doing the same job' were overwhelmingly men and white, and these women succeeded and pioneered in an era where segregation, sexism and racism were still the norm. These women were the first in their field to reach the positions they did in NASA, and believe it or not, some of their calculations actually were critical to the success of NASA's missions. But don't let your preconceived notions get in the way.

      • +2

Watching the show, you definitely don't get the feeling that the women made the entire space program happen, but more that they did contribute as well. Were their actual accomplishments overplayed for artistic license? As much as Megan Fox's ass was overplayed in the Transformers movies for artistic license, I'd say.

I actually thought the movie had a strong message about overcoming racism by working smartly within the system than fighting violently against it.

    • +1

You're wrong about the US ticket sales - it topped the box office in the US for two weeks, even beating the new Star Wars. It's made over $100 million in the US alone.

  • -3

    Boring Oscar-bait movie.

    • +3

Have you actually seen it, or are you just being boorish?

      • "Have you actually seen it"

Its been available online since about 13th January. Heaps of people have seen it.
I haven't bothered but my Missus liked it a lot.

        • It was a really good movie, even if you aren't into "chick" stuff there is a reasonable amount of geek and seeing that even NASA was segregated was an eye opener.

  • Some more tickets are available!!! I managed to get one in Vic!!! Yay!!!! So happy!!!

  • +1

    Good movie!

  • +1

Awesome film, filmed by an Australian btw.

  • Looks like only Townsville is left now.

  • Excellent movie and I definitely recommend others to watch this.

It was very engaging, funny and uplifting movie to watch. I also liked how they showed the real people the actresses were portraying at the end and what they had achieved.

I thought that some of the more subtle ways of how they dealt with racism was good. Like how [DE-IDENTIFYING TO REDUCE SPOILERS] an antagonist the ladies met at the start of the film overcame their personal form of racism as the girls work on helping America beat the 'commies' to space overrode it.

FYI, this is not a super serious thinking persons type movie but it does make you consider how lucky we are compared to those days and shows how much further we still have to go.

I also liked that the lead female Taraji P. Henson was Lt Carter from Person of Interest which was one of my favourite shows (and no, I am not a big fan of Empire).
