OZBARGAIN

Hi OzBargainers,

About

Been a member on OzBargain for many years now. The community has helped me greatly with my purchases and the forums have also been a great resource.

I've recently taken the plunge and left my day job to focus more on growing my business. When I was getting married I struggled to find affordable and high quality jewellery for my wedding which is when I had the idea to start Bella Krystal - a boutique online retailer specialising in bridal & event jewellery and accessories.

The Bargain

I'm not sure if many of you will be interested in this but I just wanted to try and provide a great deal for the OzBargain community. I will be running a 40% off all items sale for all OzBargain members. Please use the coupon code OZBARGAIN on checkout (expires 08/02/2017).

All orders also come with free Australian shipping.

Is This Really a Bargain?

Yes - this is the cheapest we've ever sold our items.

While I'm sure it's possible to find cheaper low quality versions of some of our items, we have a lot of unique designs that you'd have a very hard time finding anywhere else.

  • Your post is well written.

However, your domain was only created in November so it should be the cheapest ever.

Can you please point to contact info on your site (e.g. physical address or even a telephone number?)

      Hi smashed,

Good detective work, we only moved to the .com domain in November. Prior to this we used a .com.au domain (registered in 2011 when the business first started).

We do not currently have a showroom and sell our products only online. You can contact us via the contact form on the website or email [email protected].

      • Thanks

Genuine question. Do you think it would be reassuring for your customers if your site had a physical address or telephone number?

Personally I wouldn't buy an item from a seller who I can only contact via the webform as they are prone to ignoring you when there is an issue (not implying that you would do this).

        • Hi smashed,

Thank you for your feedback, you raise a fair point and we will definitely look into including a telephone number on the site but have no plans at the moment to include a physical address.

Personally when shopping online I find PayPal as a payment option more reassuring than a phone number given how good their buyer protection is.

P.S. updated section 10 as per your other comment.

This item has an exact image match in this Amazon listing The listing also states: "EVER FAITH is a US registered trademark and Ever Faith Jewelry(former name: Kiss Bling) is its only owner. We will pursue legal action against trademark infringement in case of UNAUTHORIZED sale or resale." If you don't have permission to resell that item, I suggest requesting such or taking it down.

Then there's this vs this, this vs this and this vs this, the last of which may be an issue as it seems to via the original brand and carries its name wherever the item appears on the web.

What I'm trying to say is that I don't think the OzBargain community is your target market.

Beyond the product images, I imagine you don't have a license to use the image you used on your Facebook page from December. It was taken by a photographer called Carlyle Routh in 2013, for a Canadian magazine called weddingbells; the full set from the shoot is in this post. There are a lot of images like this on your Facebook page and considering it's commercial use, it could get you in a lot of trouble. The best case scenario is a cease and desist with an invoice for use (which can be huge), but some more prominent creators with a legal team will go straight for a lawsuit. I can see the banner images you use are from a magazine spread featuring your products - which is a bit of a grey area if the magazine doesn't know - I imagine they do, but it'd be a good idea to have it in writing either way.

With the relaunch, I suggest you look into image licensing, such as Public Domain, Creative Commons Attribution licenses and just generally what you can and cannot use (especially for commercial use), including typefaces/fonts. I understand that it can seem complicated, but there are lots of sites like Unsplash, Pixabay, Pexels, Stock Up and Gratisography that offer all their images under a public domain license (which means you can use it for commercial use without attribution.) Font Squirrel is the same kind of thing but for typefaces. If you still find it a bit mind boggling, I suggest consulting a graphic designer.

Best of luck with the business.

    • Did you reverse image search @atasnatas?

Practically a 1000% markup on the prices at another reseller.

      Definitely an ozbargain :)

      • Yeah, reverse image searching. The photography struck me as inconsistent and the FAQ states the images are not digitally altered - yet there are sharp reflections and perfect drop shadows on 100% white backgrounds. I figured something was up.

I've just noticed the New Arrivals image is from MEG Jewelry and the Lookbook image is all over DHgate, then in the preview image here it shows the photo by Carlyle Routh being used in the subscription pop up. So it goes beyond social media, into the site's code.

It's weird because the major typefaces are from Google Fonts, with 'free alternative to [famous, super expensive typeface]' classics like Montserrat, Roboto and Open Sans. The icons are technically text, which is something web devs do quite a bit to avoid dealing with SVGs or rasters - using Font Awesome, a very popular way of doing so. The site has custom jQuery plug-ins, seems to be built to be responsive (ie, work on various screen sizes) and text such as the Privacy Policy are verbatim from GitHub. I'm no programmer, but it's obvious to me that one was involved. The site was built by someone who knew what they were doing. It's a shame they didn't catch the licensing issues when they were handed the images; being directly on an eCommerce site upgrades them to ticking time bomb status.
